I'm usually here every other weekend because my 2 boys are obsessed with trains! However this past weekend we had my son's 4th birthday party here! It was my first time planning a party for him so the stress was definitely high. Goleta Depot was the perfect place to host his party! It was so easy to make arrangements with them. Rebecca was sooo kind professional and informative! She was able to help alleviate a lot of my worries. Seeing all the kids so excited about the train rides made me so happy! I'm so happy I accidentally found this gem of a place a little over a year ago! Thank you Goleta Depot!

For $4 Dear Hubby and I took a ride on the charming tiny gauge railroad. The ride was longer than expected, snaking around the ground of the museum's property. It allowed adults to feel like kids, and surely kids love it. The landscaping can be up close and personal if you don't follow the rules about not reaching out to grab for the greenery. Located next to the Stowe House and Rancho La Patera, the South Coast Railroad Museum is a small collection of buildings and items relating to the railroading life. The restored Goleta Depot features prominently in the property. Sidewalks and other pathways lead around the grounds, making for easy walking. When we checked in yesterday, a family party was happening in a shaded area near the start of the train ride. Everything seems low key here, from free parking to free admission. Donations are welcome, of course. They even have a free lending library near the entrance, housed in a miniature depot building. A station agent's office is replicated in one room of the depot building. The gift shop has a lot of t-shirts and other railroadiana items to purchase. Great place for families with younger kids, especially. You should have seen the little ones' eyes light up as we motored by on the train and everyone exchanged waves. The engineer and conductor were super friendly and just right for their jobs as caretakers of the little train that could delight visitors.

Always a great place to visit to explore Southern Pacific railroad and Santa Barbara history. Friendly staff clean maintained grounds.

My kids are huge fans of mini steam engine trains. We are regulars at Goat Junction in Costa Mesa and we like to visit Disney mini trains at Griffith Park. The city of Goleta is just north Santa Barbara. Cute little town. This place is definately worth taking the kids! $2.50 per ride. Hours of operation are limited, weekends only from 1pm-4pm. The train is smaller than the train that we have been on. So the train can only hold 2 families. Go early and line up early if you are on a time schedule. The museum here is self walk through. You can tour an old train container. Its pretty neat! The place would be really cool for family picnics or just to get the kids outside. My boys enjoyed it! The conductor informed us that Christmas time the place is well decorated with holiday joy! Some of the Christmas ornaments were not all taken down because they probably didnt see all the balls they hung up! It was a fun game to spot the balls while on the ride!

Goleta/Santa Barbara, California. I was disappointed to find that this place is not a true train museum. They have a building, gift shop, a makeshift depot, a couple real trains and some gimmicky train ride for kids. It's a hybrid museum/theme park catered for kids to ride a short train with a decent sized track. Access/Roads: A Paved off a main road: Los Carneros Road off the 101. Parking: A Plenty in the lot. Distance: A Santa Barbar is appx 100 miles north of Greater Los Angeles. Goleta is where UCSB is located an the museum/park is up the street. Located between the fire station and muslim center/building. Costs: A Free to walk around. Rides cost unknown amount. Nearby Attractions: Shares the same parking lot with the historic stow house and the Los Carneros Lake. It's not worth it for adults. Might be fun if you have kids since there is plenty space to run afoul, make weird noises, chase birds, break stuff, and do normal kid stuff. The historic stow house is more of an attraction than this place. Safe travelings friends

Cute place to check out. If you are in the area, and in need for an activity that doesn't take long, this is a nice place to visit. Once you're off 101 be careful at the roundabout, it's tricky. Otherwise, this place is easy to find, it also has free parking. The Railroad Museum is free to visit. You can roam around on the property and check everything out. Check their site before you visit. They have the museum opened Thursdays-Sundays from 1pm-4 pm. Around the holidays they also have a cute train you can hope on for cheap. This is a great place for kids. And nice to get one more slice of California history.

Really cute place with a historic rail road depot and mini train you can ride on. Lots of history to read and some cool little exhibits. Sits next to the Goleta historic museum which is also worth checking out. Just a nice place to hang and walk around for a half an hour.

Every exhibit actually keeps them engaged not just looking, but doing. The interactive tables (like the spinning drum and dice games) were a hit. My kids didn't want to leave and kept going back to the same stations. It's also really clean, organized, and easy to navigate even with little ones. Pricing was reasonable for what you get abbout $25 for adults, $20 for kids, and under 2 is free, which is nice. Staff was friendly and everything felt well-maintained. You can tell they designed this place with kids in mind but adults still have fun too. Definitely a solid family day trip spot from LA. Would come back again

The water exhibit could use some love. Some of the hydraulic levers was either not working or you had to really work at it. My toddler was not strong enough to use them. One thing I like is that we were able to leave and come back after lunch. We got to make the most if our trip. I'm sure we'll ge back next year.

They've been in their current location since 1923, and the location itself, to me anyway, is part of the draw. Not only is it a museum, but it's also a nature preserve, rescue aviary, and dinosaur theme park. :) The Good: * Fairly inexpensive to visit at $20/adult and $15/child * If you buy a membership ($115-450) to the museum, it also includes a membership to their sister aquarium (also in Santa Barbara), the Sea Center. * Wonderful little area in the back with some short trails, a creek, and dinosaurs for kids to explore. * If you love geology, then you'll love their geology exhibit; they have so many amazing rocks and gems on display. * Aviary with injured and rehabbing raptors * Nature art gallery was beautiful * Friendly staff * Tours available * Lots of info on animals and insects of the area The Meh: * Some of the exhibit rooms are a bit cramped, so they can get full fast even without many visitors. The Ugly: * They have a butterfly garden, but it's closed during the winter months, which just happened to coincide with our visit. :( Conclusion: Terrific museum for both young and old.

It's also really affordable, which makes it such a good activity whether you're with friends, family, or on a date. For the price, you honestly get a lot out of it. The best part was definitely the touch tanks. We got to touch sharks, starfish, and sea anemones, which was such a cool experience. Feeling the smooth skin of the sharks and the slightly sticky texture of the anemones was actually so interesting. The staff guide you on how to gently interact with them, so it feels safe for both you and the animals. The whole place has a chill, coastal vibe that makes it really enjoyable to walk through. It's not overwhelmingly big, so you can take your time at each exhibit and actually read about the sea life. There's such a variety of colorful fish and marine animals, and it's fun seeing everything up close. Overall, such a wholesome and interactive experience. That was before we discovered the "Passport 2 History" program. When we did get the Passport and reviewed which spots were in it, I was glad to see this property listed, as an incentive to go back. We made a return visit two months ago, on a warm Saturday afternoon. It was lovely to see the vintage architecture spotlighted against a brilliant autumn sky. Warmer than usual, with no wind, it was a great time to be at the property. There was a young woman covering the gift shop. She told us that while the grounds were open, they weren't able to offer tours of the house that day. "Shortage of docents". I don't know the situation with who currently owns / runs the house - is it a foundation, the City, the County? Many historic properties were deeded by descendants of original owners to local municipalities to be shared with the public going forward. I'm sure that it's a challenge for any legacy property like this to get enough docents lined up, trained, and scheduled. They would mostly be volunteers, after all. While it was disappointing to not revisit the interior of the mansion, we did collect out P2H sticker, then spent time wandering the grounds. That was something we hadn't done previously. The lawn areas and mature palm trees are serene and beautiful. Going around the perimeter of the main house yielded new views I don't recall before. We snapped some photos, then adjourned to the train museum next door. The next time we're in the area, we'll call ahead to see if they are offering tours that day. Might be wise to do the same!

There has always been something that caught my eyes and ears when I hear the words, "Art". Now, I don't know anything about art, nor do I know which was is up. I just know that I live near an incredible venue and hadn't yet attended or reviewed! So many things I am updating in 2026. Here is the 1st one: I walked across the main drag and up the front stairs to the museum. There were a few docents (I assume) sitting at the front desk area that took my payment for entering. Thankfully, I didn't have (unrealistic) expectations on what to expect as this was my first art museum experience. It appeared there was a bit of development/construction going on as some of the areas were closed or marked off. After I paid the entrance fee, they handed me a map and I was on my way. It would have been nice to have had some interchange with any of them, as I told them I was a first-timer. Oh well. Such is life in 2026. I took a lot of pictures, and truth be told, as I said before, I don't know which was is up or what I was looking at most of the time. I just know that visually speaking, the entire visit was beautiful! Being able to look around at my own pace was very nice. Although, TBH, it would have bene nice to have bene able to ask someone a question or two, but alas, that didn't break my trip or overall experience. I was hoping they had a gift shop where I could have bought some bookmarks or some art pictures. There wasn't one, unfortunately. I cannot wait to go back! Highly, highly recommend a visit!
