I would not recommend this business because the owner does not follow his own business rules and policies or the values of the United Tang Soo Do Federation. I understand learning Tang Soo Do comes with a level of physical contact and instruction expected in a martial art, I also have an expectation of professionalism and respect as a student, as a parent, as an adult and as a seamstress. Locke's Karate Academy did not meet my expectations.

He also kept the 8 months of our pre-paid amount of service which were never rendered because the child/customer chose not return to the academy out of fear of the abusive owner. Only after the 5 efforts on our part to communicate with Locke for a resolution, did we finally get a certified letter giving us the insulting two options of: 1) giving us back only 37% of our prepaid 8months of classes-never rendered, or 2) transfer our full pre-paid amount to someone else in his school upon his approval. Those options only reaffirm Locke's lack of integrity. We were told by his mother that he would not be teaching the children because the children were scared of him. Parents do your research-ask questions. Throughout this process we found out other families who have had similar experiences.

"Bugei" refers to the adaptation or refinement of those tactics and techniques to facilitate systematic instruction and dissemination within a formal learning environment. My son (Matthew) began his martial arts education at 6 years of age. After about a year and a half, we realized that the dojo he trained at was only looking for name recognition, and not to instill values and knowledge taught in true martial arts. My son was sad to take this temporary leave from the karate world, but the owner was not the type of person we wanted as a mentor to our son. Approximately a year later, we were introduced to Tamashii Black Belt Academy, aka Tamashii Karate. Here we met the most amazing group of people. Everyone, from the students, to their families, to the instructors and most importantly the owner, Linda Hanson. The lessons taught come from the top, and trickle down from there. Daily I am thankful for this organization! Many people have come and gone, as happens with all organizations, but Kyoshi Linda has continued to maintain the integrity of the Japanese art of Shotokan karate while also providing knowledge in other martial arts to her students. She has the most amazing Senseis who happily come in daily to support her, the art, and the students they teach. My husband and I get many compliments from people regarding the amazing children we are raising. We believe one of the reasons our son is so amazing is due to the knowledge of the art of karate combined with the gentle discipline, criticism he has received from the most ethical owner and dojo in the Kansas City/Lee's Summit area. At the tender age of 13, my son is now a 2nd degree black belt. I encourage everyone to come in and visit this dojo. Here your children will be taught "budō" and "bugei". For those with busy schedules, they also offer after school karate that includes picking your child up from school, a snack, homework time, and a karate class.

I decided to send the email and Sensei Travis decided to reply near immediately and ask if I wanted to come in a do a demo class and see how I like everything. I took the information and signed up a week later. After going through the 8 basic classes, I was presented with a choice of a monthly membership or a one time payment to go after a green, brown, or black belt. It was a tough decision because I knew it was a long term commitment but also knew I wanted this to be something I commit to and learn to the best of my ability. Hindsight, this has been one of the best decisions I have made and every class I go to proves just how special this place is. Not only are Travis and the other members some of the best people to learn from, but they teach techniques that one may not find at a cookie cutter martial arts place. This place is the real deal and I encourage anyone thinking of their new place to learn how to defend themselves, give Kenukan a look. This is truly one of the most unique places and I have learned so much even just within 1 year of going.

I came to class and told Master Lee that I could no longer move. He smiled and said: "DAHH-VEE... You Pain TOO EASY!!" Then kicked my rear back onto the mat for daily 4 hour training. That was 31 years ago. TO THIS DAY I can still bend over and place both hands flat on the ground in front of me, touching my face to my knees. Master Lee's training stays with you a lifetime.
