Dined on 11/1 while spending the weekend in downtown Halifax. Sat by myself at the bar on a busy Friday night and loved the shotgun style layout and lighting inside. Ordered a great cocktail (Summer Air) from a bartender recommendation, and got the Gnocchi (with butternut bisque, kale, grilled zucchini, walnut honey, tallegio, and sage oil) as my entree dish. I have mixed feelings about our dinner at Edna. The service was lovely, they had great ambiance for a romantic dinner and the whole table loved their food choices. I had the grilled squid which may have been the only miss on the menu. The individual components of the dish was very overpowering and the squid got lost in the flavor shuffle. I had a bite of the rainbow trout with parsley and kalamata olive salad, carrot and radish which was much much better. Great place, great service, great food but skip the grilled squid. Also, the neighborhood around this restaurant gets rough at night so I would not recommend going for a walk after dinner. read more

We waited too long to make a Saturday night reservation so the latest we could get was 5:30 but I'm glad we took that very early time. There was only 1 table taken when we arrived but it slowly started to fill up in the next hour or so. Even when more customers arrived it was still easy to have a conversation with the people at our table without shouting. Our server, Shaw, could not have been nicer throughout the night, knowledgeably answering questions ranging from the type of oysters being served tonight to the ingredients in some of the dishes, to restaurants in a completely different city we will be traveling to. But on to the food! There were 4 of us and everyone throughly enjoyed their meals. The Merigomish & the Foxley River Oysters were delicious as were the Baked Clams. The Beet Salad was also a hit. The Scallops with Arancini and the Grilled Squid with Pickled Fennel were both amazing, as was the Halibut Cheek, which was perfectly cooked. A shared Toffee Cake with Black Sesame Seed ice cream completed the meal. Not inexpensive but well worth the tastes and experience. read more

We stopped here, looking for a lighter dinner without realizing what an amazing place this was. It was busy and we ended up taking our food to go as we had an airbnb close by. The lobster tagliatelle was so delicious ... perfect pasta and lots of seafood in a delicious sauce. The halibut was very tasty with perfectly cooked vegetables and we also enjoyed the very tasty charcuterie board. A top-notch dining experience, on par with the best in much larger cities. We were walkins on Thursday evening but go lucky - was a quiet night and we were greeted immediately and seated promptly. Service was impeccable the entire night - our server was always attentive without being overbearing, and guided us through the menu, customizing how things were coursed and paired. Room, like the food, is simple yet elevated. It was warm and inviting, suitable for a romantic dinner, special occasion, business meal, or just catching up with family and friends. Everything we ate was perfectly prepared, incredibly satisfying: grilled oysters, pickled cauliflower salad (so much going on yet well balanced), lamb ragu gnocchi, and bread pudding with black sesame ice cream. All interesting without trying too hard to be "inventive." It was elevated comfort food. Fun cocktails that went well with the initial plates and nice selection of wines by the glass, including some knockout QC whites. Cheese course was a bit skimpy on the serving size, but came with ample bread and condiments (which we ended up eating all of). Also would have preferred a bit more cauliflower in the cauliflower salad (ie, was heavy on the other components), but both of these small hiccups were not enough to remove a star from an exemplary evening. Three courses with cocktails and wine pairings tallied up to ~$100/person. Pricey, but absolutely earned. Would definitely like to come back to explore the rest of the menu. read more

Best meal I've had in a year!! The food is beyond exceptional - creative, gorgeous, thoughtful... master chef prepared! The oysters had fresh shaved horseradish, a perfect mignonette and even a house made strawberry chili sauce to accompany them. Blew me away! My friend and I dined at Edna last Friday evening - a careful choice based on our mutual love of supporting local and also based on previous experiences there. We were both sadly disappointed. The level of service was poor (we ordered drinks and received them after our entrees arrived). Our server was pushy, bordering on rude, rushing us at every interaction. We wondered why we were being pushed as the restaurant was not full and no one was waiting in a line. The food was good, not great. Our plates and serviettes were wisked away before we were finished (and without being asked). This is certainly not the level of customer service we were expecting at this venue. I used to be a regular here but it's slipping each time I go. The lighting is constantly poor in there, we were sat at a table where there wasn't really enough room for the plates. Staff seemed not to their usual attentive norm and the background noise made it hard to have a conversation. The food was good, but again, for the prices charged something was just off. Normally I'm blown away when I come here, but this wasn't the best experience and I'll certainly choose elsewhere in future if I'm spending this kind of money. What a delightful place! Amazing food. Cheerful, welcoming staff. Nice decor. Fairly quiet noise level. You should eat here! My spouse and I started our meal with the cheese and meat board, full size. It was super yummy. I then had halibut, small potatoes, and a vegetable-something that I can't recall (it had been grated, shaped, and then lightly fried, like a thick and perfectly done latke). My spouse had smoked pork fettuccine, which was a tasty pulled pork with perfectly cooked pasta. Truly, all of these items were amazing. We ate at the bar because we hadn't made a reservation and were just walking in off the street in hopes of having good luck. And we were thrilled to eat our dinner there last night! It was great. An October Saturday: We waited for about 20mins for a table. We were seated at 12:14pm. Customer service: specials were announced. Water was immediately served. We ordered an oyster Ceasar and it arrived within 5 mins. Servers were attentive and proactively gave us sharing plates without asking. Kitchen service: we ordered the special (Duck Breast and Eggs) + Salmon gravlax side, and the special scone. We were asked if they need to be served at the same time and we couldn't care less. The scone arrived within 8 mins of ordering; while the special came within 15mins. Oyster Ceasar ($11): 4/5 the oyster is super fresh. The Ceasar tasted a bit less flavors than other Ceasars we have come to drink and love. Chocolate and Strawberry scone ($8): 5/5 the warm scone is to tie for. Compare to conventional scones this one is just right on the heaviness factor. The chunks of Strawberry and chocolate are not overwhelming and didn't affect the consistency of the scone. The accompanying sauce and flavored cream adds to the already tasty scone. Duck Breast and Eggs ($16): 4/5 comes with 2 sunny side eggs, roasted squash, potato Brussels with caramelized onions. The duck breast unfortunately was overdone and was too chewy. The squash potato was nice combo and not over-fried. The eggs are done right and fried nicely. Salmon gravlax side ($5): 4/5 never had gravlax before. It reminded us of salmon lox, but the saltier version. Good to try. Overall: not too shabby at all! We were fully stuffed with the portions. Wow, this is an equivocal 5-star review. This restaurant is not posh or elegant, it is a bit on the comfortable and casual side. But the food is tremendous and prepared with meticulous care and the service was knowledgeable and efficient. That to me equals top billing. We sat at the bar, though the hostess told us it would be just a short wait for a table. Since it was just the two of us the bar was comfortable. The server had cool water in front of us immediately (the day had been very warm and this was appreciated) and was inquiring about drink orders. She then helped us with the unfamiliar Canadian wine, which we enjoyed. No food photos, we were hungry and it was consumed quickly! We shared several of the days' fresh oysters, yum! Also as tasty were the crab cakes, market salad and scallops! Also had room for very delectable key lime pie and butterscotch pudding!! If we are in Halifax again, we will return. We had The First Fig cocktail which was very, very, good. We also had the appetizer of the day which was a mozzarella with garlic sauce, toasted bread and greens. It was okay but we both felt the cheese could have been served slightly warmer and the garlic sauce was overwhelming. The pork chop and polenta dinner was yummy! Flavor was great and chop cooked to perfection. The desserts we tried- a semifreddo and a chocolate flourless cake were superb. The help was friendly and service great. While EDNA wouldn't have been my choice of old lady names for my restaurant, it was one of the many new restaurants I wanted to hit this summer. With some planning I drug my south ender butt up there to meet my girl friend for dinner. The interior of the restaurant oozes a sort of relaxed, modern cool with lots of blacks and whites that are softened by the plentiful re-purposed looking wood boards which run along part of the ceiling and down one wall in a garage door fashion. A large communal table sits in this spot as well, under some elegant, but not over the top, chandeliers. The bar area dials the fancy back with shelves made from black pipes and boards, with plenty of nick nacks strewn amongst the more useful items (re. booze). Our friendly and professional waitress saw to us quickly and we soon had drinks in hand while we perused the menu. The menu is compact, with only five or six starters and mains on a given night, although the menu changes constantly so it doesn't get old. When I saw the duck on the menu, I was pretty much set at that point, but I was drawn in further by the quinoa and snow pea salad, seasonal veggies and a rhubarb and orange relish. Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner. I also ordered the soup of the day, a beet and peppercorn soup with mango chutney, which sounded great on a hot evening. The soup turned out to be a bit different than I expected, as it was apparently a golden beet and not your regular purple beet, but this was probably all for the best, given beets' infamous ability to stain everything. It had a smooth texture, and a mild beet flavour with some fruity sweetness from the mango and a nice little pep from the peppercorns. After a little bit of a wait for our mains, we eagerly dug in when they arrived. There was a good amount of duck, a drum stick and thigh, with thick, crisp skin that must have been finished after being confited, and that great duck flavour that makes it stand above the more common fowl. The snow peas still had a pleasant crunch and buttery flavour, and the seasonal vegetables appeared to be some spring mix and broccoli rabe. The red quinoa didn't add much flavour wise, but it's a "super food" so I'll cut it some slack. The orange and rhubarb relish added a sweet and tangy burst of flavour to nicely round out the dish. While not normally a dessert person, it was hard to turn down the tasty offerings that they had, especially the butterscotch that our waitress raved about. We settled on that and the strawberry shortcake. The butterscotch definitely lived up to the hype and was far better than your run of the mill Jello butterscotch cup that only the really young or really old eat. Smooth and rich with a caramel-ish finish, this is what butterscotch should be known as. The strawberry shortcake had great local strawberries and real whipped cream, but the biscuit was noticeably on the dry side. I really hope EDNA isn't leading the wave in a trend of restaurants with old woman names, because eventually it's going to be a turn off. Do you see yourself dining regularly at GERTRUDE or AGNES? Are they all in capitals because they're hard of hearing and yelling at us? Luckily, EDNA is a one of a kind, and has the atmosphere, quality food and service to keep you coming back. read more

One of the best meals I have had in Halifax recently. Voted one of en Route magazine's top ten new restaurants in Canada. The interior is small and hipster chic with exposed filament light bulbs and lots of wood. Dimly lit at night. Very large communal dining table. The bar is in the Center of the restaurant with traditional seating at the front and back of the restaurant. Service was attentive and good. Washrooms at the back of the restaurant - look for the vintage Toledo Scale! Had the Icelandic cod which was fresh fresh fresh and perfect medium. Other members of the party all happy with their choices - pork tenderloin, trout, cassoulet. Reasonable portion sizes and pricing extremely reasonable as well. This was the first restaurant we ate at in out east coast trip and it was extremely good and one of the best restaurants that we ate at. This restaurant has a great, hipster-like atmosphere and serves really good food! We ordered the fishcakes and eggs, which comes with panko crusted fish cakes and poached eggs, with some potatoes and salad. We also had the salmon gravlax and latkes, so the latkes is basically a potato patty and house cured salmon which was extremely good. The service was great, the food came out fast so no complaints! Wasn't too busy when we arrived which was around 11 am, but we had to sit at the bar since all the tables were filled up. read more

Blueberry Scone - Delicious Homemade Goodness melting in my mouth with Blueberry Puree and Fresh Cream (OMG! Is halifax finally living up to expectations!) Then, The Savoury French Toast - Uh Oh. What a mess. This plate is unbalanced, flavourd are matching very well. Seems like it was a good idea but the execution didnt follow up The Salmon Grallax was quite good, but Seafood in a City by the Sea is not impressive. And then. The pancake. Served with fruits was quite plain and boring. When Restaurant in Toronto are reinventing the Brunch every year, those Banal Plates will only sastified customers with little to no idea of whats happening around the world I like when restaurant can find strenght in simplicity. Everyone seems to love Edna's - it was not bad but I'm not sure what the rave is all about! We came here for brunch just as they were closing up and they graciously seated us with 10 minutes to go before closing up shop for the afternoon. We opted for a little sweet and salty with the ricotta pancakes/traditional breakfast combo, as well as the poached eggs/crab cakes (because why not- you're on the east coast!), and a side of rosemary potatoes. The bacon was yum and the pancakes were very light and fluffy, which was great, but also surprisingly on the oily and greasy side. I thought the potatoes were going to be delicious but for $4 it was a really small portion and also I didn't see/taste any rosemary and they were also really greasy :( Everything else was ok. Maybe we would've had better luck if we came for dinner, which seems to be everyone's favourite! read more

I am late to this train, and I regret it ever so much. I admit it, I was intimidated. SO intimidated. EDNA is beautiful inside and out - and this isn't like a Dove commercial. It's real. From the outside, EDNA seems to pop off of the sidewalk thanks to the dark paint juxtaposed with brightly painted corners. The inside is dimly lit with gorgeous warm lighting and cozy wooden tables. White subway tiles cover the walls, accented with beautifully stained wood by the bar area...it's everything I love about an interior. Wait until you get to the food, though. There were four of us so we split appetizers, which were all beautiful to look at and beautiful to eat. I can't remember what it's called now, but if you are looking for a recommendation, the cheesy appetizer is mouth-wateringly good. For my main I had the perogies, which came in a beet puree and oh boy I didn't know I could every enjoy beets so much. I'm not usually really into beets, but this was perfection. It was so good I could have eaten five more helpings, even though it filled me right up. We also decided to split a desert, the gingerbread cake. It tasted like Christmas, which was odd considering it was a beautiful spring day, but my tastebuds rejoiced. If you're looking for somewhere to celebrate something special or if you want to treat yourself, I'd highly recommend EDNA. It's pricey, but it's so so worth it. read more

I've been traveling to Halifax over several months, and was surprised to find that it has a very respectable foodie and wine scene. In particular, Edna's is a stand out. The street location is a bit rough around the edges, but everything inside makes this a must-see. The menu rotates through fresh locally caught and farmed ingredients. It's not a large menu but everything has been consistently exceptional. The wine list also rotates and includes bottles from local Nova Scotia vineyards and a wide variety of other international regions including Italy, France, etc. The Sommelier is really on her game. Then we get to the space. Really well done, cozy, inviting, I included a few pics. And finally (my priority), the staff is amazing, universally everyone working at Edna's are knowledgeable, attentive, and so friendly. I rarely feel like someone gets everything right.
