I used to get friends to babysit for me, but after adopting an "escape artist" I decided it was time to look at somewhere more professional and secure. I do a lot of volunteering in the rescue world and have come upon many kennels which were fine, but just weren't that something special I wanted for my own dogs.
A friend had mentioned Southbark and I knew that she was likely as picky as I was, so I called them up and grilled the owner, and then went out for a tour. Afterwards I learned that my cousin (who doesn't know my friend) also sends her dogs to Southbark. Two unrelated recommendations for the same place, a small, not so well known kennel, must say something.
In these days of open concept kennels, I am happy that Southbark is not. Open concept may be fine for a play day, but I think the idea is too overwhelming for dogs who are staying for several days. I wouldn't stay in a hotel where all the guests slept in the ballroom, why should my dogs?
The kennels are large and have indoor / outdoor space. My two dogs are welcome to share a kennel and I can send along beds and crates to personalize their space. Each day the yard is locked up and the dogs get to go outside to run and play with each other. When play time I done, they can go back into their own "room" and relax.
Finally, one thing I recently learned is that some kennels strongly encourage you to use their brand of food. I was shocked to learn this is a thing, so another thing I appreciate about Southbark is that they let you bring your dog's own food. read more
