Wonderful gift shop off 5th Ave! The staff at this location are helpful and kind. The store is also dog friendly and I've dropped by quite a few times with my dog so she can get a treat. The store itself carries gifts, baby items, home decor, stationary, and even a refill station at the back of the store. Also they have a rewards program and a birthday reward. This is the kind of place I almost hate telling people about, and giving away the secret of exactly how I keep finding those incredibly thoughtful, quirky, and/or fun cards and gifts they seem to appreciate so very much. Annie's features excellent items for those of all ages and stripes, which seem well curated, well organized, and vary delightfully in tone from the silly to the sublime. And while you can find very nice items here, prices tend to be fairly manageable. There's even a small enough assortment of home items--organic, bespoke soaps and laundry detergents and home supplies--that you can come up with a vague reason to visit even if not gift shopping and find a thing or two for yourself. One of the best aspects of Brooklyn in general--and Park Slope in particular, it seems to me--is the ability to rather easily find unique local shops to support. I contacted Annie's through their instagram page, and within 15 mins they replied saying they could absolutely help me create a custom gift box. MaKayla pulled some Brooklyn and Bride themed items, sent me photos of each, confirmed prices and curated the most amazing gift. MaKayla even went above and beyond to purchase a bottle of wine from another store, to include it in my gift box! She also included a hand-written card. Really bummed as I came to the shop after seeing the cutest item posted by my friend on line. I went and the selection didn't disappoint and what was supposed to be less than $20 became almost $100. Everything was great until I came to the register. The associate was so friendly and kind and nice to the people in front of me but when I got to the register they were cold, standoffish and made me feel judged. Knowing that was my experience, I don't know that I'll return even though there were other items I was looking at. If you're gonna be rude, be rude to everyone or be nice to everyone but when you play favorites, it's really demoralizing. read more

Dearest Annie, I've known you now for a few years and I just can't think of any other gal in Park Slope who is as fabulous as you. I just adore you ...and here are a few reasons why: You continue to stock your store with fabulous finds. I have found myself at your store several times, a list of recipients in hand, but without the foggiest idea of what to buy. But then I remember I'm in your store and calm down - you literally have something for everybody. Kitchenware, baby stuffs, beautifully made greeting cards, and a section of rotating holiday décor. And I like that you rep your borough and your city. There's always unique Brooklyn gear and NYC tchotchkes. Your price points are not outrageous. No matter my budget I know you have me covered. I've yet to have a bad shopping experience in your store, even around Christmas time when it seemed like the entire neighborhood was there! Even when the store is packed your staff has never been anything but sweet, greeting every single person who comes in. That's always appreciated! This is my new favorite place to buy gifts for everyone. It's carefully curated, and has all manner of art books, cookbooks, other books, puzzles, candles, kitchen wares, games, and things I can only describe as a gallimaufry of knick-knackery. Most importantly, Annie herself might be the nicest woman on the planet. Let me tell you a little story, if you're not convinced by my just saying so: I recently came in with a $20, and only a $20 bill. I was going for a run (one of maybe three I went on all year) and didn't have my wallet (so no credit cards, debit cards, 15 year old condoms or ID), and I thought I'd drop by to see if there's something I could get for my Secret Santa pool (had to be under $20). Although the store is small, the selection is excellent, so I quickly found something perfect. I flipped it over, and it was $19. I approached Annie, and inquired about the tax, and explained my situation. She looked at the item briefly and said, "I think it's the last one. Why don't I just give you 50% off?" Annie, you didn't have to do that. But because you did: 1. You cost yourself $10. 2. You earned a customer for life.* 3. My Secret Santa recipient will never know that I only spent $10 on her. Cute store that took over for another general purpose store in the same spot. The one key difference is the new owners seem to cater toward the new generation of brooklynites an is definitely a nice addition to the neighborhood. I have been to Annie's Blue General Store more times than I can count, and you would think that as a returning customer, someone who works there would try to get to know your name and even just exchange small pleasantries with you. But this is NOT the experience at Annie's Blue Ribbon; instead I get a cold stare and flat "hello" from someone standing by the cash register that looks at me like I am going to steal something. I am writing this review though because I recently bought a special card and asked for an envelope. They said no. I said but this IS a card and I need an envelope. And no, they could not find a single spare envelope to spare for a CUSTOMER paying for a rather pricey card (with no envelope). This is not how you treat customers. I can deal with antisocial workers, but when NO ONE seems to go just a bit "out of there way" to help a customer, I feel like I am done. Because of this occurrence, I feel like this establishment only cares about their profit and not the customer. And I think they just lost one. read more

Nice little Park Slope boutique gift shoppe where you can find some pretty great gifts for those who are a tad difficult to buy for. Toiletries like soaps, fragrances and bath salts. Home decor, classic games, stationary and the such could be found here. Prices are a tad high but some of the items are truly unique and worth the slight splurge. The staff won't bug you the second you walk in either and they'll leave you to shop in peace which is a plus for me. Definitely going to come back and recommend this store. read more

The bodega across the street is the last sketchy piece of retail in Boerum Hill. Sketchy like 'order through the bullet proof glass' sketchy. Like I saw one of the local prostitutes and john stop by the bullet proof glass at 1 AM and order 1 condom and 1 Vitamin water sketchy. So, in the spirit of nimbyism, I'm hoping the five stars bring more yelpers. and push the late night drug scene one block over. to the new iHop. read more

This store is absolutely cute - I was almost tempted NOT to write a review cos I want this to be MY secret and no one can ever have the same things as I do. But I have decided to share the love - we should all expect a blue moon tonight. To think we almost walked by without dropping in cos silly literal me didn't think twice about the name and thought it was merely a store selling common household bric a brac and tools - I couldn't have been more wrong. From gigantic rubber ducks parodying the usual ones in bath tubs, to reprints of old maps of New York (where building numbers instead of street numbers rule), BRGS has a wonderful selection of toys & trinkets for everyone. It's a shop I wish I had cos it's obvious that the owner spends her (i am assuming it's a her) time travelling the world and just buys whatever that is special, unique and catches her fancy. And how apt a name it has - it really is a store filled with, well, general stuff. But only way cooler. A perfect store for gifts (even for someone who has Everything) or something to make yourself happy - it's hard NOT to want anything from there. Perhaps the only thing that will make one reconsider making a purchase would be the prices - doesn't cost an arm or a leg (fear not - you can find something for almost any price range, even under $10) , but I wouldn't exactly classify them highly affordable either. While walking to meet a friend I was stopped by the "spread love it's the brooklyn way" marked on the window. While looking in slightly curiously I saw a store full of all kinds of books, gadgets, gifts, cards....it's the perfect place to find a gift for the quirky person in your life! The stores manager greeted me with a really happy smile and hello...which is really sweet seeing that i walked in about 10 minutes to close. I wandered around and felt like a kid in a candy store. Maybe it was the bright lights...or maybe it was the book on things that might kill you (Hypochondriacs Guide to diseases.) ..I don't know. Annie's is basically my go-to present store in Park Slope. The front table features an ever-changing array of seasonally-relevant knick-knacks for all your friends and family. The items on the walls see a bit slower evolution and seem to maintain the same themes (booze and brooklyn-themed presents in the front right, male/female beauty products a little off by the cash register, etc.). They cater to every age group, from baby to adult. Prices can be hefty but I've been surprised to find some reasonably-priced items. I'm a bit of stickler with non-toxic cleaning products. In the back, Annie's sells glass laundry and dish soap bottles. You can fill up your bottle with detergent or dish soap - sustainable in so many ways! read more

Just yesterday I stopped by and bought a copy of The Brooklyn Cookbook for someone on my gift list, and I'll be going back soon to buy a copy of the Baby Mix Me a Drink board book (Google it! It's hilarious) for my friends' new baby. I was also tempted by their ceramic humidifiers, their eco-friendly housecleaning products, and their wide array of unusual kitchen items. I used to love this store when it was in Boerum Hill/ Downtown Brooklyn, but since the move, I feel like a lot of their more quirky items have been removed for a more watered-down version. Not sure if this was because I came during Christmas and they were restocking, but I hope they bring back some of the quirk. Adorable little store just opened on the corner of State and Bond, across from one of the skeeviest bodegas left in Boerum Hill. What would my daily commute be without 7am sexual advances from the local drunk? But I digress.
