So much history in this building, make it a point to visit. The docent was so knowledgeable and kind. This museum has interactive activities for kids and adults. The history of Santa Barbara, The Channel Islands and animals that live on it, different boats, ships, vessels, inventor's history of updated diving helmets for abalone and oil rigs; just so much information. It was wonderful and so educational. We really enjoyed walking around the museum for a few hours. There are short documentaries to watch as well about oil spills and ships disastrous voyages. Stop by, you won't be disappointed you did!

Why have Public EV chargers if you're just going to use it for parking a golf cart and EV car? I was needing a charge and shopping in the area, but noooooooooo. Can't charge anything if you're just going to block the spaces.

Such a cute museum!!! This is a great museum to stop by if you're in the area needing to kill some time. The first two floors have a bunch of interactive activities, and lots of interesting models/information all over. If you go up to the fourth floor, you get to see the view of the beach + the city! FYI, they are a part of the Museums 4 All program, so they accept EBT entrance!

This is a pretty small but cool aquatic museum. I paid $15 for one adult and one student pricing but you can also get admission for 2 for like $7 on Groupon so definitely check that out to save a few bucks. They have pretty cool exhibits here including some that you can interact with. I finished the whole place in about 45 min so it's pretty small. They have a 4 floor that you can get to by taking the elevator in the front. It gets you the rooftop view of the ocean.

Great place to take the family. Reasonable pricing and free admission for active duty military and veterans. Plenty of exhibits and historical facts given in chronological order. Multi-story museum with stairs and an elevator. Museum is located very close to restaurants and shops. Free parking (90 minutes or less) located nearby. Beautiful views from the Harbor.

If you want to kill like 1-1.5 hours, then check this place out. I didn't know what to expect and this surpassed them. It was really cool to see all the displays like the lighthouse but there was an interactive deep sea fishing experience that my nephews had a ball with. They even had a scavenger hunt educational activity for the kids to do. Which was fun for them because it got them to stop at each exhibit and answer questions. Since we had kids of all ages, they had different levels of scavenger hunts so it wasn't too easy or too difficult. The interactive deep sea fishing was so much fun! You could chose which type of fish you wanted to catch and you had to reel them in. It was surprisingly more difficult than it looked. Definitely worth stopping by and learning a few things.

Founded by a group of fishermen, divers, and sailors: GREAT MARITIME MUSEUM. My wife was not excited but after a couple minutes inside she was as joyful and curious as our kids were. There is a great mix of sea-life, santa barbara history, scale models, and tactile/interactive displays. You can easily spend an hour here. You can see the lady-of-the-ship masthead and sci-fi looking diving suit beckoning you in from the outside steps. You can also go with a volunteer who will give you FREE access to the fourth floor and the nicest view of the harbor and SB in the area. I loved the Sailor Sam Tattoo-a-tron. It uses a projector to "tattoo" a traditional sailor tattoo onto you. I loved the narrators voice and learned a lot about naval tattoos and their meaning. The old diving helmets and suits were also very interesting, the lengths people went to experience ocean depths being the fountainhead for our current deepsea technology and understanding of what's deep beneath those waves. There's a fun submarine mockup with real periscope that lets you look out on the pier our kids spent a lot of time on.

Fun exhibition about tattoos, both in person and available on a virtual tour.

What an incredibly fun and informative place to learn about Santa Barbara and all that the ocean around us has to offer. So much history, and interesting facts about surfing, explorers, shipwrecks, Channel Islands, diving technology, whaling, the Chumash, history of the Waterfront, lighthouses, and even Santa Barbara Lighthouse Women Keepers. And yes, Mermaids too. And as we're always looking for fun places for kids, their Children's Gallery is educational as well. Also visit their fun Virtual Tours on their website. This fun museum space is located in the Santa Barbara Harbor amongst all the fascinating fishing boats, and several premier dining spots. Plenty of parking at the Harbor, and a fun way to travel to and fro from Stearns Wharf is on the water via the Lil' Toot Water Taxi. Also be sure to visit their Museum Store. Lots of cool Santa Barbara gifts, including clothing, books and DVDs, and more information about their different membership levels. They also have one of Santa Barbara's best Private and Corporate Event Venues. We recently attended a Leadership Training event in their upstairs meeting space, and it made the event all the more enjoyable. Thank you Heather for helping us coordinate our event, and also for the grand tour.

A lot of fun and interactive experiments for the children.

The last weekend beckoned me to drive into the dismal clouds. Lucky for me the skies opened up bright and blue. They led me to what I thought was Heaven. Close enough, Santa Barbara. The Maritime Museum was my first stop. Inexpensive, clean, and great for kids and adults were my first thoughts. There were interactive games for the children such as reeling in a big fish, sailing, surfing, and learning about whales to start. Fantastic guided tours and interpretive tour are offered. A lot of fun and a fantastic "field trip" for the whole family. Enjoy.

Cute museum with so many things to learn about the area. Had a great time visiting with my 13 year old son. Learned about the history of Santa Barbara, the lighthouse keepers, military, etc. Worth the visit.

    Bill our amazing docent

Jason and Bill made our docent led experience AMAZING. The knowledge and attention shared with our small group of young 7th graders was much more than expected. We cannot thank this museum enough for such a great experience. Highly highly highly recommend!

Pricing was reasonable for what you get abbout $25 for adults, $20 for kids, and under 2 is free, which is nice. Staff was friendly and everything felt well-maintained. The lactation pod was super loud and not a great place to pump, luckily had the sensory cave. Their infant and toddler room is for walkers only because they don't close it off and make people take their shoes off so definitely not okay for babies like they claim who need a clean environment. Also very little toys. Better if you can already climb and walk. Expensive! They have a 90 mile rule for using reciprocal kids museums and Pasadena's Kidspace is 89 miles away. $25 an adult is not worth it for the parents of a non crawler.

They've been in their current location since 1923, and the location itself, to me anyway, is part of the draw. Not only is it a museum, but it's also a nature preserve, rescue aviary, and dinosaur theme park. :) The Good: * Fairly inexpensive to visit at $20/adult and $15/child * If you buy a membership ($115-450) to the museum, it also includes a membership to their sister aquarium (also in Santa Barbara), the Sea Center. * Wonderful little area in the back with some short trails, a creek, and dinosaurs for kids to explore. * If you love geology, then you'll love their geology exhibit; they have so many amazing rocks and gems on display. * Aviary with injured and rehabbing raptors * Nature art gallery was beautiful * Friendly staff * Tours available * Lots of info on animals and insects of the area The Meh: * Some of the exhibit rooms are a bit cramped, so they can get full fast even without many visitors. The Ugly: * They have a butterfly garden, but it's closed during the winter months, which just happened to coincide with our visit. :( Conclusion: Terrific museum for both young and old.

The best part was definitely the touch tanks. We got to touch sharks, starfish, and sea anemones, which was such a cool experience. There has always been something that caught my eyes and ears when I hear the words, "Art". Now, I don't know anything about art, nor do I know which was is up. I just know that I live near an incredible venue and hadn't yet attended or reviewed! So many things I am updating in 2026. Here is the 1st one: I walked across the main drag and up the front stairs to the museum. There were a few docents (I assume) sitting at the front desk area that took my payment for entering. Thankfully, I didn't have (unrealistic) expectations on what to expect as this was my first art museum experience. It appeared there was a bit of development/construction going on as some of the areas were closed or marked off. After I paid the entrance fee, they handed me a map and I was on my way. It would have been nice to have had some interchange with any of them, as I told them I was a first-timer. Oh well. Such is life in 2026. I took a lot of pictures, and truth be told, as I said before, I don't know which was is up or what I was looking at most of the time. I just know that visually speaking, the entire visit was beautiful! Being able to look around at my own pace was very nice. Although, TBH, it would have bene nice to have bene able to ask someone a question or two, but alas, that didn't break my trip or overall experience. I was hoping they had a gift shop where I could have bought some bookmarks or some art pictures. There wasn't one, unfortunately. I cannot wait to go back! Highly, highly recommend a visit!

I was a little disappointed at the lack of flowers in the whole property. There were only some poppies on the meadow where you walk in and that was it. I also didn't like how there are literally no rangers or anyone to help you around the trails. I understand you are just on your own, but it's dangerous that there's no one to help you if something goes wrong. No First Aid Kit, either. I also remember them having a big, beautiful waterfall on the trail and it wasn't there this time. Why? The museum also features a permanent exhibit called The Story of Santa Barbara. It's the perfect introduction to the Central Coast's long history of the native Chumash people, the influence of Mexico and the Spanish, the 1925 Earthquake and more. Upon my most recent visit was an unexpected discovery, an exhibit on Clarence Mattei: Portrait of a Community. I knew of the historic Mattei's Tavern, Inn and Stagecoach Stop after it was recently renovated and became part of a new luxury Auberge Resort in Los Olivos. Little did I know that he became a well-known artist. His first free-sketch was of Leutze's 1851 painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware at only 15 years of age! Prominent guests of the Tavern recognized his skill and sponsored his studies in San Francisco and New York. To this day you can see his art on the walls of the Tavern, but also here. Another current temporary exhibit is of Old Spanish Days/Fiesta, Santa Barbara's pride and joy. 2023 is its 99th anniversary! I had no idea that Fiesta was originally started to celebrate the opening of the Lobero Theatre. To this day, it remains the oldest running theater in California. The photos of almost a century caught by camera and shared at this exhibit are spectacular. All in all, whether it's your first visit to Santa Barbara or you're a life-long native, a visit to this museum is a must!

I would definitely come back here to learn about the house and to take the guided tour. This wasn't the purpose for me coming today but the gentleman who works here noted that it's a great tour and I know friends who have enjoyed learning about the family and the history of the house, getting a deeper dive of information. I came here with some friends for their first hosted event Sound Bath. A wellness day if you will. From start to finish everything was very organized and thoughtful. The staff hosting the event and the spiritual wellness guide and sound healer was wonderful. Everyone was nice and you felt welcomed. Not pretentious and just very positive and good vibes. We had a nice group and everyone was respectful and on time for the sound bath so it went off without issue. It was a relaxing experience and the grounds were very nice to hold this outdoor event. The birds were chirping, the sun was shining, we found an area with shade, very nice. Very faint sounds of cars in the distance here and there which wasn't ideal but out of their control and once things settled in you really couldn't hear much external noise. After the relaxing sound bath we were offered tea and light pastry snacks. I opted for a water and began exploring the grounds instead of partaking in the refreshments. The grounds are lush and lovely, very zen. Loved the beautiful trees and walkways with small fountains and running water. It was green and pretty all around from the recent rains. Definitely a great location for events and to learn a little SB history. I will definitely do my research and come back again soon.
