Initially, communication happened over email, but it involved a lot of back-and-forth questions rather than simply checking thoroughly for the mail. When I came in person the first time, Riley told me the cards could not be found. When I returned later, she explained that the mail had been placed in an "inactive" box. Apparently, if an account goes inactive, customers are expected to notify staff to check that area. I don't feel customers should need to instruct staff where to look for their own mail, especially for important items like credit cards. As a result of this delay, I now have three cards, two of which no longer work. Beyond the logistical issue, the interaction itself was disappointing. The responses came across as polite on the surface, but ultimately dismissive.it was not helpful or resourceful in trying to fix the situation, and focused more on telling me what I should do differently in the future rather than taking responsibility or offering solutions. The service itself has potential, but there needs to be clearer internal processes and better customer service when mistakes happen--especially when sensitive mail is involved.

I have to say this is nothing too fancy, but happens to be exactly what I need. There is a small dining area, on the right hand side when you walk in. It fits a double door fridge and a sink, along with a long dining table where you can also find disinfectants supplies. The main area isn't anything huge or fancy, but it is spacious enough to fit a few large tables and some individual seats by the window. There is also a small couch near the entrance area, next to a printer. High ceiling and ample lighting help create a space for work and study. Only downside for me is that the bathroom situation could be better. It is not gross, but also not the cleanest. For a big floor that can probably fit more than 15 people to the fullest, it has only two stalls. I have only been here during the weekends, and it had never been crowded. People here are usually really quiet and only focus on their own work. All in all, I would give this a 4.5 for its price and convenience.

If I could give it an extra star I would. I tell all my freelance/writer Brooklyn friends about it, sometimes twice b/c I'm intense :P It truly has everything one could need from a work space, if not more than some I've seen. Private call booths, desk variety, fast wifi printer, etc etc. It's a smaller, local space compared to most so there's no bar or gym (or for all I know, strip club) like some boast, but it feels much more cozy than any I've used. Most other co-working spaces, especially the huge ones and chains, tend to feel very corporate, even if well designed, which is sort of the exact opposite vibe that most creatives, freelancers, and nomad workers are looking for (imo + the peeps I've discussed this with) There is a relaxed air at PSD with the little added touches like cute bathroom doors, umbrellas to borrow, exposed brick, and large front windows that let great natural light and views of the residential neighborhood it's in. Not to mention the distinct differences in decor between each room that cater to work environment preferences, or whatever mood you're in that day! Plus, super important to me and most... it really is quiet! Every time I'm there, everyone is respectful and very quiet, even on days when rooms are full (which I take as a good sign that people come back because they can actually get sh*t done here) Even when the owner gives tours to interested peeps, or someone grabs his attention, he's tip-toe quiet! Since I travel a lot, I've used a lot of spaces and OMGeezuz, a remarkably high # of them are loud! Because of sheer size, or socializing with alcohol past 5, or w/e.... that I've left before I wanted too. Damn annoying when you're paying to work away from home. I've never left this space earlier than I've intended for any reason like that. I think a lot of that is due as well to the high quality chairs, desk, desk lights, etc so I'm comfortable and my back doesn't hurt even after a long work session. The owner is also super accommodating and responsive (and actually a kind, very pleasant person!... which feels like rarity amongst landlords and managers) AND, it's very fairly priced! Any I've seen in the city are often 2x the price so you'll likely need to chose which kidney to sell over a DESK, and usually lack all the personal, local nifties I rambled on about above. It would be way worth it anyways if it were higher priced or farther out of someone's way from other spaces, which why I mention this last. Anyways, I'll shutup now! The shared area has two things that are essential to most workspaces: coffee and printers. The community at PencilWorks is positive and energetic, while respecting each person's work day. Nathan, the community developer at PW, was always quick to respond to any questions or needs that arose. I now work from home, but if I ever need a workspace again, I'll return to PencilWorks.

In…read morethe 6 month span we spent here, we experienced: - a freezing cold room with no heating (windows were promised to be sealed but they sealed it in May, when the weather was starting to get hot) - frequently broken elevators (the coworking space is on the 6th floor so this was especially inconvenient) - frequently unavailable wifi - leaking roofs (the roof leaked on top of one of our employees) - extremely loud construction noises interrupting critical meetings / conferences - extremely cold A/C in all common areas (our team was constantly shivering) - an overheated room with no AC - frequently out of order bathrooms - weeks of no cleaning (even when regular vacuuming of rooms was guaranteed) ... the list really goes on. Plus the rents are at least $1000 more expensive than other great options in the area. It's a converted pencil factory, so it does have its charm, and we definitely would have been more forgiving if our concerns were dealt with. Not even speedily dealt with -- dealt with in general. Our concerns were constantly ignored. We are so disappointed.

I was never informed about this prior to my reservation date/time and I was never given the phone number to call. None of the phone numbers listed at the front desk worked. I called each one to try to find out how to get into my reserved office, which I reserved over 3 weeks in advance. The only person in the office was another renter, leading a group. If he hadn't come out of his room, I wouldn't have had any way to get into the room I reserved and paid for. He called the owner of the space and she remotely let me into the room. Then I got locked out of my room after I walked a client to the elevator. Good thing that same renter was still there and could call the owner to give him the pass of the door lock. My phone and computer were in that room and I would have been ****ed if he wasn't still there. This was the most unprofessional office space I have ever paid for. The office smelled like a cheap NYC massage venue, was incredibly hot, disgusting kitchen. When the other renter called the owner, I had to wait 20 minutes until they got back to him so I could get in the room I paid for. The waiting area and kitchen had no filtered water as described in the listing. The coffee maker -- which was disgusting and not clean -- didn't work and the other renter told me it hasn't worked for a while. The bathroom next door was horribly disgusting and could be smelled in the hallway. If need someplace cheap, this should do. If you need someplace that is even somewhat professional, go somewhere else.

When I first moved to Gowanus there were fewer options for co-workers - BCL were one of the first to do it right in the area. Cold brew coffee on tap, plenty of mixer events (topical & social). They are always quick to refer business between members (either via their online community OR thoughtful introductions).
