Once you get past the bar at the entrance this old style Spanish restaurant has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff but I expected more from the food. They start the meal off with a complimentary soup of the day (large portion ) and bread which was fine. The ordered the fried sardines as an appetizer which come in a portion of about 10 with the bone in . For mains we ordered the garlic shrimp which was spectacular the garlic sauce was delicious. Unfortunately the paella Valencia was a large portion but the rice and combination of fish, chicken, and meat made it very dry - I which there was more flavor and the chicken was better flavored

Very Special place to visit. In fact, they're the owners of Catas in Newark so they're very special to me. Similar and familiar setting you would expect from a Spanish Restaurant in the Newark area with many locals that come back for more of the food. Service is great; you're always checked on and without even expecting service for a new glass of water or requesting more bread; you're served right away. Given you're enjoying a pitcher of amazing sangria and ordering some appetizers or a couple of entrees such as the paella or a seafood dish like salmon. The bar area is filled with locals that converse with the owner that is always friendly with staff and customers throughout the night. My favorite dish would have to be the octopus salad and the sangria for an absolute delectable night!

Service was decent given that we were a large party but the food was pretty bad. The place needs a little upgrading as well. It looks older and kind of dingy. Website also needs upgrading because you can't find a menu anywhere (I have a little trouble remembering all the foods we tried due to this). The appetizers and soup were better than the entrees. I did enjoy the calamari. The mushrooms not so much (too watery). I ordered the seafood paella and the portion was HUGE. Can probably share one among 3-4 people. But the taste was very bland and the seafood tasted old and not fresh. I asked for hot sauce and the only hot sauce they had was Tabasco which did not help much with the flavor. I would avoid this restaurant unless it goes through major updates.

I love this restaurant... the whole vibe... the amazing Spanish soup getting dumped in your bowl like an endless fountain, the warm crispy Portuguese rolls steaming in the table. I ordered the seafood paella ( which despite what most people say you CAN ruin.) this was perfect though. I ordered the garlic shrimp as well which is always good. This is real deal Spanish food and I will be back. There is a lot of competition in Newark so it is hard to rate it 5 stars especially frequenting Iberia, Fernades, and fornos of Spain most of my life. I have a loyalty to them so don't mind the 4 stars but this place is not to be frowned upon. I will be back... especially for that soup!

Osso Bucco gusada lunch special, $13 with awesome home made chicken soup!

The lunch specials here are awesome, for $14 I had homemade chicken soup and a huge portion of veal stew. After you are done here you need a Siesta. The bar is always crowded with working men on their lunch break having one too many drinks, before the presumably head back to work. Also there is free indoor parking next door for anybody worried about parking in the Ironbound. But trust me this neighborhood is much better than it's rep.

Imagine that if you are driving thru the iron bound neighborhood for the first time, you may feel that you are being taken there to be "rubbed out", but once your fear subsides you have the lovely spanish sangria to enjoy. Amazing shrimps in wine sauce, HUGE steak on a sizzling stone, very tasty clam dishes and paella to die for.

The food is probably the closest you can get to actual Spanish tapas but what i love most about this place is that everythings got flavorrrrr For our table of 4 we got CROQUETAS with their house cured chorizo- very good POLLO FIORENTINA- chicken was so tender and packeddd with flavor! BARRIGUITA- plentiful serving for a tapa, we loved the potatoes it came with too CHICHARRON DE POLLO- flavorful chicken and easier to eat than you think TARTAR- delish but small Chipirones- sooo delicately breaded you can barely tell, was great COSTILLA A LA PLANCHA- plentiful for a tapa, we recommend cooking for longer since its traditionally a tough cut of beef SAUTED VEGETABLES- tastey and not mushy thankfully! MILLIONAIRE CAIPIRINHA for my drink. was soooo good, not too sweet and not quite as sour as a margarita, was perfect for me!

When I was there, they had a DJ playing, and it added energy without being too loud or overwhelming. The Service was very good, the waiter answered and helped with all our questions. The food was absolutely amazing really flavorful and well done. Just be a little prepared that most dishes come in smaller portions. But the quality definitely makes up for it. I ordered the paella, and it's easily enough for two or even three people and it was well worth it. Really delicious. The drinks were also definitely worth trying while you're there. The only thing I wasn't big on was the desserts they didn't quite live up to the rest of the meal. But overall, great atmosphere, excellent food, and a fun experience. I'd definitely come back.

We used the valet service, and upon walking inside, I noticed an older gentleman playing the piano in the foyer, which gave the place a really nice atmosphere. Even though the restaurant was busy, our wait was only about 5-10 minutes. While waiting, I couldn't help but notice how large the restaurant is. There are two bars and several separate dining areas that looked perfect for larger parties and special occasions. Once seated, we were served fresh bread while looking over the menu. I ordered the 32-ounce prime rib with A1 sauce, red peppers, and roasted potatoes. I also had the chance to try some of the sea bass. Both dishes were excellent. The prime rib was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, while the sea bass was fresh and well-prepared. A special shoutout to our waiter, Milan, who was attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was taken care of throughout our meal. The stuffed Sole was well sized and filled properly with shrimp, scallops and more. Highly recommend and it was cooked perfectly. The mash potatoes were a miss that came with it not seasoned and bland. The branzino was cooked perfectly and well seasoned. The grilled octopus was a little chewy which was disappointing but it was packed with flavor and would try again. If you're in Newark and want an amazing meal, highly recommend this place just note it's not cheap but it's worth every penny.

From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and ensure everything was perfect throughout our meal. I had shrimp with pepper sauce was equally impressive, packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. The sides of fresh vegetables, yellow rice, and the homemade potato chips complemented the meal beautifully. Dessert was the perfect ending to a fantastic evening. The flan was simply incredible--smooth, rich, and full of flavor. The chocolate cake was absolutely decadent and worth every bite. Spanish Tavern offers plenty of convenient parking and a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes it ideal for a date night, family dinner, or special occasion. What impressed me most is that after four decades, this restaurant continues to deliver outstanding food, exceptional service, and a memorable dining experience. Some places come and go. Spanish Tavern has stood the test of time, and for good reason. It remains a truly special place to enjoy great food and even better company. Highly recommended! Menu had a good selection of dishes and we shared a few for the entire meal. Taste was fine, solid and decently priced. I enjoyed the paella. I had the Garlic Chicken Cutlet entree ($34), a very generous serving of four pieces of tender, boneless chicken breast smothered in a bright, savory lemon garlic sauce, served alongside "Spanish fries" (which are actually delicious house-made potato chips) and fresh collard greens. It was incredibly tasty and very filling, with enough leftovers for lunch the next day! My dining companion went with the Garlic Shrimp entree ($35), paired with the "Spanish fries" and steamed veggies. She absolutely loved it.. noting that the shrimp were cooked perfectly and packed with flavor. To wash it all down, we each had a glass of the house special red sangria. It was fantastic -- bright, fruity, and clearly made with fresh ingredients rather than a sugary mix. Yum! PRO TIP #1: Bring cash. Chateau of Spain has added a 4% surcharge for credit card payments. PRO TIP #2: Check your bill. A 15% gratuity is automatically included on all checks.
