    Chicken N' Waffles

We came super later but still had a great dinner. I got the chicken and waffles which I enjoyed. They do put jalapeños on so if you can't do spice I would ask for them on the side...I learned my lesson. Chicken is also on the bone just fyi. Overall solid dinner and a good addition to Assembly Row!

I 100% know that the restaurant is having a bad day. Although they are known for their chicken and waffles, tried the restaurant out without any prior information/reviews. The chicken sandwich was good if it had chicken in it. I mostly got breading and a really thin layer of chicken. The slaw and dressing were tasty. The country fried streak was also mostly breading. The mash potatoes and green beans were a bit bland. The staff were extremely nice and the restaurant was lively. I saw my food was prepped and stood out for a while before it got served. I am open to going again in the future. Hopefully southern kin cookhouse just had a bad day.

Food is ok. Service is ok. The prices seem fair for the "just ok" food. I feel like this place used to be better. I can't say that the service is great, either. The place is clean.

Came in with a reservation at 6 on a Saturday evening. We were seated promptly and put in our drink orders. Service was attentive. Interior was fairly nondescript, mostly just a bar and an open view in to the kitchen. The food had flavor and I definitely enjoyed the shrimp & grits. The chicken & waffles with the fresno maple syrup and hot sauce were a standout. The Nashville hot wings were a little over-seasoned, but still respectable. The key lime and buttermilk pies were enjoyable desserts. Only reason I dinged it a star is a nitpick of not staggering the entrees and appetizers. All of our food came out basically at once which made eating at a tiny table for two fairly challenging. Worth giving it a try if you're in the area and want southern food specifically.

Oh how the mighty have fallen. Ive had a special relationship with Southern Kin. Not only have I been coming since the beginning, when assembly row was only a fraction of what it is today, but my reviews for Southern Kim brought me recognition I had never experienced before in my early days of writing reviews. The southern cuisine landscape in the area was something like a culinary desert at the time. Along came Southern Kin with its big, bright, vibrant space. I used to bring friends and family here! A menu filled with southern favorites, none better than the chicken and waffles and the buttery biscuit. Over the years, things have seem to deteriorate. By not so much that I didn't go back. Others have given up but I always gave it another chance. 7 years later, I must sadly walk away. The latest experience was so far from quality, it's almost unbelievable. A southern fried chicken with no crispy breading. For the first time in my entire life, I asked for a new plate of food. A very similar piece of chicken was delivered on the second go round. Is southern friend chicken no longer crispy? A waffle that is as flimsy as a price of paper. A biscuit that has absolutely no crumbly quality, almost resemble a dinner roll. Another first? After almost 700 reviews, having to finally update 1 because the original no longer is applicable. It pains me to say, not only is the Southern Kin of old no more, but I can't even say it's of decent quality. Until things change, look elsewhere.

Pork chop 4/5 Flavorful and moist. A nice sear on the outside with a flavorful butter. The sweet potato puree was really nice too! Devilish eggs 5/5 Loved the bacon crunch and jalapeño. The yolk mix was pretty standard and tasty! Crab soup 4/5 Generous with the real crab meat and a great flavor overall. Just a hint too salty. Crab cake 2/5 The crab cake itself was pretty tasteless and kind of soggy. The corn and pepper mix with sauce was decent but didn't pull the dish together. Corn bread 5/5 Soooo good. My favorite dish. Really dense without being too heavy and paired with the butter and jam was perfect! Also dipped in the soup. Chicken n waffles 3/5 Chicken was dry but pretty tasty. The waffle was tasty with some scallions integrated in the batter, but soggy after soaking up the chicken grease. Service 3/5 friendly and pretty standard! Ambiance 4/5 a little dark but a nice atmosphere with music.

I LOVED everything about this place! Atmosphere, service, and food!!!! All AMAZING! Portions are large so be ready to take some home (everything reheats beautifully)! The chicken fried steak was the best I've ever had at any restaurant! The corn has a spicy kick to it which adds to its deliciousness! Mac & cheese was outstanding! I cannot say enough good things!!!! I will be a proud regular!

Came here last weekend because we wanted to grab brunch before a movie at AMC and rushed back this weekend because of how amazing everything was! Devilish eggs are the best I've ever had, low country gravy eggs Benedict will blow your mind and Mac n cheese is perfect to round out the warm southern vibe here.

The restaurant is clean and the ambiance is nice. The service here was wonderful which covers the 2 stars. The downside is that the food was subpar. The signature chicken and waffle--The chicken was crispy but doesn't have enough seasoning. The waffle was soggy but the flavor was good. Since the waffle was already soggy, when you add syrup on it, it's even more soggy. Benedict--The waffle was nice and crispy! But no flavor. I usually order a Benny as a safe choice for brunch but this was honestly the worst Benny I ever had. Ice tea--was perfectly sweet and refreshing. Overall I would not come here again and would not recommend.

Me, Elizabeth, and a group of Friends went to Winter Festival in Boston, it was so so...after that we decided on a place in Somerville called: Southern Kin Cookhouse, it's a Southern Place on Assembly Row, we started with some Homemade Biscuits with Butter and Jam, so soft and so nice to warm up to, for our Mains I got: Chicken and Waffles, it was Spicy and delicious, Elizabeth got Half Rack of KC Ribs with Mac and Cheese and Collard Greens, she liked it, to end the night with a Piece of Peach Pie, everything was delicious and very filling too, definitely going back there again

I was so pleasantly surprised by how good Southern Kin's food was. Went here on a Sunday night close to closing so it was very quiet. It was group of us our waiter handled us with great attention and care. For the table, we ordered biscuits and cornbread, which both came with a side of butter and jam. OMG we're they so good! The biscuits were very moist and the cornbread was very moist a little dense and sweet. The corn bread reminded me more of a bread pudding but it was really really good! I ordered the Southern Fried Plate with mac n cheese and corn. The portion is HUGE, definitely enough to share or to have lots to have later. The chicken was little under seasoned and a little dry for my liking but the breading was very crispy. The mac n cheese was killer!! It was so creamy cheese, well seasoned and garlicky. The corn was the biggest shocker, it was sweet and a little spicy; very very good! I also got a sweet tea, which was sweet enough but still tasted like tea.

This was my first time coming for brunch. The Biscuits and gravy were delicious it was so much food I took half home. The eggs on top weren't even necessary and were a little burnt. The crab cakes Benedict was well presented but the eggs weren't runny at all like you would expect in a Benedict. Over all we will definitely be back service was great. The expresso martini was delicious but if you ran out of martini glasses, wait till you get clean ones or don't serve martinis. The photo included of the 3 finger pour was before I even took a sip I would be embarrassed to serve that even as delicious as it was. The vibes are good and so is the service.

Half chicken with 2 sides, mac n cheese and biscuits.
    Chirag P.

I was kind of questioning the prices at first, then I got the actual food. I got the half chicken with two sides combo (mac n cheese and biscuits). That chicken came fresh out of the frier, and was very well balanced and seasoned. The nashville sauce on the side is also as expected. Biscuits were great on their own, didn't really need the jam and sweet maple butter on the side. Very filling. Definitely coming back.

It was hard to choose one, but I got the A Perfect Circle and it was quite tasty. I'm eager to try some of their other drinks, since the cocktails were definitely the highlight of the experience for me. The dim sum portions were larger than I expected, which meant we ordered way too much food. We had the fried chicken, the cucumber salad, the shrimp, the pork wontons, the soy sauce noodles, the daikon/enoki dish (I forget the name) and the charred broccoli. There wasn't anything I didn't like, but I did find that the flavor profile seemed very similar for many of the items--it seemed like most things were topped with a generous portion of chili oil, scallions, and sesame seeds. I found that this contributed to a fairly uniform flavor experience and was getting a little weary of chili oil after several dishes. The food was also spicier than I anticipated (though to be fair, I have a low spice tolerance, so others might disagree.) I would have enjoyed some less spicy options to balance out our meal. Overall, all the food was good, though, but I think if I come back I'd get fewer items (3-4 would have been plenty for 2 people) and that might also help with everything blurring together. The service was great and our waitstaff was helpful and attentive.

We ordered quickly after perusing the (rather short) menu, most of which was either small plates and cocktails . Our first plate was the hainan chicken arancini. I really liked the contrast in textures between the crispy exterior and the tender chicken and rice mix on the inside. Overall flavour was not bad, too, but I'm not sure that it was exactly good enough to merit the price point of $18. Next was the Xi'an street noodles, which was probably my favourite dish of the meal. The noodles were very well cooked - chewy but not too soft - and I loved the sauce, with the gentle peanut aroma on top of the various spices they used. One comment was that the chilli crisp, which was tasty, was very lacking (in amount) and as a consequence the dish was really not spicy at all. Finally we had the chilli crisp buffalo chicken. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the chicken was boneless (I was expecting something more like chicken wings), which made for very clean eating :) The buffalo sauce was nice (and perhaps a bit spicier than the aforementioned chilli crisp) and the chicken itself was very rich and juicy. Portion size was quite large too and overall I was very happy with this plate. For drinks we ordered the Jaded, which was a fun matcha-themed cocktail (even the marshmallow was matcha-flavoured) and a (spirit-free) cranberry limeade, which was surprisingly refreshing and sweet. Overall a yummy meal, but definitely very expensive. I would be interested to try some more of their cocktails, which seem very creative, but I'm not sure if I would be keen to come again primarily for the food. (To be fair, though, this is often the modus operandi of these restaurants that specialise in small plates and drinks )

It was such a cute hidden area, and I was already excited before we even got to the place. We headed upstairs into the bar, and the vibe was perfect. I ordered the Elly the Elephant and my friend got the Laughing Gull, and we both really enjoyed our drinks. One thing I thought was really nice is that they allow you to grab food from the surrounding restaurants and bring it in to eat there. We didn't end up doing that, but we did get the charcuterie board they had. It came with cheeses, crackers, and some fruit, and you can add meats for $10, which we opted out for. I will say I was a little disappointed by the fruit portion. The menu mentioned fresh fruit, so I expected more than three thin orange slices and one sliced strawberry. HOWEVER, when I asked for more strawberries, our waiter kindly brought out a whole bowl for me, which I really appreciated. We stayed for about two hours, and as the night went on the place definitely got more crowded, so we headed out. Overall, this is such a cute and cozy cocktail bar.
