We filled out an application for a pup they had and got an email confirmation the application was being sent to Heartland. To be sure they got it, I sent them an email directly with a summary of what we were looking for and attached a copy of the application in case they hadn't received it. For the week after that, we had no response at all from Heartland. Nothing. No acknowledgement by phone, text, nor email. I didn't expect much, but did expect something. The adoption process is way too complicated. We wanted to adopt a rescue or shelter dog as our last pet was, but it is simply too complicated and frustrating, especially when the place with the animals won't participate. We ended up going with a breeder and have the pup at home now. To be fair, Elkhart Humane Society called a day after we submitted an application to keep on file to say we were accepted. Another agency sent an email saying the pup we were interested in had been adopted that day but they would keep the application. Not so for Heartland. They did eventually send an email . . . 3 days after we had our puppy at home. We've had 2 dogs in our home for decades. We prefer going the rescue/humane society route, but they make it much too hard and frustrating to use. Not sure I'll even try using them next time. I'm glad some folks had a good outcome with them, but for us it was nothing but crickets from Heartland.

She was given to Heartland Small Animal Rescue. I immediately called Mandy from Heartland (twice). She confirmed that they did have Mya. I told her that I would take Mya THAT DAY. I could meet her or whoever had Mya in less than an hour. She told me that she could not adopt out a dog until I had filled out an application and encouraged me to do so. I immediately did. She promised that she would give me a call on Monday. That call never came. I called Mandy again on Friday, October 10th in the afternoon. She did not return that call either. On Saturday, October 11th, I went to PetSmart in South Bend for the adoption event that Heartland holds weekly. I met Mandy, who informed me that Mya had been adopted just last night. I asked why she never called me. These are the "reasons" she gave: 1. She was waiting to hear from South Bend Animal Control to see if they wanted the dog back. She never heard from them. Why then, I asked, did she allow Mya to be adopted by someone, if she was waiting for animal control? I never received an answer to this. 2. She said that my vet references did not check out, but it clearly said on my application that all of my dog's vaccinations and heartworm preventative are from VIP PetCare clinic. I have receipts of this. 3. She said she had been busy. Interestingly, I had called her and left a message on Friday afternoon. Too busy to call me, but still able to take your call. I appreciate that the volunteers at Heartland are just that--volunteers. Ethically, Mandy should have called me at some point in this process. Instead, it seems that she and South Bend Animal Control were simply going to wait for it to blow over. By the power of sheer incompetence on the part of South Bend Animal Care and Control and of lack of ethics on the part of Heartland, I am unable to adopt the dog that I fell in love with. My heart is broken, and I can only hope that this message will save others from the same pain and frustration. Adopt elsewhere.

They made everything so easy during this rough time. The facilities were nice and they added included many services to make the entire process stress free. We were really surprised to find out they were going to deliver the remaining plants and photos from the visitation. I called Kryder Cremation Services Tuesday morning and get some info so I could make the decision to bury him in our pet cemetery or cremate him. They made my choice so easy! Information was readily shared, they were polite and very soothing to speak to. 20 minutes later I was in the car on my way to them. Went in and the area is clean, bright, and a few meows were lounging to greet me. A few questions later about individual or group cremation, and basic info about me and my Napoleon dynamite, a fee of $120.00 was paid and I was on my way home to eat cookies and sob in my bed. The next afternoon they called and said that he was ready to be picked up and gave me the hours of operation again. I couldn't believe that in just over 1 day it was done. Drove out there, was greeted by a orange and white meow ( which is what my Napoleon dynamite was) which almost brought me to my knees- the ladies at the desk were very fast to ask me what I needed and when I said that I was there to pick up my ashes one went to get them and the other gently spoke to me about the cats that I was admiring. The box that they sent him home in is absolutely perfect. Is tasteful and elegant and just so lovely. The certificate has his name on it and is wonderful as well.

We were instructed to go upstairs where we would meet our daughter's bridal consultant. Jen introduced herself and let me tell you there is nothing unforgettable about her. From her welcoming presence, to her huge smile, and especially the way she made our daughter feel very special. Jen led us to our seats which were so comfortable. It felt like we were going to experience this bridal dress shopping in the comfort of our own home. In front of us was this large room full of mirrors, a pedestal, and curtains held open by metal tiebacks. Jen took her daughter and started looking at dresses. Jen asked our daughter so many questions. She wanted to know our daughter personally, so she could select the correct gowns. Jen assisted our daughter getting her gown on and she'd open up those curtains and it was like this grand experience. The last gown our daughter tried on was the most beautiful and perfectly designed for her. It's like consultant Jen knew that this was the finale gown. We explained to Jen that we had another bridal appointment at one of the chain bridal store. Jen took our daughter's measurements for the finale gown our daughter loved. Our daughter did not receive her bridal moment at the chain store and the dresses she tried on did not compare to her finale gown at your shop. Our daughter called your shop back and asked if she could come back and try on that finale gown one more time. Jen was right there to welcome us. Jen had our daughter in the gown with the veil and she grandly opened up those curtains and there wasn't a dry eye in the place. Our daughter said, "I say yes to the dress". He wrote up the bill and said he triple checked it on quickbooks, then after it was already 1/2 paid he called and said we owed an extra $500. Money was no issue for us to pay, but he messed up the pending arrangements in the paper saying my father had passed away when it was my brother who passed away; when we went to go pay the bill he said it was our fault and nothing was his fault, even though when he messed up the pending arrangements in the paper for everyone to see he personally took the blame and apologized at the time. Thank god he sent a reviewed copy of my brothers obit, because he put his death date as March 17, 1937 when it was March 7, 2017. Do not let him use a pencil to fill out a contract, and if you decided to use this horrific funeral home make sure you record every conversation you have with Pat McGann. In the end all he cared about was his new roof he had just put on his funeral home and MONEY MONEY MONEY. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE.

The end of my husband's obituary was missing when they posted it on the website; however, the correction was made quickly after I called to notify them.
