The Y has not recovered from Covid. I finally gave up on asking for machines in working order, usable software and if I have a problem, it should be resolved without too much effort. On a recent Saturday I realized the Southdale Y had not recovered from Covid, it was time to end a 20+ year relationship Of the treadmills, 2 were of 20 were tagged as needed repairs and two others should have been out. The software change from last summer is missing functionality that had been there prior, not kinks functionality, it just doesn't work Multiple request for assistance get different answers, I think my count was at 4 when I realized this was not worth it. Talk to a trainer, talk to the help desk, not our problem, send an email to this address. I found it was time of a change and the Southdale Y didn't seem willing to. Not worth the cost, spend more for Lifetime or less at the multiple alternatives. read more

I am so very happy this Y isn't close to my home..but this isn't my idea of what the YMCA represents. Tons of privileged Mr. & Mrs. Karens running around. Make sure to get out of their way! Love the Mr. Karen Dude who has his vehicle parked in the front of the door. Waiting for kids? Hmmm...maybe. I love the southdale YMCA! I've only had good experiences here. The machines are all clean and new, and the staff are also very friendly. My only issue is that when a machine does break, it seems to take a long time for them to repair it. One of the stair masters has been faulty ever since I started working out here, and some treadmills have been broken for a week or so as well. But I also understand that getting repairs is tough in today's climate so I give it to them. Plus, the Y has an awesome buddy deal where you can get a membership for half off if you sign up with someone else! So I'm getting such a sweet deal for good machines, location, and service. I couldn't find any other gym with remotely as good of a deal or options for workouts. With this membership I can go to group fitness, workout anytime, use the locker room, pool, sauna... The list goes on. I'd never be able to afford the gym without this deal, so I have nothing but good words to share about the Y. read more

Many years ago my wife and I were members of the Southdale Y as our children were young and we made extensive use of the facilities- particularly the pool. As our kids grew we eventually stopped going and as we both worked at the University of Minnesota we used their excellent facilities since we were both on campus. With the pandemic we simply stopped going to the gym but recently we both felt the need to try and get in shape and as we are no longer at the U we started looking around for a facility near our home. I looked at the Yelp reviews of the for profit gyms near us and was put off by what I read so we looked at the Y again. We recently rejoined and are very pleased. The staff is courteous, Drew was particularly helpful, and the facilities are well maintained. There are a lot of group fitness classes which we like. Most of the clientele are either older or families with young children so this might not be for younger people. So far we have been quite pleased. read more

Politically correct staff allows people to use the pool and equipment wearing yards of fabric. Yet the scream at me for an untied shoe lace on the tread mill. The cost of the membership is high for a non-profit. One can find a better gym that applies membership rules equally. There are no amities, except for child care, and that's debatable. My son got lice at this gym during summer camp. We were not notified that lice was going around until it was, too late. To get rid of the lice was a nightmare. When I confronted the child care about this, they shrugged their shoulders and told me this was typical when there's lots of kids. Oh really? Like all gyms it's horribly crowded from January 1-February 14. Waiting for machines during all times of the year is very problematic. Frequently I didn't complete a workout because there was a line for a machine. Between the wait time for equipment, the head lice,the dirty pool and possibly having to pull someone out of a piece of equipment because of their clothing, we left. read more

I just became a member last month when they had a special of a $1 joining fee. The group classes are fun. I've been able to try the rock climbing in the gym a couple times. The pool is pretty nice with special lanes for people doing laps as opposed to a more recreational section. The locker rooms are spacious and clean. There are some lockers outside the locker rooms to be more convenient with keys you can safety pin on yourself if you don't need to change and don't require that much locker space. There's ample space for cardio machines and weight equipment. People generally seem to use wet wipes to sanitize equipment after they are done. The lot in the front seems to fill up easily but there's overflow parking in the back. read more

I was at the Edina YMCA today, where signs proclaim that masks are required except during "vigorous exercise." In the large room that holds equipment, I noticed over a dozen people chatting, halfheartedly pulling on weights, slowly cycling, or simply walking around with no masks on. One face-uncovered guy was having a long, loud conversation with his (masked) personal trainer. Employees were present, ignoring the situation. The YMCA is not a safe place for members concerned about spreading Covid-19. read more

This Y is fantastic! My wife and I decided to head out on New Year's Day to the Y rather than sit around and watch a movie. (We did that later, Get Smart, not bad) The Southdale Y has about 20 cross trainer machines, which I love going on for 45 minutes because you can get through a good Entertainment Weekly or Sports Illustrated in about that time. The workers at the desk are always fantastic and helpful. They have a huge free weight room and a ton of treadmills. There is also a nice pool and lots of TVs in the main workout room. I also noticed about 20 bikes to ride on and a whole fitlinxx regimine. The locker room seems a little outdated, but if it like the one downtown, maybe they will ramp that up. If I remember right, there is a Southdale YMCA renovation coming soon. read more

I do not recommend going to this gym for serious gym goers. I was deadlifting minding my own business and they kicked me out.

This generally is a nice ymca, however they need to Crack down on minors being in the weight room. When there are kids running back and forth playing tag when people that are there having a serious workout it's just a call of disaster. For example, there was a group of under age Somali kids, none of which had age appropriate wrist bands. . . the one trying to lift the empty bench press bar couldn't handle the weight of the bar causing it to land on his neck. He screamed and no one was there for him except me. After living the bar off of his neck he then crapped his pants and ran down to the men's locker room where I had my brand new $300 Eddie Bauer jacket hanging in one of the first lockers. The little Somali kid removed said pair of crapped in undergarments and decided to ditch them in the hood of my brand new jacket. After realizing what had happened, I found the stupid kid and screamed at him and his dad who knew 3 words of English told me to f off. So if you like poopy hooded high quality jackets and foreign people that let their kids run around like the weight room is a jungle gym this is the gym for you. read more

I love the Southdale YMCA! It's all about fitness for everyone! Have you ever joined a gym where you felt like you had to work out before you ever step into the place? Have you looked at the chic workout gear of the other members and felt like a slob in your old t-shirt and shorts? You shouldn't have to feel that way! Your time in the gym is all about you! The Y is all about helping you reach your goals and helping the community! The facility is a little outdated. That is the only reason I'm giving them four stars instead of five. The people there are amazing! They have a knowledgeable, friendly, accessible staff that is ready to help you. This past year I ran my first marathon with help from PJ, a personal trainer there. And get this... he helped me for free! We met twice for a hour each time and he never charged me a cent. Wow! Check out the group fitness classes! They are a great way to stay motivated and they are offered all day long! I can't say enough about how much I love the YMCA! If you are looking to help your community and become a stronger person both mentally and physically the YMCA is the place for you! read more

My wife an d I have been YMCA members for a year now, though we took the summer off. We lived through the renovation and have never been members at any other gym so we don't have anything to compare it to. We don't need to compare it to anything. The people are really nice, it's close to our house and for a stay at home dad like me it's a blessing. They watch your kids while you work out. The child care staff is always engaging my children and my kids don't want to leave most of the time. With a membership, you also get discounts on swimming lessons. We have yet to try it, but both the leisure and lap pool are nice. Lots of classes are available and the instructors are always welcoming to people new to the classes. Good place. I'm here at least 5 times a week. My kids love the child care areas and, overall, I'm super happy with the facilities. We've taken the free group classes, swim lessons and the group training classes (that you pay for) and have only had positive experiences. The machines are kept in good condition and everything is clean and well laid out. My one gripe? The fact that there are kids hanging out and running around everywhere. Like I said, I have kids and I get it, sometimes they suck, but the child care is free and literally takes two minutes to check in to. Some of these kids are too old for that area, fine, so the Y allows them to use the machines as long as they are trained on them and get a wristband. The problem? You rarely see the kids who are using the machines wearing those wristbands. I've seen these kids throwing around balance balls, using the TRX and other circuit equiptment like it's a jungle gym and have had to dodge them as they run full speed through the place. Part of this is on the parents, of course, but I can count on two fingers the number of times I've actually seen a Y employee address the problem with the kid(s). I really wish they would crack down on this and address the issue as it's creating an unsafe environment for everyone. read more

Over the years, our family has used the workout area, leisure pool, lap pool, personal training, group exercise classes (paid and free), kids' care, kids' swimming lessons, kids' summer programs, kids' sports, and probably everything else they offer. Best place for a good workout I've found in the Twin Cities. It has some problems, nothing that can't be fixed, and the staff seems willing to work on them if you mention it. I'm a senior, decent shape, there are a lot of me-types here, they seem to all know each other. And except for the Long Haired Naked Guy in the locker room who strolls around for hours starting up conversations with any other naked guys who will listen (then lies down on the carpet and stretches), and the Singing Guy who apparently thinks he missed his calling and wants everybody to know he could have been a Las Vegas lounge singer, the place is fine. The hot tub tends to fill up with large older folks, and when the Somali women come in fully dressed and step in I feel like I'm sitting in someone's laundry tub, so I make a quick exit. But the trainers and staff are all friendly and competent, they keep the locker room clean and disinfected, they update the machines, and the pool is terrific---you can get plenty of laps in in the early afternoon especially. The weights are plentiful, enough space to workout, plenty of screens to distract you from the sweaty business of staying fit. A good gym, lots of families, competitive swimming events, a lively place, a reasonable price. What's not to like? (OK, the Naked Guy and the Singing Guy---REALLY annoying) read more

Its fun to stay there, because they have everything, for you men to enjoy and you can hang out with all the boys. I'm short on my dough, so i go to the ymca and find many ways to have a good time, it is fun to stay at the ymca. Had an absolutely terrible experience. We were taking our daughter here for swim lessons and the lady in charge told us to talk to someone about a 5 day pass so we could get her acquainted with the pool. I got taken into a room with a sales person (I can't remember, but I think his name was Karl?) where he didn't even give me the option of the 5-day pass and pressured me into getting a membership because the first month was free. I even told him we were looking into a different gym, that we were only at the Y for swim lessons. He told me I would be able to call him and cancel, so I tried and never got ahold of him. I tried calling someone else and they would not let me cancel over the phone, so I ended up having to pay for a month's membership simply because I was too busy to make it in to cancel a membership I never used because I never wanted it in the first place. I'm extremely displeased with the pushy salesperson who took advantage of my passiveness and profited off my inability to come in to cancel. Not to mention how extremely rude the lady at the front desk was when I cancelled. I would never recommend this place. We go to LA fitness, it is cheaper, cleaner, and way friendlier. read more

I have lived within 3 blocks of the Y for 15 years. During this time I've vascillated between this Y and the LA Fitness (2 blks from my home). No, I don't like the kid noise, there's more "senior sneakers" hanging out, and there's no protein shake bar. What I do like is the absence of mumbles of another theft in the locker room, as at the LA. The women's locker room, doesn't smell like b.o. at 11 a.m. The staff are real employees, not there to jump on me when I hit the door to sign up for an outrageously expensive trainer. A couple trainers have degrees, the others have certifications. I imagine the LA Fitness trainers have credentials, hopefully more than their personal "buff" achievements. If you're a lap swimmer, the Y by far surpasses the minimal depth & length of the LA pool. There's sitting areas, so if after your workout you want to get a beverage from the machine, or a free cup of "ok" coffee or tea. LA's environment is totally the opposite, 2 or 3 chairs in the lobby. Overall, the Y offers a wide range of classes throughout the day and evening. The best thing, they serve the neighborhood, the kids next door with programs, where for a couple of hours take them "away". No, I don't work for the Y, I'm a proponent of a place to exercise and my membership fee contributes to more than someone's "bottom line, market shares or profit margins". Not that a nonprofit is exempt from budget & market share concerns, but they exist for the common good. Whatever inconveniences exist, it's a win-win for the Edina/Richfield area, the affluent , and definitely for the very non-affluent. read more

This Y can get pretty busy during the weeknight after-work hours, and the parking lot in front can get crowded, BUT there is a "secret" parking lot out back, so I have never been without a place to park. As most YMCAs go, the vibe is laid-back and casual, kid-friendly, and you don't need fancy workout clothes to go here. Most of the members are older folks or families with small children. The group fitness instructors are great. Minda O's Body Flow class is the best! The front desk staff is friendly and helpful, too, and when I had to cancel my membership they made it very simple, which I appreciate. You do have to come in-person to sign a cancellation form. The only cons are that you can't use the studios to workout on your own, the pool can get really crowded both in the morning (7-9am) and the early evening (4-8pm) hours, and recently there have been some members who talk very loudly in the women's locker room and in the showers (usually occurs weeknights between 5-7pm), which is really disrespectful and downgrades the quality of experience at the gym. The locker room doesn't smell as nice as it used to, either. Other than those details, if you are looking for a family-friendly gym or a gym where you don't need to be a fitness fanatic, this YMCA is all right. read more

The management needs improvement. The fact that more often than not the lifeguard doesn't show up for his/her shift (thus members are not allowed to swim) is unacceptable. Off the top of my head, I can think of five ways to improve that situation. Simply, offering an apology is not one of them. read more
