This sandwich place was very close to where we stayed in Sydney and there was always a long line, so I had to try it. The sandwiches peoole were getting looked massive. My husband and I shared ham sandwich and it was really good. The bread was chewy and soft at the same time. All the veggies they put on are fresh. I recommend putting carameralized carrots. I was bid sad to see how little ham they used tho. They said their recommendations are chicken schnitzel and spicy chicken. We've been wanting to try South Dowling Sandwiches for a while now but because it's only open Monday- Friday, that's been a challenge when we don't work nearby. We took the opportunity on a day off to visit. Knowing it's popularity, we ordered online which was awesome because it meant they were ready on arrival. Now you can get a sandwich pretty much anywhere these days, but these are more than just your regular sandwich. They are massive gourmet sandwiches, on the softest, freshest bread ever! You can get some of their listed options or alter them on the order if there's something you can't eat. We ordered the "Jimmy Sandwich" on brown bread (you can opt brown or white) with Chilli chicken, lettuce, avocado, caramelised carrot, cucamber, spanish onion, rocket & red pesto. We added some pickles. A delicious and huge sandwich that kept us full for hours. Some other examples include sandwiches with Veggies, chicken schnitzel, ham, poached chicken, smoked salmon and even special add ons of caramelised carrot or potato salad. There's also salads served in little takeaway boxes if you prefer. Salads are dressed with a light balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Off work sick, I was finally able to sink my chompers into this pocket rocket sandwich / salad shop. This place is a tight operation 12-2pm. The staff churn out stuffed and I mean STUFFED sandwich after salad bowl after sandwich. It's not just the size of these satisfying lunches that turns one-timers into regulars - their ingredients got flair too. Rocket that looks like it was foraged in the wild, a homemade "red pesto" teeming with flavour and crunchy golden chicken shnitty to put pubs to shame. The most unique though? Those caramelized carrots! Sweet and chewy twisted tendrils that make you guess, just how did they make these? I've never heard of this place before, so when my partner said there's a good sandwich place nearby I was all ears and we zipped right over. I made the mistake of coming here after a dental procedure so half of my mouth was numb and I couldn't taste anything except with the right/right rear side of my tongue, which means I'll need to revisit this place for a proper verdict. Anyway, since I could only taste bitter, sour, and semi-salty take this review with a grain of...salt. I had the chicken schnitzel special on brown for $12.50 (typically $7.50) and the special comes with boiled egg, caramelised carrots, potato salad, avocado, tomato, and cheese. With my half assed tongue I could tell that this was delicious, especially the caramelised carrots. I could do without the potato salad though, that was just unnecessary filler, same goes for the egg. The sandwiches are pretty big, not Malibu big but decent sized enough that if you weren't that hungry you could take one home to eat later. Best sandwiches in Sydney? No, but pretty good nonetheless. After a small wait outside the entrance, you'll see all the fresh produce pilling up in stacks, which only confirms they understand how busy they can get. The modest and homely kitchen resonates with care and attention, where they'd rather keep you waiting a few more minutes, than serve anything less than perfect. One thing to remember is that these sandwiches are huge, enough to feel two people - so If you prefer, eat half now, and take the rest home, or back to work to eat later. Due to the rush, the staff were quite militant in getting people through; a deer in the headlights, I chose the smoked salmon on brown bread, for ten dollars. Everything was lovely and fresh, though the amount of lettuce smothered the taste of the salmon. I'd either customise my sandwich or choose a different flavour next time. Payment was kind of chaotic, as they pass the sandwiches over to a cashier, who wasn't asking for payment. They only take EFTPOS over $15, which meant I had to skip getting one of their brownies (2.50 for small, 5.00 for large - finally, someone charges a fair price for brownies!), so I'll have to try them next time. Would I return? I would; though I probably wouldn't plan around it. There are several places in Paddington/Darlinghurst and the CBD that charge less for delicious sandwich-style lunch options that are better value for money. Um, YUM. South Dowling Sandwiches is another one of these cult Surry Hills sandwich places, except the special here for me is the Tuna Salad. The cues down the street at lunchtime are a hint of how good this salad is. People come far and wide for this salad (well, I have driven from my place on the other side of town specially). This of course is no average tuna salad with the combination of ingredients including caramelized carrots, beetroot, beans, potato, cucumber, roma tomatoes, lettuce, mayo and of course tuna. Their shop is small and basic just from looking at the shop from the street you most definitely do not expect the culinary delights they produce on a daily basis. First of all the bread is exquisite.
