An absolutely incredible midwife. Sophia's enthusiasm and love for pregnancy, birth, and postpartum is immeasurable. This was our first baby and we were planning for a homebirth. We emailed ahead of time to nail down a plan for how the day would go, Sophia always made me feel like my ideas were valid and that we'd figure out a way to excite them day of. Come photo day, Sophia showed up early, was clean and professional, started executing some of our previously discussed ideas that didn't involve human faces while I rounded up my crazy crew for our first pose. We are a puertorrican family that relocated here after loosing Everything in a hurricane 3 years ago. When I knew I was pregnant, I immediately started looking for POC, Spanish speaking midwifes, to find out that there aren't in Sonoma and Marin county. We met Sophia and her post-partum offering made sense since we don't have relatives here to support us with our new kid. We contracted her in February. In March, after telling my job that I was pregnant, they asked for my resignation. Is a legal practice and very common in California called non re-election. As the sole provider for my soon to be family of 5, receiving those news were heartbreaking, as I knew I would lost my maternity rights, it would be really difficult finding a job while pregnant, and I would be starting a new job 8 months pregnant. I applied for several positions around the area, and when being interviewed in person, I was rejected. I did received offers form closer towns, but the pay cut was 30k a month, leaving us with no budget to eat. And yes, my husband could find a job, to pay childcare, which doesn't make any sense. I accepted a job offer in Santa Clara and with a lot of sadness, we are moving once again, leaving our friends, our community and our reality once again abruptly. What roles does Sophia plays? She knew everything that was going on and the emotional struggles that we were going thru, as my midwife, because is something that directly affects my pregnancy. I can see her business/contractual point of view. Her contract states that she will only refund 1k out of the 4K that I paid. I've only seen her 4 times. After telling her that We might move (I'm still in Sonoma county because we can't find a house down there), she stated that she won't travel that far An recommended virtual prenatal visits and trying to find a midwife closer to me as a back up. I said yes to the midwife part but held back on prenatal visits, as I won't risk my health nor my baby's health, also, I would still have to pay for the full service that the contract specified without receiving it. As I mentioned, after she offered this, she retracted herself saying that I created a post in a group, which I didn't and I didn't found out about this post until she wrote a letter of release of care saying that I followed her advise and reach out to the community and started a fundraiser. Again, I was blocked from this post, I never wrote anything and the twisted that information to release me from her care keeping 3k for 4 visits. This is unreasonable and she has responded with blatant cruelty and inhumane responses. In all her letters, she is lying and twisting what happened. Stating that she helped me to look for a job and counseled me, when that's not true. Her contract doesn't specify restrictions on where she can travel/don't travel. It's a poorly written contract that lacks pertinent information which leaves it open for interpretation. She is not patient centered and has acted greedy and selfish, without showing compassion for the tough situation and collaborating to the fact that POC have so much difficulty accessing home-birth. I've been more than open to negotiate with her, as she has said that she didn't had the money, but then prefers to pay a lawyer Rather than come to terms and speak to me. I'm not expecting a full refund, just what I think is fair ($2500). I'm more that happy to share conversations and letters between us and I appreciate you reading such a long post. Update after Sophia responded: Sophia in fact did offered resolutions, and after a friend posted in Facebook without the knowledge or consent from the patient doing a fundraiser, Sophia sent a letter releasing from her care stating that they patient made this post. If you need the evidence I will gladly share it. Also, and this is most important, I was under Sophias care and I complained about a symptom for the time being her patient and she downplayed it. I needed up in the hospital and found out that I have a chronic condition that is I had found out earlier, I would've been able to control at an earlier stage and me and my baby wouldn't be affected by it. She was negligent and is still downplaying the situation. read more

We recently hired Sophia for a family photo shoot and were beyond thrilled! She provided many date and location options as well as a helpful tip guide for day of. There were 5 of us (so it wasnt too easy to get everyone coordinated, we're also not the most photogenic bunch) but she made everything so simple and incredibly FUN! When my husband and I moved to Sonoma County in early 2019 we barely knew anyone, and all our family was a long drive away in Southern Oregon. Within two months we learned we were expecting our first child, and while we were excited, we had no idea what we were doing. I had established care with a local OBGYN, but quickly felt uneasy under their care. Our visits were incredibly brief, and it wasn't even guaranteed they would be at my delivery. I knew I needed someone else, so I began researching local doulas and birth centers. After interviewing with a few doulas and touring both available birth centers, I finally found Sophia through the Doula Care Collective. Me, my husband, and our fur baby Luna instantly felt at easy with her and knew she was who we needed to join us on our journey to parenthood. I had a lot of conflicting feelings about where I wanted to give birth, and Sophia presented every option to me without attempting to sway me one way or the other. It was Sophia's confidence in me and positive spirit that built the strength I needed to decide on a home birth. I knew I could easily transfer to a local hospital just 5 minutes from my home should we need additional care, and that Sophia could guide me through any outcome. It turned out that after over 24 hours of laboring at home I needed to transfer to the hospital and eventually have a c-section. This was due to a variety of reasons and would have been immensely challenging for me if it hadn't been for Sophia. She was by my side every moment, and helped me navigate all my options while making sure to step in and ask the questions of the hospital staff that she knew I would want answered. During my c-section, Sophia was there to comfort me, take my mind off things, listen to my needs and feelings, and advocate for me while I could barely move or speak. Sophia supported me with doula services for the hospital birth of my second son in 2018. When I became pregnant for the 3rd time in 2021 I knew that I wanted to work with Sophia again but this time I decided to hire her for midwife services and to support my planned homebirth. Sophia started doing home visits for check ups when I was about 4months pregnant. The calm home visits were such a nice change from the rushed hospital check ups I had with my previous two pregnancies. She was always able to answer any questions we had and send information for us to learn from. My concerns were always addressed with consideration, thoughtfulness and a wealth of experience. With Sophia's support and guidance I felt myself doing work for the inner growth and strength that I needed in order to prepare for my homebirth. She was always available and promptly answered any questions that came up. When my labor started I felt extremely calm, capable and supported with her calm and grounded presence. Delivering in the tub with warm water unassisted but with Sophia and my husband's support and encouragement is one of my favorite experiences of my life. The entire birth experience was calm and peaceful. I never felt rushed or pushed to do anything I was not ready for or comfortable doing. Being tucked into bed when I was ready to leave the tub was so comforting and being able to have my older son participate in the cord burning, weighing and measuring is a memory that my family will treasure forever. When I was pregnant with my eldest (5.5 years ago) I was researching my labor and delivery options in our area. My cousin referred me to Sophia for doula care. After meeting with her I decided her calm, positive energy was something I needed for my labor experience and hired her as my doula and birth photographer. Sophia was not yet a midwife but was assisting the attending midwife throughout my entire labor and hospital transfer for C-section (51 hours total!) She helped me make informed decisions regarding my care and was supportive and patient throughout the entire process. My birth experience was not what I was expecting but Sophia made the transition (and disappointment of needing a C-section) easier as she explained and helped me come to terms with all the options and risks involved. She captured every moment, the Ups, the downs, the grief, the excitement, the pain and strength... She managed to support me and get a visual record of the experience and help me feel comfortable and empowered throughout the entire labor. I fell in love with the person she was and recommended her to every pregnant friend I had. She truly MADE my experience one I could accept and find beauty in when I am almost certain I'd still be resentful for today had she not been there to help me navigate the complex medical decisions they throw at you before a csection and you're already out of your mind because you're in labor for the first time. After my son was born we remained friends. She answered all my questions and referred me to more information when my questions were out of her scope of expertise. Fast forward to when she was going through school to obtain her midwifery license, she hired me on as a nanny to her to young kiddos and I grew to know her family as well as she knew me and mine. I witnessed again how patient and understanding she is. How loving and kind she is. How those qualities reflect in her children and significant other. The passion she has for life, love and all things BABY are engrained deep into their everyday lives. When I found out I was pregnant with my second child I knew instantly I wanted her there! I opted for a VBAC with home birth midwives local to my area. I was out of Sophia's usual midwife servicing area but she agreed to be my birth photographer again. Throughout my pregnancy she answered all my questions and gave me a plethora of information regarding my concerns about baby position and delivery, about natural induction, medicines, laboring techniques, etc. She talked with me about PTSD from my first labor and how every baby and delivery is different. She came to our baby shower with her two kiddos and celebrated our baby with us. I went into labor at 41 weeks 4 days in the middle of the night. I called Sophia around 2am and she rushed to us from over an hour away! I knew I had midwives there but knowing she was also a midwife I felt a surge of confidence that THIS time I could really do it! I WAS going to have my vbac experience and she was going to be there to capture every moment of it! The room was dark, almost too dark to get a good picture but she did it! She got everything on film and edited each picture to perfection, showing every raw, intimate, and loving moment my husband, son and I shared whilst bringing our baby girl into this world. Sophia is by FAR the most supportive, knowledgeable, patient and understanding birth coach, friend, photographer and midwife I know! Her dedication to her work, and close bond she develops with her clients is incomparable to anyone else. She is the best of friends to have and definitely a must in my book when it comes to pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care. I can't recommend her enough, nor will any review I write ever give justice to the service she provides to her clients. Sophia is part of my family now and I couldn't be more satisfied in both of my experiences with her attending my children's births.
