I really loved and enjoyed my beginner class here. The beginner class is high in demand so you have to register a couple of months in advance. The class is 4 weeks long for 2 hours each. We LOVE this place. My daughter started with the Sunday classes as a complete beginner at age 7, did two weeks of the summer camp, and she had her 8th birthday party here. Shannon and her staff are amazing. Every time I've been in the shop, it's full of kids of all ages and skill levels, relaxed, happy, and working hard. The staff give the kids a remarkable degree of autonomy while providing just enough guidance and supervision to keep fingers and machines safe and ensure real skill building and engagement. At my daughter's birthday party, she and eight of her friends (complete novices ages 6-9) made their own stuffies from scratch, each at their own machines, working at their own paces. They worked hard, had a blast, and were very proud of themselves. Very different from a friend's party at another sewing place where kids took turns at machines operated by adults, who sometimes let the kids keep their hands on the fabric while the adult sewed. I'm in love with Soul Collections. I've been thinking about learning how to see again for months now. I stumbled across this local gem on Groupon and purchased a voucher for beginner's classes to get my feet wet again. I called the business to inquire about the class schedule and spoke with Shannon who is the owner of this lovely place. She told me that she likes to start all classes in the beginning of the month, that way everyone enrolled is on the same page which is cool with me. Shannon is very friendly and very passionate about sewing. At the first class, she gave us a little history about how the business got started. Prior to opening the storefront business, she taught classes in the comfort of her apartment. She wanted to provide an outlet for several teens who were hanging out on the street as she was going to her job. It worked for a bit but it didn't last long. Shannon then decided to open her business in the location where she is now to provide affordable lessons to those who wanted to learn about sewing. She offers several classes during the week and on the weekends. There is beginner's sewing, intermediate sewing, pattern making, draping, leggings, children's sewing class and several others. I really enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be back to take more lessons. There are also added perks if you check in on Yelp, there is a discount off of a beginner's class, there is also an $140 voucher that you can purchase for use towards classes valued at only $125 and there is also a 5% discount off any class. took the beginner's sewing class at this Sewing Lounge for the month of July. I was INCREDIBLY disappointed after spending $120 and basically left with only the knowledge of how to thread a sewing machine. There was no type of organization or any lessons planned out over the four week course. When I initially bought the Sewing Course, I received confirmation of my purchase almost a week after purchase asking which day I would like to sign up for. Once I replied with the desired day, no response was made for almost a week. I called, no reply. Forwarded the email again, no reply. When I finally texted the number, the instructor was very cold, rude and told me that her hands were busy and she would respond when she is not teaching. From the first day of classes, I could tell that it was a waste of money. Our instructor was taking care her very fussy two year old while trying to instruct us on how to use a sewing machine. I thought this was maybe just for the first class but I only ended up going to three out of the four classes (realized I was wasting my time) and the 2 year old was there for each session I attended. I understand having a new toddler but it is important to notify the students that nursing will be taking place during the time they paid for. During the second week, the child was crying while we were sewing and at moments the instructor, his mother, told us to "ignore him". Overall, she was very melancholy and didn't show any signs of joy or gratitude which is important when teaching a large group about an important domain of FASHION. Again, there was no structure to these two hour meet up sessions. The first session the 12-13 students were to crowd around one machine, barely able to see the steps of what to do AND some machines were different then the one she was teaching on. Altogether, making it hard to see what was going on and hard to remember the steps for the following classes. The names and parts of the sewing machine were identified but glossed over so quickly during teaching that by the second meet-up, I could not remember the steps or any of the names on the machine. The third class is when I realized I need to find another studio or lounge to learn from. At this point, we were just following directions such as "sew to this point", "iron here". There was no real explanation of what we were doing and when asked, we were answered shortly, and the instructor abruptly moved onto the next person. Also by the third class, more students stopped coming and there were only about 8-9 of us left. For the lot left, there was only two patterns throughout the whole class that was extremely tattered, worn out, & just terrible. We had to share these patterns yet, NOTHING was explained. We were given instructions like 4 year olds "cut here"; "pin here", "stop here". Truly a mess. I didn't even finish the shirt that was being sewn because there was just a lot of waiting around and confusion across the board. There were even moments when the instructor took pictures without asking us and posted it to Instagram. One of the captions reads "I know I can get a little crazy, but we get things done". We didn't get ANYTHING done. Edit: This is the exact place to express my concerns. I am still friendly :). I understand everything you just said but this is feedback and constructive criticism whether it be private or public. If all of what you so eloquently explained, was explained and instructed prior to dollars spent, NOT A PROBLEM. But it wasn't. read more

I love it here! I finally learned how to use a sewing machine and I have a pillow, pincushion, and skirt to show for it. The classes only have 9 students, so you can actually get to know each other and ask questions. What i really like is when my first skirt proved to be going wrong at every turn, she allowed me to stay and work on it. It was really simple in the end. The pricing is the most affordable I have found, which is great. The first class was really slow though. We watched two videos showing how to do the same thing. I think just showing one would suffice. Other than that, it was all great. I can't wait to sign up for the intermediate course. read more

My experience with Shannon at Soul collections couldn't better. I took the beginners sewing classes once a week for 4 weeks, the class is 2 hours long and very well structured. In just 4 classes I learned so much! Shannon is also very accommodating as I missed my Saturday class because of work so she let me join her Thursday class! At the first class I made a pin holder which I was very proud of and proceeded to make a beautiful skirt from just a giant piece of fabric in the next 3 classes. With Shannons patients and direction I was able to do it practically on my own. I still can't believe I made this skirt!!! It's so cute! And now I have a few projects of my own I do at home. This place is AMAZING! First off, Shannon, the teacher and owner, is a God-Send! I took a beginning class and she is so patient and knowledgable. She works in the fashion industry as well as running this studio, so she really knows what she's doing and knows the best machines to use. And you learn a ton! I took the beginning class and ended up wanting to buy my own sewing machine by the end! The classes are also really fun and flexible. I messed up some of my measurements for one of my projects and although the classes are for a set time but Shannon always let us stay longer until we had finished or come back at another time. She really cares that you get a great experience out of it. The great thing about the classes too, is that you are learning through making things you take home. Trying to find the best sewing class I was most interested in learning techniques rather than walking away with something I made to show off. BUT, by having a set project, like the pin-cushion, pillow, and skirt, was a great way to teach sewing techniques (like sewing zippers, buttons, aligning fabrics, and even just mastering the sewing machine itself, which was way harder than I thought) so that you were applying more difficult techniques at a doable level by having a more challenging project each class. And in the end, it was really cool to have made stuff I could show others! The studio itself if a piece of art! It is so fun to be in. It is decorated from the pink painted ceiling pipes to the decorated patterned bathroom door handle. It's like you are in a fun sewing wonderland with great music playing as you sew. I like that she has students of all levels working at the same time, but there are times when we are given an assignment and after completion, we sit and wait for her to come back to us. I had a skirt and a top that needed to be fitted. First of all, she was a week late with the work - without notifying me. I only found out when I contacted her. She then clearly did a rush job as the skirt was finished in an amateur fashion, so we agreed that she would redo it. I even paid extra for a zipper, though I am sure we had agreed there should be one in the first place. She was late yet again with the redo. The skirt was done a little bit better, but the cloth on the top was not attached and keeps creeping up and the skirt needs to be redone again, but I am not giving her a third chance. read more

Date and Time of Incident: 07/16/2016 2:30PM-3:00PM I was looking for an introductory sewing class for my child to participate in and found a place I thought would be great through Groupon. I've purchased many deals through Groupon prior to this incident so felt comfortable with making the purchase. I purchased the Groupon special for Soul Collections "Four 1-Hour Beginner Intro to Sewing Classes" deal. Please note, the Groupon does not specify that this special offer is limited to anyone based on age, or any other protected class. After many attempts to reach the school over the phone to no avail, I decided to go in person for the assistance. Upon my arrival to the "school" I found the location to be fairly decent and looked interesting in terms of being an appealing learning environment for children. However, there was no one at the reception desk to receive customers, or so I thought. I found an older black female (race and gender only provided for business owner purposes in the event you are interested in rectifying this situation) sitting with two teenage boys which normally appeared to be that all three were either students or that the female was the parent of the two young men. Thus, I did not want to interrupt as neither one of them introduced themselves to me as being an employee of soul collections. So, I stood in wait hoping that an employee would appear soon in order to explain the registration process. To my surprise, after standing in wait for about 3-5 minutes, the female who was already there asked what she could do for me?... Still not identifying herself as an employee. Assuming that she must be an employee since she is now offering her "help", I explained the reason why I was there. She abruptly cut me off to inform that "Groupon's are not for children." I explained that I have the printout of the Groupon where it does not state any limitations in terms of age or who is not eligible for the program. She rolled her eyes and stated that she is "just telling me that the Groupon is not for children BUT she will allow me to use it beginning 1st Sunday in August... (mind you, this Groupon would expire the day before that date). Ignoring the fact that she seemed less then welcoming, I had to remind myself that this person could NOT POSSIBLY have any serious role in the company since she does not seem to care about how she receives potential customers.. her poor people skills or lack thereof is very telling of the actual business itself.. continuing to ignore her out-of-place bad attitude, I asked if I could get a schedule print out, but she continued with her rude antics and felt the need to tell me "well there isn't much you are going to be able to get accomplished with that Groupon since it's only going to cover 4 hours." Typical poor business strategy ... lure customers in with a discount or promo of sort only to put them down as if they are not to be respected because of the promo they took advantage of... If she were half savvy in business management, she would know that this $69 "promo" would allow for new customers to develop a working relationship where they would probably come back if the service is at least satisfactory... anyway I continued to ignore her offensive comments and let her know that I am well aware of what I paid for. Period. Afterwards she tried to hurry me off by asking me to text her the Groupon and she will send me the information about the class in return. She didn't even want to give this phone # where she is to be texted but rather had me play the guessing game with her between the two phone #'s listed on the website and Groupon... At that point I already knew I was not going to come back to this place because I could not imagine bringing any child to a place so careless with their reception. I can only imagine the type of service they provide to students in less expensive classes. Needless to say, I did not text her my information since she already told me that I was not welcome and I am not going back to this place nor referring anyone Soul Collections... This was a really bad experience and I am so glad that I learned about this sooner rather than later. These people seem to care more about money but I don't see what anyone would be paying for because they lack in something so fundamental and that's CUSTOMER SERVICE... Anyway, I contacted Groupon as soon as I walked out of the store and thankfully they were able to credit my money back. There are lots of places to learn to sew, I will be exploring other options. This place only got 1 star because at least the store looked the same in person as it did in the pictures... however, the friendly faces they post on the website were not present at the time of this visit. As a kid who has been sewing with Soul Collections for a while now, I would say that Soul Collections is an amazing place to learn how to sew and other gain vital skills in the craft. Before coming here I didn't really know a lot about sewing, but I was really excited about coming here thinking I would only learn how to sew doll clothes but quickly realized I would be able to sew and design anything including making my own outfits for school. The other kids in my class are very friendly and we developed a bond that I would never have made if I didn't come here. When I usually do a sewing project, the teacher is able to clearly explain the directions so I (a beginner) can understand what to do and not feel lost in the process. Overall, I think that Soul Collections is a very amazing place where I learned valuable lessons and believe that a lot of kids would enjoy coming here and have fun just like I do. read more

The instructor is kind and friendly but my class was too crowded so I did not get the attention I hoped. It seemed she was being pulled in many directions so she never took the time to explain what I needed to do next in my pattern. I was looking for a Sewing Class to take because I wanted to make my own clothes and have my own clothing line. I found Soul Collections and was super excited that I was taking my first step in accomplishing my goals and dreams. I was walking away with a pin cushion and a skirt that I'm still working on but very proud of. Being in this class was a challenge for me not only did I feel I didnt get the help I deserved but I feel like Shannon really didn't care too much. I was having a hard time threading and bobing the machine but eventually I got it but theres just certain things that didn't sit well with me. For one I was told this class requires thinking as if i didn't have any common sense. Two, I feel like i couldn't just come up to her and ask her questions about the tasks we were doing I feel like I was bothering her more than anything at least that was the Impression I got. Most times I would just ask someone else in the class since I really didn't feel comfortable going to her. Lastly I just wanted to move at my own pace Everyone should be able to move at their own pace especially when your a beginner like myself. I will continue to keep on sewing and won't let this stop me. It's sad to say but I wish I wouldv'e had a better experience here. Update: Anything to make yourself look good huh? A few weeks ago I finish the Basic Pattern Class. It was intense and loaded with knowledge. This is actually the second class i've taken at Soul Collections. The atmosphere is very peaceful.
