Worst clinic I've dealt with. I came here to follow my Dr. who recently moved to this clinic and though I love him and his nurse I HATE doing anything with the clinic. Getting ahold of anyone for any reason is almost impossible, they are rude, been over 6 months no one can get me into the patient portal. It is a mess. 10/10 do not recommend. read more

For the second time in a year I have had tremendous difficulty getting prescriptions sent to the pharmacy in a timely manner. I don't know if the nurses are inept or just don't care. I put a request on the portal (recommended as the fastest way) saying I had 4 days of pain medicine remaining. Today, 5 days later, the prescription was sent to the pharmacy, a full 22 hours after I was informed that it was printed and waiting for the doctor's signature. I skipped a couple of doses just so I could get to the 5th day. Because the pharmacy just got it and are closed for lunch from 1:30 to 2, I have missed the opportunity to go on a trip I had been looking forward to for a good while. There just seems to be no sense of urgency or concern for the patient's wellbeing. I am seriously considering changing to another practice. read more

I saw a DO here for 4 years. I was not going to post a review but since I have been able to find a PCP who cares, listens and is a competent Doctor...I felt the need to try & help others not have to endure what I did because it actually made me worse instead of better. I am now seeing Dr. Patrick Whitney and not only has my level of care improved immensely, his nurses and assistants are just as focused on you as he is. I could never get blood test results from So. Clinic---even though I was set up on their portal- because it was not automatic, like with Health West. But it was due to their inability to set it up. I had to personally request it. I was diligent in reporting in the portal ( I had been accused of not using this method of communication- because nurses are busy & I evidently "did not understand" what that meant. Just as a matter of reference, I have a HR Management background of interviewing & hiring hundreds of people and of managing staffs of hundreds of employees. This DO does not pay attention, does not 'listen' , and is too busy to care about what your problems are- she also has problems focusing. I will not go into detail, but if you are looking for a medical provider to take care of multi health issues and take the time to refer you out to the appropriate specialized physician, then you will not find that here. You will also not find "communication", refills called in, OR the ability to leave a message that will be answered. The other problem is you can not reach a doctor OR their nurse without leaving a voice mail and it is not returned. The last time I saw this DO, I had suffered 2 TIA's. I was recovering from them and not functioning 100% mentally- she knew this (I was not able to drive for 4 months because of memory problems) I saw her Jan 2023 for a 2mo. evaluation? She had been seeing me for 4 yrs. and prescribing controlled scripts for diagnosed conditions. During this appt. she decided I needed to sign a medical substance contract (like an employee) She asks me " Which 'drug' do you want to keep bc I am not going to give you but one. I will replace it with (a drug that does not work for me) note: these prescriptions have been prescribed to me since the 80's for a diagnosed medical reason and were issued on an as needed basis. NEVER abused. However, during this last visit, she came very close to accusing me of abusing prescriptions. The medical record (scribed by her personnel) in my portal was NOT MINE. I sent them messages in the portal to correct it but it was not done. I brought all of these things to her attention . I signed the agreement because the whole thing was ridiculous & I knew I was going to find someone else. I posted a long and detailed account of my appointment with her on my portal. I received a certified mail letter 2 weeks later informing me I no longer could use the portal, and NONE of the doctors at Southern Clinic would see me. I am SO MUCH BETTER now than I ever was there....both mentally and physically. They also have a 15 min. wait time for your appt. & if you are late they make you reschedule. I was 8 min. late, called ahead & after getting upset with having to reschedule, the office person called & got it "approved for me to stay! In all the times I saw this DO she was always 1.5 hours late for my appointment. There are qualified doctors out there that care and will help you. Dr. Whitney is one of them. read more

I am being treated for diabetes by Dr Stokes. On my last visit (3 weeks ago) blood test showed that my blood sugar reading was VERY high. He prescribed a new medication for me to help get it down to acceptable levels. A couple other prescriptions were prescribed for things resulting from the high BS levels. I went to pick up my scripts and there was a problem with the diabetes medication. It required a pre-authorization from my insurance. Also, one of the medications was not called in at all. To shorten this long story up a bit. I have been calling the insurance company, Southern Clinic, and the pharmacy almost daily. Both the insurance company & the pharmacy have been very helpful giving me all the info I needed to get my medicine. If you call the Dr's office you can't even talk to his nurse. You can only leave a message which NEVER gets you anywhere. I even went there & waited for an hour and was told the nurse is too busy to talk to me. Even the pharmacy & the ins. Co. called them on my behalf. THREE WEEKS LATER I am now still waiting for some kind of medicine, any medicine, that will lower my blood sugar as it is at dangerous levels. I still don't have the secondary prescription that I needed. THEY ARE SERIOUSLY THE MOST UNRESPONSIVE DR'S OFFICE I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. If you are considering them, I'd suggest you RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION. read more

I have been a patient at Southern Clinic now for many years - was recommended here by a friend ... Dr. Tavarez is my doctor (and my friend's also). I am very pleased with Dr. Tavarez and with the Clinic in general. They are easy to get in for an appointment - can make a quicker nurse practitioner appt. sometimes, for many issues. They are friendly and professional, and have the blood-drawing lab and many other diagnostic tools (x-ray, bone density, etc.) right there - I think in association with SE Health. I have used the messaging with their "Patient Portal" several times, and always get a pretty quick response. My husband also was a patient here for awhile, with another doctor, and he was less pleased - switched back to his original doctor, elsewhere - so, perhaps not all the doctors are 5-star, but I am very satisfied with my choice and highly recommend this facility. read more

Southern Clinic was my first choice upon moving to Alabama. Being handicap isn't easy. However fighting tooth and nail for proper care, medication refills and forms to be completed has been an uphill battle. Personally, it just doesn't sit right with me. I'm humble but sad regarding the battles to receive care. read more

John Calhoun is the most unprofessional dr. Ive ever been to in my life! Apparently Big Pharma has him in their pocketas he refuses to subscribe any medication other than the one type that I couldn't tolerate even though my Insurance pays for it. I'm currently taking the corrupt T3 medicine that I needed now thanks to a wonderful professional dr. at American Family Care! Thank God I walked out and seen another dr. because Calhoun was not doing required blood work while I was taking a serious arthritis medication and my new dr. Ran labs and discovered my kidneys were being damaged and my though is by the Anti inflammatory drug he had me on all while never once doing labs or blood work! Be aware! read more

My Primary Health Care Provider is a nurse practitioner, Nancy Turnham, CRNP and she is amazing. She is dedicated, compassionate and extremely knowledgeable. I have been her patient for about 12 years now and have the greatest confidence in her ability to provide the best medical care to me. I prefer to see nurse practitioners because they see the whole patient and treat the whole patient. They don't just see the person in room 8 with arthritis or heart disease. They see patients as people with medical problems that will ultimately impact their entire person. This impact can be on their social life, financial aspect of life, religious and dietary. I cannot stress enough how much I appreciate her for being the best PCP that a patient could have. At times, she is unavailable and I will see one of the other NPs who are also fabulous. There are times when I must see one of the physicians, and am also happy with the care provided, but I do feel rushed a bit and recognize that only the problem at hand is of concern to them, not the far reaching implications on my life that the problem can and will have. Overall, I would recommend this medical practice to anyone, but would strongly encourage having a nurse practitioner as your primary care provider. read more
