Cheeky, irreverent, subversive and deceitfully honest, this magazine covers (or rather uncovers) aspects of Phoenix that are much less obvious than than the chic trendiness of other magazines and is so much more interesting because of this. Issues can be hard to come by since they only come out with new issues every 3 months but their site claims you can reserve issues and have them sent to you for a nominal fee. I should say that I wrote an article for hoozdo for their first issue. All writing and photography for this magazine is contributed by volunteers for the love of the game and for the love of Phoenix. Bottom line -- great read with a true subversive, big-city edge.

Self-declared as "relentlessly local coverage of Southern Chandler and our neighboring communities", the news features cover community theater, upcoming festivals, local impacts of impending legislation, puff pieces on local businesses, and school sports. With free publications such as these, I often get more out of the ads and hunt down restaurant coupons as an excuse to try new dining establishments (spoken like a true Yelper, ahem, gourmand). This newszine does not disappoint. I found plenty of buy-one-get-one-free offers and other enticing coupons for local eateries and food shops. They also have a respectable restaurant guide derived from the on-line resource www.chandlerlocalbites.com. Now that I'm better informed, I won't have to trek through Hell and Creation to find my nearest dining adventure. But I'm still gonna stick to my budget and save me some money on the meal. You may be able to think of one that covers only our local art, artists, business owners, and developers, but I can't. But there seems to be only one that brings you all of that in one spot. Kontakt is filled with architectural and interior design ideas, personal fashion, news on upcoming and past events, They cover new business developments and what to look forward to in your urban life. They bring together everything that is exciting about the Valley, with insight to who is making it happen, what else they are making happen and generally before any of it has happened. They show no progress to brining in more clients to my business. on top of not performing well at their job they hide the cancellation fees in the contract. when you see the contract it shows nothing about cancellation. you have to click on a link to go to another page then scroll to the bottom. They profit from…read morerepublishing real estate transaction data under the guise of "public record," conveniently ignoring the fact that they are a private business selling this information to subscribers, many of whom are local businesses looking for new leads. Since my home purchase, I have been bombarded with solicitors at my door, at least in part thanks to PBJ handing out my information like a free sample. When I contacted them to request removal, I received an arrogant response from their Editor-in-Chief stating verbatim "we do not need any type of permission whatsoever in order to publish this data, nor do we remove it from the database". In other words, they are fully aware of what they're doing and simply don't care. Make no mistake, this is data brokering under the disguise of journalism. They exploit homebuyers' personal information for profit, offering no way to opt out. Their refusal to even entertain the idea of consumer choice speaks volumes about their ethics (or lack thereof). Shady business practices, zero accountability, and a complete disregard for privacy. Avoid this publication at all costs.
