Fish & seafood were cooked pretty well but the rice was a bit soft for my liking and lacked flavor. However, the paella portion size could easily serve 4. We were one of only a few tables for a Wednesday evening, but it's not because the place doesn't deserve more business. An added plus, they were open a little later than many german restaraunts. We seated at around 8:00, and there was another couple that came in near the end of our meal. We stuck mostly to the traditional tapas menu, for diet reasons, but they were quite good. They brought out bread with what I think was an herby aioli, very yummy. The chorizo was nicely cooked in a wine sauce. We ordered the potatoes expecting something more like patatas bravas. Instead we got a small plate of baby baked potatoes along with a few sauces. If you like spicy sauce, it was tomato based and so flavorful. Everything else was fine. Not amazing or innovative but definitely solid. The service was awesome. The server spoke very little english, but made up for it with energy and personality. He would not stop bringing the delicious bread and aioli though I begged him not to. He had a few nice recommendations which we were happy to oblige. It is a fun thing that you grab your own beer or wine yourself. Especially prices and the quality of wines are quite reasonable. I find nothing interesting or special about the tapas variations I had there so far. Except chorizo, I'd say they all taste good but still mediocre. If you want to have an average food in a crowded (but fun) place with bad service in a central location, Der Spanier is a perfect choice. Make sure you reserve your seats in advance. Tables closer to the refrigerator are recommended. :)

My partner and I shared around 9 taps and it was a hell of a lot of food, but it was so delicious I was force feeding myself till the last tapas. Their sangria was also pretty good, and the service was quick and fast. I would highly recommend making a reservation before you show up, because this place is quite packed and fairly cozy.
