Let me just say this: the service here is something special. We had a reservation, and the host--whose name I wish I remembered--went above and beyond to make sure we got the best table. Overlooking the lighthouse, at sunset. That moment alone made the meal unforgettable. And then the food landed. The lobster roll was everything I hoped for. But it was the seafood platter that really got me. The fish was perfectly done--crispy, golden batter with just the right heft. I always say, you can tell a good fish and chips from the first bite of the batter. This one passed with flying colours. But more than the food, this place teaches a masterclass in service. We came here as part of a tour to Peggy's Cove. It is right down by the lighthouse there, well close enough to see from the restaurant and chosen for its location but also they had some really good lobster. We were expecting a lobster roll, but they placed a full lobster down in front of each of the 40 people on the tour. Have you ever cracked open a lobster? This was my first so I think I did well on my virgin experience and stripped the meat from as many places as I could find. We were in Peggy's Cove on a cruise ship excursion and our tour guide said the gingerbread from the Sou'Wester was not to be missed. We decided to get some for the bus ride back to the ship. It was really good - more similar to spice cake than traditional gingerbread in my opinion - and we got ours topped with lemon sauce. The prices do seem high, whether that's typical for the area, inflated since it's a tourist spot, or a combination of both I'm not sure, but just something to be aware of. We weren't super hungry so we just grabbed some seafood chowder to go. It was ready after a short wait. We took it outside and sat with our chowder on a chilly day overlooking the ocean, how wonderful is that? The chowder was really yummy. It had generous chunks of seafood, tender potatoes, and overall well seasoned and hearty. We both enjoyed it very much. We ordered the lobster roll, the chowder, salmon cakes, and the mussels. The Mussels were good, fresh, the lobster roll tasted fresh, but what really surprised me was the salmon cakes. We just wanted a steamed lobster while in Halifax. Our family of five took a bus tour to Peggy's cove. We had an hour to eat. We were seated promptly. We were waited on relatively soon after sitting. We had to inquire about our food twice. It took forty five minutes to come, and they only had four orders. They lost one of our family member's order. The food was cold and a disappointment all around as we rushed to eat the food we did receive . There was little remorse or apology from the wait staff. We felt like true sucker - tourists for eating at The Sou'Wester. I would never eat there again . Peggy's Cove & Seafood = PURRFECTION! If you can believe it, this was our first stop and first seafood in Nova Scotia! Hubs and I won an insane whirlwind trip to Nova Scotia from Community Food Centres Canada. We arrived at 630 am on a red eye and grabbed our rental and drove straight to Peggy's Cove for the sunrise. And then popped into Sou'Wester Restaurant when they opened for our first bite to eat! I had to order the Large Seafood Chowder with homemade rolls ($12.99) and hubs tried the traditional fisherman's breakfast ($13.99). First off, the views here are breathtaking obviously. I could have sat her all day (keep in mind were are Prairie landlocked prisoners). The chowder was delish though I could tell it could use a few more hours before reaching perfection but that's what happens when you order chowder at 9am. I was surprised to find that chowder here is not clam focused which is what I was accustomed to growing up on the west coast. I think I could get used the chowders of the East, filled with every seafood imaginable! Hubs' fisherman's breakfast was the show stealer for me. The salted cod fish cakes were bewildering to my senses yet absolutely delicious. The green tomato chow was something I had never heard of before and went really well with the salted cod fish cakes. The beans were not my favourite - maybe it takes some getting used to. Our server was lovely and helped us map out our entire day. Because of her, we drove out the lighthouse highway trail, visited Mahone Bay and the breathtaking cemetery there en route to Lunenburg to go to the Atlantic Fisheries Museum and then back to Halifax for our night. Also, be sure to check out the HUGE gift shop before you leave. Found the perfect souvenirs to bring home to the kids. The Sou'Wester Restaurant and Gift Shop is located in Peggy's Cove right by Peggy's Point Lighthouse. My visit here was on October 26, 2017 as a part of our cruise excursion. We had to order what we wanted before we left Halifax. Our choices were Lobster or Chicken. Of course I went with lobster. After visiting the outside of the place and having a discussion with our tour guide telling us about lobsters and letting us hold one, it was finally 12:30 pm, so it was time for lunch. I think the various buses from the cruise line were the only ones here for lunch for the most part. As a group, we had at least half of the dining room occupied, if not more. Seating inside was immediate and we could choose which table we wanted to sit at. Once seated, service began almost immediately. Since we had ordered on the bus, the server took our drink orders and brought out some warm soft bread and butter for us while we waited for the main attraction. They give you a bib to wear since eating lobster can be quite messy. Also, the place mats on the table had information on how lobster is caught, as well as instructions on how to properly eat a lobster. About 5-10 minutes after getting the bread, the main attraction arrived at our table. The lobster looked really good when it came to the table. At first, you might think it was still living since it was the whole lobster. They provided the tools needed to crack open the meat out of the lobster. I don't recall a time where I've had a full lobster before, so this was definitely an experience for me. The lobster was amazingly good and tender. The meal also came with some potato salad and cole slaw, which was more like your run of the mill stuff, so the sides could have remained on the sidelines. Service was good throughout the experience. They were busting their tails from table to table getting the food out, refilling drinks and such. They definitely had their plan in place and was executed well. You can tell they have definitely done this before many times. After eating, I went over to the gift shop portion of the business. They have quite a few items to choose from there. Of course, most items were Peggy's Cove or the lighthouse themed. Since I do collect lighthouses, I did get a lighthouse to add to my growing collection. The check out process was easy. However, I do want to make some notes about this for those of us that aren't Canadian. All transactions are done in Canadian dollars for credit/debit cards. You can have them convert it to USD for a 4% currency conversion fee. It didn't apply to me since I have a card with no foreign transaction fees; if you have a card that does have that fee, check what your credit card charges first. If the card charges less than 4%, continue your transaction in Canadian dollars. This place is fits the perfect definition of being touristy. No matter where you go, there will always be some places that are on the touristy side. This is a classic version of it by having the restaurant and gift shop together with themed merchandise for that specific area. This is not a bad thing. This place is in such a good location. One thing to note is that there isn't much else nearby at the lighthouse, so if you want to look for something to eat, this is the place to go. There are a few little shops within walking distance as well, but each of them have different types of merchandise. Overall, this was a nice spot to visit. If I'm in the area again in the future, I would give this place a try again, but would ask for different sides. The lobster here was great. Their shop has quite a bit of touristy items and mementos to choose from. If you're in the area visiting Peggy's Cove for the day and looking for some food, this place is definitely worth checking out. read more

We went here for a late lunch while visiting Peggy's Cove. The key words here are "late lunch." The restaurant was about half full, with plenty of wait staff. We were seated right away, but had to wait 20 minutes before our server even acknowledged us. I was told I would get one of the freshest lobster roll here but honestly I thought it was one of the worst lobster roll I had both in-terms of flavor and the amount of lobster meat they provided for the price. Later I regretted that I should have tried from the Tom's which was walking distance away. Visited on a recent Tuesday and it was a disaster. Several tours were there (including ours). There was no good, so let's jump to the bad, shall we? Because of the length of our stay at Peggy's Cove (an hour), we ordered to-go. The woman running the to-go counter, while friendly enough, was slow, and either did not hear well or had trouble comprehending what most people in line were ordering. When it came to our turn, having noticed the issues, I specifically pointed to the lobster roll on the menu, which was to include fries and coleslaw, but once we paid and stepped back in to the chaos to wait for our food, I looked at the receipt to see we had been charged for the lobster roll only, which necessitated another wait in line to purchase additional snacks to round out lunch. When there are multiple busses in the village and the place is mobbed, perhaps there might be a different employee that would be better equipped to handle the rush. Next, and the most disappointing -- the lobster roll. Just no. All the way there, our tour guide talked smack about Maine and how the Halifax lobster is better, sweeter, etc. ALL LIES. For a place that touts itself as a famous fishing village, we expected something more. It was bad. By comparison, what we had the day prior in Maine had a nice, warm and buttery toasted bun, and big chunks of lobster. This one was stone cold through and through; more lobster shreds than chunks, and obviously pre-made and sitting in a cooler waiting to be chucked in a paper boat and served. I should have had a clue when the person in front of us asked how long it would take for a roll to be ready and the employee said it comes out fast. 0/10 would not recommend. The shrimp was very tasty but the size of the shrimp and the number of shrimp provided did not justify the price. The lobster was the star of the show.
