I enjoyed the first experience of Southern Rep's permanent home that's in progress of settling. The production, "A Doll's House Part 2" was funny and poignant, pitting the pros and cons of marriage versus feminist independence in alternating bouts of semi comical debate. The housemaid character was my favorite with blunt and biting comic timing. I will be back to see another performance and the development of this new space. read more

The theater is located on the 3rd floor of Canal Place. Food and drink offerings include wine, spirits and tasty snacks from Whole Foods. The prices are quite reasonable and the fare is pretty tasty in a pinch. You can only bring drinks inside the theater-proper. So, eat your fare at their high top tables and then come on in! The theater is modest but serves its purpose. It appears to hold about 150 comfortably. The chairs remind me of of seating from a government office in the 80's. The chairs are quite worn, with plush cushions, burnt orange fabric with wood construction. The set is humble but workable. I like this well-used, comfy theater. read more

Locate on the third floor of the Canal Place mall, it is a convenient place to catch a variety of great local entertainment. So undecided on this review. The Southern Rep moved locations to Elysian Fields. No longer on Canal. We were herded around only to find our seats J1 and J2 were not even next to each other, which they were on the seat map when we spent $60 on tix. I really felt scammed. Bad neighborhood, bad seats, poor management. On the flip side, the play and actors were amazing. Blanche in a Streetcar named Desire was amazing. Drinks at the venue were affordable. Beer, wine and special cocktails. tamales were available for $2 each. read more

Great actors + odd stage + local Theatre = great night out Went here for the first time this past weekend. I was very impressed by the acting and level of professionalism. I wasn't thrilled about the stage set up as there really is no front. They are moving though so I'm hopeful that will be fixed in their next location. Such a fan of their new space! They have a bar, black box theatre, and provide more than just play performances. Their events cover every age range and market segment in New Orleans. Really happy to see them in that neighborhood and in that space, doing such a great job so far. Attended A Doll's House Part II, and loved every minute of the show. Can't wait to attend their next performance. They have young professional discount tickets to performances! Also attended the children's Halloween story time, and had a blast (food truck deliciousness, great story telling, and pumpkin carving!). As far as the new theatre space is concerned: there is an outdoor area where they plan to have events in good weather. The neighborhood has other great, locally owned shops and restaurants within walking distance. Parking is off street, but free - which isn't bad. They do have a very small parking lot connected to the theatre, but there's rarely space to park there. The building used to be a church in case you're surprised by the look of the building; I love that they're renovated while paying respect to the original building. There is no "box office". You enter through the two main front doors and there is a table with staff members handling tickets/sales. That opens in a nice, large lobby area with comfy seating and a bar. The bar has a small selection of drinks and wine. Within the theatre itself there were no bad seats; stadium/riser style seating, though that might change for different shows since it's a true black box. Easily handicap accessible with ramps to the front doors, ramps into the theatre and front row/accessible seating. read more

When I first heard about the Southern Rep, I wasn't expecting it to be located at the Shops at Canal Place...but that's where it is! Third floor, across from the movie theater, to be exact. And they validate parking! (Other great option is the Canal street car). After you purchase or collect your will call tickets, they have a little lobby and bar that sells drinks and snacks from Whole Foods. They sell water bottles for $1, which you can hardly find anywhere nowadays, so right away that should tell you that this place is about quality and not ripping you off for your money! Southern Rep is a theater tucked comfortably inside Canal Place. The theater is small, cozy and comfortable. The parking is easy, you get validated and the shows are quite interesting. Southern Rep also has Le Chat Noir in the French Quarter, but I prefer to get my parking validated. read more

Tiny little theater in a mall. For my birthday I wanted to see "Spring Awakening" for the 24th time. I have seen it on Broadway 23 times with Lea Michele & Jonathan Groff so my expectations were higher than normal.... The venue was modest, and the actors were local, but they blew me away. Talent I saw deserve some awesome kudos for nailing a great play. They have a cute little bar, and some snacks from whole foods. You CAN take your drink into the theater. My understanding is that the cast are all volunteers, so you should tip before you leave, because their cast is really outstanding. They give their all. read more

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE BY TENNESSEE WILLIAMS The play presented by the Southern Rep Theatre under the direction of Jason Kirkpatrick I have waited a very long time to be able to absorb this play live and in New Orleans. The time came and I waited patiently and ardently for the date on my tickets. My friends, this was one fantastic and thought provoking adult drama. There is no equal to a well done live performance of an award winning play. The movie version, which I have seen and enjoyed quite a number of times, does not rise to the level of performance of this live drama on stage. Not being a theatre critic or any kind of expert I must say it was a definite five star presentation for me. Each actor played his or her role in a flawless manner. Stanley Kowalski (Michael A. Santos) could be understood and disliked at the same time. Stella Kowalski (Ashley Ricord) is the adoring wife with child. Sexually attracted to Stanley in a big way, knowledgeable of his faults, but quite willing to live her life only accepting the positive. Blanche Dubois (Aimée Hayes) is in La La Land. The portrayal of this woman who lives outside reality comes across so well in this performance. And it is equal to if not better than the performance in the movie version. And because plays today are in a more open society they can tell the story with more time than a movie and with a deeper character development. Harold Mitchell (Mike Harkins) is more developed in the play. We really get to know him better and he is so likeable. Other performers acted in their respective rolls without any flaws that I would notice. You do not leave the theatre happy and joyful after this production of this great work. But you do leave entertained and glad you made the effort to attend. Other than the play itself the Southern Rep is temporarily making do in a dilapidated building with no internal plumbing. That is not nice for there are neither bathrooms nor air conditioning. The old building did add to the overall ambiance of this play however. Parking was an issue for the French Quarter Fest is happening. Did luck out with street parking and that was nice. They served Skyy Vodka doubles for $10.00 and that helped. Not a bad price considering the venue. And there was only one poster left on the night I was there and luckily I got it. The overall experience, based mainly on the performance of some highly competent actors, rates a five star from me. read more

If there is a Southern Rep show playing and you have the night free...Go!!! I was in town last weekend, saw two shows and they were both awesome. I believe they have two venues, Le Chat Noir and the main stage. Doesn't matter. Just go!!! Well cast, well executed, both just wonderful evenings of theatre. I went for a New Orleans Bingo show as my first visit tot he theater. I found the seating arrangement a little odd (you can't see the other half audience), but buying tickets online and choosing them was nice; now that i know what the place looks like, picking them out will make a bit more sense. They have a little bar that offers a few options for adult beverages, so all in all, it's not a bad little place to see a show. read more

Great little unpretentious theater on the edge of the French Quarter. Parking in the building, they validate at the theater so it is easy to get to if you are walking OR driving. I have been going here for over a decade, and I truly believe it is the most consistent professional venue for theater, and more specifically for entertainingly innovative theater in New Orleans. You will have a great time, whether it be laughing or crying. It is also within a few blocks of dozens of eateries, from burrito joints to five star restaurants. You can show up in anything from a suit to blue jeans. Plus they serve booze at intermission, beer as well as wine if you have a theater virgin with you who needs fortifying. If I lived in the city year round I would definitely have season tickets. Totally perfect for a date night. read more
