What…read morearrived were two completely different fish--large, highly aggressive Pao puffers, apparently Pao abei and/or Pao cochinchinensis. These aren't species that could reasonably be confused in terms of size, temperament, or care requirements. This created an immediate problem. Irrubesco are small puffers that I had appropriate housing prepared for. The fish I received were roughly 3-4 inches long and belong to a group notorious for extreme aggression, requiring secure individual housing. I had to improvise emergency setups to keep them separated from each other and from my other fish while figuring out what they actually were. The most disappointing part was the response afterward--or lack of one. I contacted Monster Aquarium about the misidentification and sent photographs of the fish. I never received a response or any attempt to resolve the situation. Fortunately, a knowledgeable local aquarium store was willing to take both puffers, and they are now safely in experienced hands. But I had to solve a problem that never should have been mine in the first place. Fish identification matters, particularly with puffers. Sending someone a potentially extremely aggressive Pao in place of a small Carinotetraodon isn't just getting an order wrong; it can put the fish, the customer's existing livestock, and potentially the aquarist at risk. I understand that mistakes happen in the aquarium trade, especially with species that can be difficult to identify. What makes this a bad experience for me is that after a very consequential mistake, the seller simply did not respond.

It's a work of art, and now the most beautiful piece of furniture in my home! My cichlids were previously in a 20 gal and obviously deserved an upgrade to a 55gal tank. Chris consulted with me to build a custom table that houses the new 55 gal on top, with the 20 gal tank and a storage cabinet on the bottom. He even went so far as to take note of the other furniture in my room, and incorporate similar elements to match it perfectly, all the way down to the stain. My fish are SO happy in their new home that they immediately bred and I now have 8 fry living their best life too! I have heard that trying to adopt a cat in NYC can sometimes be a trying, time consuming and overall unpleasant experience, but my experience here was the total opposite. I spoke to someone nice on the phone to get details about the cats they had, and they offered to hold a female kitten who sounded perfect until I was able to come in. Well, perfect she was and in less than an hour they had all my paperwork processed, called my references, approved my application, went over her medical records with me, and recommended a great food from their pet store to me. Not to mention that she is the sweetest little lovebug anyone could imagine and has been a total joy- used the litterbox from day one, gets along with my dog, only scratches her scratching post, I could go on for days! While in the store I also took a peek at all the exotic animals they had- I can honestly say I never thought I would see a tortoise the size of a dog just freely roaming around a pet store in Brooklyn! They also had snakes, iguanas, lizards, guinea pigs, hamsters, and parakeets (due to legalities regarding the keeping of exotics in city limits, certain types of animals are only available with proof of address outside of NYC). They are the only place that I've come across in NYC that offers its (excellent) rescue services to these cast off exotic animals and it's wonderful to see a place committed to helping every homeless animal that needs help- not just the ones that are cute and fluffy and easy to find homes for.
