Night to Shine is an unforgettable worldwide celebration event, centered on God's love, honoring and valuing people with special needs... until all are celebrated! Once again, we came together as a community to celebrate Night to Shine event on February 6th. I had the honored to be part of this amazing event. During the night we were running low on materials, by the grace of God miraculously we had exactly what we needed to make 95 corsages and boutonnières. All 35 corsages and 65 boutonnières were made in 3. 5 hours. The volunteers are amazing with no previous experience at all. I am always amazed how much love, care and humankind these volunteers give unconditionally. read more

One of the best Spiritual places I ever been to in along time! Pastor JR an the pastoral staff! Are a amazing! From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave to go home you feel you were very well welcomed and you belong! But even says on the outside of the building welcome home! Southhills claims to be a rescuer of failing churches yet with the exception of one in Idaho every church outside of the L.A. area they've merged with has either disassociated with them or even worse completely closed its doors. read more

We initially reviewed the South Hills Church in Burbank more than two years ago. We liked it then, but my wife and I LOVE it now (2024)! Consistently over those two years, we have enjoyed (and grown from): 1) the funny, provocative, practical, very real gospel preaching from Campus Pastor JR Carmichael; 2) the rousing-and-reverent worship times (great worship leaders and band!); 3) the open, insightful, and helpful small groups for our demographic (and many other demographics); 4) the widely diverse mix of attendees' ages and ethnicities, really reflecting God's expansive creativity and love for all people of all tongues, tribes, and nations; 5) the church's many "Love the 818" opportunities for helping the surrounding area, as well as helping needy folks in other parts of the world. We have participated in all the above, and have found more and more reasons to stay, invite friends and neighbors, and more consistently spread the great news of Jesus (and South Hills Burbank) to everyone around us. Honestly, my wife and I are pretty imperfect people. But since South Hills Burbank says it's "the perfect place for imperfect people," we truly feel like we fit in there wonderfully! read more

Unwelcoming church, tried to say hi to the congregation but very exclusive, no diversity.

We found this place on the internet (possibly Yelp) but almost did not make it there. My husband and I had decided it was time to do something different than what we had been doing (long story). On our way there we passed by another church on Magnolia Blvd. referred to (by locals) as "The W" and thought about stopping there, but for whatever reason, we kept driving and made it to South Hills Burbank. South Hills Burbank is a warm, welcoming group of believers. The staff is super nice. The facility is clean and the whole experience was positive. They are family friendly. Dave, the campus pastor is friendly but somewhat reserved. The rest of the staff is equally friendly and dedicated. Overall, this is a nice facility, with loving people, who reach out to their community in obedience to God. I recommend this place to anyone within driving distance. This Church has really changed my relationship with God. They are not about being religious, but rather about giving back and having compassion and relationships with others. Even though the Pastors have changed during the Pandemic, the message is still the same, "The perfect place for imperfect people"... Not about judging. They have a very diverse congregation and if you are looking to connect more with the community, I suggest joining a growth group. There's fun events here and there for families and kids. I really liked this church at first. I loved the informal setting and progressive messaging. I would listen to the podcast every week as well as going. Then the messages on the podcast started getting pretty judgemental. One was about sex and it basically said that it's something that is for marriage only and the more partners you have the less connection you will feel. Shortly after this one was a message about money and how it's God's money not yours. This was followed by a pretty conveinent message about a fundraising drive for the church. Still I continued to follow the church because I didn't want to give up on it after two messages I didn't agree with. The final straw for me was when I was hospitalized for depression. I really wanted to speak to Pastor Dave while in the hospital. I wasn't able to reach him by phone or email. Two weeks AFTER I was out of the hospital I was told 3 weeks from that point Pastor Dave could give me 15 minutes only at a specific time. Really?! I did not respond and stopped going. I don't understand how you can't make time in your schedule to someone reaching out to you from a hospital. And 15 minutes only?? That's barely enough time to explain my situation. I really liked this church at the beginning and was hoping I'd finally found a church home but I found it disappointing that the messages became so judgemental and that I couldn't reach the pastor from the hospital I was at for 5 days. When I am ready to go back to church I will not be returning to South Hills again. read more

This church is a real beautiful place. I know that at a certain time in my life I was really struggling within myself. A friend of mine who attends this church decided to invite me, and I felt that presence within that told me I needed to go. I find myself looking forward to listening to Pastor Dave speak and I look forward to going home and reading more into what he had talked about during church. I take my daughter with me and she loves the KidNation area for the 2-5 year olds. She always leaves with tons of art, a smile on her face, and a lot to tell me about that she learned that day. This church has been blessed with amazing youth pastors and people of many musical talents that lead in singing worship at the beginning of every service. About a year ago. I called the church and wrote a message to the church web site to asked to speak to a pastor. Two weeks later no responses. Then I called a week later and young lady took my information and said Pastor Dave would get back to me. A week later nothing, then I called again and she said Pastor Dave was on a retreat and he would call me back in a week and still nothing. Called a week later and was told Pastor Dave was in a meeting. So she did email me back on that same day and said Pastor Dave was free in the afternoon after 2 pm. He did call me and I told him about what I was going through. I was surprised after I told him my problems he said "What do you want from me?" I said I was looking for a good church and pastor I can trust and ask for guidance. He just said please go to our web site and see when our church services start. Our conversation was ephemeral and all I can say I wish him a better Pastor to someone who is hurting and asking for help than he was to me and not be sophomoric. read more

I was a bit worried about attending a small church but let me tell you, this place may be small but it's huge with love. You don't feel judged or ignored at South Hills. I came to check it out with a friend because she didn't want to attend alone and I ended staying and even volunteering on my first day. My husband and I visited South Hills Burbank on a Sunday in late 2015 and have been attending ever since! We married in 2014 and went through many highs and lows, we knew we needed something, someone, bigger than ourselves. The messages at SHB are so practical, it is easy to relate and apply. I moved to sleepy little Burbank 4.5 years ago. I found myself lost and alone raising 2 young kids. I walked through the doors of South Hills Church and instantly knew I was home. I have seen and been to many churches that claim to be this and that BUT South Hills is REALLY all it claims to be...a perfect place for imperfect people. I moved to Burbank one year ago and commute to San Diego most weekends, where we attend Journey Community Church in La Mesa. Began spending a few weekends in Burbank and wanted to find a local church similar to Journey. We tried a couple of churches in the area and the found South Hills which was a perfect fit. We love this church, the staff and Pastor Dave are all great. The other philosophy of Love God, Love People, Love Life is evident the minute you walk through the door. The sign on the door says no perfect people allowed and they mean it, everyone is accepted. Come in your "Sunday Best", jeans and flip flops or anything in between. Ages range from teens to senior citizens. The worship team is amazing and sing today's popular Christian music such as Chris Tomlin heard today. If you are looking for new church try this one! I'd been looking for a church in LA for about 4 months. Nothing felt like "me". I walked into South Hills because I liked the sound of the music. I knew absolutely no one when I walked in, but immediately I felt like people cared that I was there. And everyone was so normal, not uptight at all. They even have coffee, tea, and donut holes when you walk in. At first I didn't see the sanctuary, then a really kind guy said "Welcome!" and pointed to the correct door. As it turns out, he was the pastor. That was a really good sign...the pastor is a normal guy :) The sermon was great, and they have been great ever since. South Hills has been a game changer in the way I do Church! I have been coming here for a full year now and it's really hard to put the way i feel about this Church in one tiny review. Being brought up in a Christian home my whole life has put me in many different Churches. This one though, goes above and beyond in the way that they love on people. From the moment you walk in, it just feels like home. It is hard to explain but everyone is so friendly and you never feel judged. There is such a wide spectrum, from people who are first time Church goers to people who have been in Church their whole lives. I think thats part of what makes this place so beautiful. I did like this church and I tried very much to make it my church home for the few months I chose to attend. I liked the message and the feel of this church but I felt ignored and avoided. Pastor Dave was always on point and very friendly and spoke to me and my son week after week. Sadly he was only one of the few people that did, and I'm NOT counting the greeters...they were constantly ignoring me and or serving strange looks so after about 3 months I stopped attending. I'm not one to just be ignored in my own community or otherwise, so this was an unsettling thing for me. I've been around enough to know the difference between folks just not interested in getting to know you, whether its a basic lack of interest to intimidation or just plain racism. Unfortunately for me it was the latter...Now yes there are other blacks and POC that attend this church, many were very quick to introduce themselves and made a point to say hello. I should also point out that many of them are in interracial relationships and or well integrated within their local community so it made sense. While one or two people may have spoken here or there, I was often met with stern glances or people pretending to not see me at all (I'm 5'9 and not a small person) and found myself having to speak first to church personnel. My father was a pastor and I grew up in the church. Its very rare that any church employee hasn't been instructed to greet the congregation especially new attendees. The nail in the coffin was when I brought my adult daughter to service. I didn't mention the issue to her at all. After service, she asked if I noticed any ill treatment due to prejudice or racism. Simply put it's just not the warm friendly vibe you'd expect from a faith based establishment, well at least for people like me. Had I been caucasian or could pass for anything other than black my experience may have been different. I write this not because I want to bash them or dissuade other POC to try this church and trust me I have attended what some would refer to as a "white church" and felt exactly at home. All color aside, it all comes down to people just coming together to worship the Lord. If they desire having a diverse congregation and wonder why some people of color aren't staying, here's one of the reasons why. read more

Thank you GOD! I feel Gods presence every service. I love the growth group I am apart of and I am looking forward to joining others. This church makes it easy to serve within and outside of the church. I love community service so I'm just completely in love! I'm a 25 year old African American and single. I don't feel uncomfortable or out of place going to church alone, and that is HUGE for me compared to past experiences. I can't thank God enough! I love South Hills! Different than every Church I experienced so far...in the fact that the lights are dim, the service is short and the worship music a joyful noise:)...WOW! I first visit the Church, Christmas Eve 2015, and since then it became my community of fellow believers, regardless of your stage in faith you are very welcomed and encouraged to grow in your relationship with Jesus. Love God, love others, love life. While the service is short, about an hour, still presents a deep insight message from both Old and New Testament.... I was raised Christian back home in Romania, but truly follow and love Jesus with all my heart was in my early twenties and all I can say in the words of D.L. Moody "I like my way of doing it better than your way of not doing it." And South Hills Church is doing it, it may not be to everyone's liking but is pastor's Dave vision and the team in using their methods and talents to reach people to the Lord. I came to South Hills in October 2016. It is truly the warmest, kindest church I've ever attended. The pastor and his wife are kind people--they acknowledge and talk to you. Everyone is welcome, regardless of what you may or may not believe. What made it easy for me to attend is when I saw the sign at the entrance reading, "No Perfect People Allowed." After searching for a church, I happened to find this one a couple years ago and immediately felt connected. The Pastoral staff is devoted and attentive to the needs of each person. Pastor Dave's sermons are practical and help me to apply the scriptures to my everyday life. The growth groups provide an opportunity for me to get to know others, connect, laugh and even learn a little something valuable. My kids love coming to this church!
