Enter through the jaws of a shark definitely the city of souvenirs. There were plenty of options for everyone at all ages and I can say it was a little bit overwhelming, but in a good way. From T-shirts to sandals toys to jewelry, airbrush, T-shirts plushy's bathing suits everything. Some things were pricier than others, but that comes with what you want. Decent pricing. LOTS of stuff. Our kids loved their air brush sweatshirts. Getting to walk into the shark mouth is always a "bucket list" thing for the kids to do. Overall it's a solid shop. The store was not only packed with people, but was packed with shelving units that made it so difficult to navigate in there. It's easy to lose your party. Member in here. I was one of three people standing in the jewelry sections, calling their family to see where the rest of them were. Selection was OK. Normal touristy stuff. I was so overwhelmed by the close quarters and stuff everywhere that we left without anything. I don't think a staff member acknowledged us at all, which is rare for the area. They were super busy though. We actually went over to the Purple Octopus next door and were much happier. Similar prices, a selection of that was huge but not as overwhelming. Just across the street from the beach it was hit very hard by Hurricane Sally and just reopened after months of repair. It's been a couple years since I reviewed this place, it definitely have earned an upgraded review because they're all upgraded. There's a very new look and feel inside with expanded apparel with lots and lots of t-shirts and new lines of merchandise. There's still hermit crabs, shells, fudge, taffy and the expected touristy swag but it has a new look and feel with a revitalized staff. It had a new and different vibe, nice. This tourist mecca with it's iconic 70 foot long shark with its 20 foot tall mouth has an interesting history that is very Gulf Shores dating back to 1956. It all started when Josie Weaver Weir moved from Selma to Gulf Shores in the 1940s and opened a cafe called Jo's Lunchbox. In 1956, in that 1,000-square-foot building, she turned the restaurant into The Anchor gift shop. Black-and-white photographs from the time show a Gulf Shores that's almost nothing like what it looks like today. Back then it was a very different with no development, no high-rises, just sand dunes and surf.In 1959, Josie's son, Clyde Weir, took over the gift shop. Over the years, as Gulf Shores grew, so did Souvenir City. For nearly 30 years the store was known by the giant conch shell on the east side facing 59. But in 1984 Clyde added the original 50-foot shark entrance on the south side of the building. Having survived and rebuilt from the 1976 massive hurricane Frederic tragedy struck again when on Feb. 4, 1996, Souvenir City caught fire and burned to the ground along with the conch, the shark, all the merchandise in the store. Clyde was determined to reopen, and that it did. When the bigger and better Souvenir City reopened on March 1, 1997, it was in a 3,000 square foot building and had a new supersized shark entrance. The current owner is Paul Johnson, who bought the business in 2007, had gotten a job here when he was in high school and has been there ever since. As for Clyde, now in his 80's is retired but is still making an impact on Gulf Shores. He and his daughter donated 25 acres to the new, $30 million Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. What I also love here is their custom T-Shirt & Appearal counter where you can get any shirts screen print the way you like it. I got my gf a tie dye blue shirt here she was so in love with it. I also love their fudge counter which has a wide variety of fudges. Which they also let you sample so you may walk away with that perfect fudge. I also love Bills Lemonade. It has to be the best of squeezed lemode I have ever drank. The cashiers we're friendly & knowledgeable along with the floor staff who will help you find anything you need & answer questions on whatever you need answered. Let me begin by saying that I am not a fan of souvenir shops. That being said, Souvenir City is one of the better ones. This shop has everything a tourist could want. The engrave is a giant shark's mouth where you can take the mandatory tourist photo. As you enter there is a peep hole for kids where they can look and see the bones of the shark's victims. Inside are thousands of high quality shells. No need to walk the beach searching for the perfect sand dollar anymore. They also have loads of tshirt, stuffed animals and trinkets. If you're forced to go to a souvenir shop, give this one a try. read more

I can only take coming here about once a year but for visiting friends who love souvenir shopping, this is where I bring them. Massive selection of t-shirts, nice shell selection, homemade fudge, overpriced Yeti mugs with various Gulf Shores logos, some kind of hermit crab area that attracts a lot of kids, etc... You can find just about anything as far as souvenirs here. Here's a tip, if you like to repurpose bags like we do, they have sturdy souvenir bags that they use at checkout if you spend $50 or more, however, they will try and pack as much stuff into one bag as possible. I spent $289 and they overpacked my bag and when I asked for another they said no. I had to get the manager and told her I could have done 5 separate transactions and received 5 bags, so she handed me one more. My son and daughter were with me and wanted one and my son spent $40 something. So, my tip for you is separate your transactions and they can waste more time and paper on receipts if you would like the nice souvenir gift bag, because no matter how much over $50 you spend in one transaction they will load it up and try to pack as much into one as possible. Technically, we could have separated ours together and gotten 6 but would be happy with 3. I am grateful to the manager for the one extra she gave for the $289 I spent. I did say before I asked for the manager that I would just return and rebuy but it's exchange only. read more

So I don't go in here often as I obviously don't shop for souvenirs from a place so close to home. We've been here once or twice with out-of-town guests, and I stopped in today because my dad wanted a new ball cap and I thought one that made him think of us would be nice. The place is huge, and they have everything you could possibly want to take home. I especially love the vast selection of Christmas ornaments. I might have pick up a few around Christmas to send to my out of town friends. The best thing they carry that will actually keep me going in there was Bon Secour candles and wax melts. They make the best fragrances and the smell lasts forever! My favorites are Sea Salt & Agave and Southern Sands. I have both in my house right now and it smells amazing! Now I know where I can buy them if I run out before I get to another local market where they're being sold. The prices on everything seem about average. Nothing is overpriced. Most of the hats and tshirts don't look cheap either. Kids probably love walking through the big shark mouth at the main entrance. read more

WARNING: if you stop here once, every Gulf Shores family vacation or couples getaway henceforth will have a obligatory goofy photo inside the shark's mouth. Enter the haven of every southern child's beach vacation memories: the stinking cubbies filled with dried fish, preserved sea life and polished rocks. Shelfs are lined with with an assortment of rock candy, fudge, and alligator carcasses - I kid you not. This place is very dear to my heart, and I love stopping in because I can get 95% of my souvenir and family gift shopping done in this single store. First timers: be sure to visit the back of the store as well. They have a pretty cool pirate ship that makes for some equally great photo ops that everyone seems to forget. Also, once you walk in the shark's mouth, be sure to peer into his "stomach" through the small red door. read more

What kid doesn't want to walk through the giant mouth of shark? I have probably been to Souvenir City over 50 times. I've been since I was a small child multiple times per beach trip. As always it's a must to take a picture at the shark's mouth! Never missed a year of that photo opp. As far as actually purchasing souvenirs here, these aren't the highest OR lowest prices in the Gulf Shores/OBA area, something learned from many years of experience. There are cheaper places to buy souvenirs. Besides the shark mouth feature, this is just another souvenir store. Don't get me wrong though, the staff is good and it has been open for many years. I hardly ever buy anything, but we always like to spend time walking around inside because they do have some interesting stuff. One thing that sets them apart is the rather large selection of shells-natural, color dyed and non color dyed, sea stars, sand dollars etc. They also sell those neat air plants. Anything that you'd find at a normal souvenir place can be found here, with the exception of a couple extras like the blown glass creations, the more upscale swimwear/beachwear lines (Roxy, Guy Harvey, etc), and nicer beachy home decor on one of the far sides of the store. If you've never been it is worth the visit, even if just for a few pictures at the door! read more
