I am usually not in this area a lot, but my daughter & I wanted to go check out this bookstore for…read moresome used books so we took the drive down. When we arrived, I realized I remembered this spot from when I was a kid, I just hadn't been back since I was younger. This spot is absolutely STUFFED with books, comic books, VHS tapes and more. You could spend quite a long time wandering around looking at all of the books they have to offer. It can be slightly overwhelming especially if you are looking for something specific as there wasn't really any clear guidance on where to find certain sections. We still had a lot of fun though wandering around and seeing what we could find. If you are looking for the prices, they are written in pencil on the inside of the books. You can find a mixture of mostly used books along with some new books. They have a cute shop cat that you can sometimes spot wandering around, or asleep at the front. The woman who was working the register the day we visited was friendly! They also had a cart out-front with a number of books that were free to grab. There is plenty of parking out-front.

Once I was got to the store, I had to explore. I think that if one were to regularly visit Books, he/she would find some rare editions and other gems. Also, they had what looked like reproductions of banned book announcements posted around the store: all were of classic novels that we can't imagine not having access to as students. (See photos: Charlotte's Web, Huck Finn, Fahrenheit 451...) They were quite entertaining, in a disturbing way. They had the effect of making me feel so grateful that past efforts of censorship in the US had failed. In 2024, this is still a real threat. Tiny stores like this one are real treasures. Let's keep them in business.

I've visited a couple times now, but on my most recent visit, I attended one of their ticketed flower bouquet making events. You can find a wide range of artsy book-related or flower-related events on their website. For this class, it was learning how to make a spiral bouquet. It was so fun learning this technique and leaving with a a bouquet that I had designed! Also, the owner is super kind and her patience and help with me while I made my bouquet was greatly appreciated. Can't wait to try another class!

I was immediately greeted by a young friendly woman at the front who left me to peruse the store. There's a selection of books for everyone, with sections for various genres housed on the east wall and within their bookcases and tables. I love the idea of a blind date with a book, and they had no shortage of options! There's a small area containing tees and other merch and, even tho I'm not a big sci-fi fan, I loved the setup they had for the genre! What I hadn't anticipated was the section that had the Sweet Valley Twins books! The nostalgia was HEAVY let me tell you! :) Regardless of how small the store seemed, they do an amazing job of packing in the books and I was impressed that there's literally every type of genre you could want there. Adding to the great vibes are the comfy sitting areas with plush seating, an old typewriter you can crank out 'hellos' to future visitors on, and plants and decor that add charm to some mid century modern furniture. What makes this place so unique though is the assortment of fresh flowers in the back and the flower workshops they hold each week. I haven't gone to one yet, but I plan on it, they look really cool! I highly recommend Wijaya House to any book lover, but especially those that prefer the locally owned to the big box store. I'm planning my next visit soon. :)

If you're a fan of buttons, stickers, etc., I'm sure you'll find your fandom represented here. I appreciated that they sold many used books as well as local, indie authors. The prices were decent. Some items were on the more expensive side, but that can come with bookish wallets, backpacks, etc. Growing up not far from here and going to downtown with my family during my childhood, I'm just super happy to see more and new businesses pop up. The shop is located at the very end of a little hidden alley in Downtown Mesa. If you know where Novel Ice Cream and Organic Bean Cafe is, it's right in that alley filled with foliage :) The bookstore was filled with eager readers on grand opening day! It is tiny, but they have a variety of books ranging from children's books, teen fiction, to romance, to sci-fi fantasy, and more. There are small decor pieces that are so unique and book-focused. If you're looking for a cozy mom-and-pop shop you'd read about in a romance book, this is it! :)

They have a huge selection of comic books and collectibles. Honestly, just let a fan loose in there and come back and pick them up after an hour so they have time to browse. It's always held Valentine's weekend so I'll never forget when to anticipate it. I decided to come around 6ish AM, and the doors open at 8 AM on Sunday. If you decide to wait early before doors open, keep in mind they don't open their indoor restrooms to the public. I did need to use the restroom while I was in line and you only have access to port-a-potties that don't have sinks to wash your hands. It wasn't very sanitary and the smell inside was putrid. I'm hoping there's a way we can use the indoor bathrooms next time. Coming in to the event, you're given a map so you don't get lost, there's a host on the mic that walks you through the process, and there are volunteers everywhere who can help you find what you're looking for and get checked out! I was blown away by all the genres they were carrying. I thought for an event like this I'd have to come super early but even with the place packed it was still breathable. I was completely shocked that the price of all the books I got came to only $30. I believe Sundays, books are half-price when they're already cheap. If I were to go to a Barnes and Noble, I would've only been able to get about 2-3 books with that price. I believe I got at least 20 books. What an amazing way to support the community while getting books at the lowest you'll probably ever be able to snag them at.
