It was my first time here recently for a holiday gathering. Food - amazing! The seafood was succulent and incredibly fresh. The best muscles I've ever had!!! They had a pico de gallo type of accoutrement and it was spectacular! So easy to savor and devour lol. The prawns (minus the heads) were sooo delicious! The calamari lightly fried and perfectly crunchy - the sauce was there but it was NOT needed. The shrimp in garlic sauce, my God!! It's up there with the greats from a few other places around town. The bread & butter, believe it or not, just as phenomenal. Soft, fresh, and fluffy!!! And for the main event, the moment I'd been waiting for... the grilled octopus did NOT disappoint!!! Slurp worthy lol so yummy! Their baked salmon was just okay, needed more flavor/seasoning. But everything else more than made up for it. Oh yeah, there were these potatoes and onions combined in a block shape. So delicious! They were cold but I think they'd taste even better if they were warm/hot. The sangria was extremely weak and bland. Not much else to say about it, it was bad. Both red and white. Strong, but a Hard NO! I drank sprite and water most of the night. Service - I give grace because it was a big party and I think other gatherings were happening in other sections of the restaurant. Still, the service kind of sucked. When they were around, they were present. But, they weren't around much. We waited hours for our main course, no exaggeration. Ambiance - since it was a holiday gathering we were confined to a designated room. The tables were connected and the seating was a little more cozy than I'd prefer. But it wasn't too bad. The sangria was sour. Did not taste good at all with minimal fruit. The soup - skip it. It's Chicken noodle from a can and no one can tell me otherwise. After that the meal got better. The calamari, the garlic shrimp, clams casino and the salmon we had for dinner were all delicious. The garlic mushrooms we had for appetizer were also yummy. Old School Spanish hole in the wall in the Ironbound section away from busy Ferry St. Street Parking. Walk into a local's type bar in the front. Filled with local guys having a few beers and maybe a little food at the bar. News channels were on the TVS when we got there around 6pm on a Thursday. ( they had very little dinner business the night we went) Service was just OK. Food was OK. I liked the complimentary bowl of a soup as it is very traditional in Spain. I get the feeling this place may have had better days. Pre-Covid? Back when you could get good help all the time? Items were good sized portions but nothing stood out. Octopus (pulpo) Grilled was OK but lacking any char and needed more seasoning. My Chursasco short rib was very tasteful but a little tough. The biggest issue I had is that name of the place is "Spanish Sangria" and the red sangria was just not good at all. I'd take a box of Opici Sangria before a pitcher of this one again. The Spanish Sangria has been my family's go-to restaurant for decades. It's located on the corner of Magazine and Rome Streets, deep in the heart of the Ironbound section of Newark, way off the main street in the area (Ferry St.) It's so worth venturing off the main road. The food is delicious- I've never had anything that wasn't impeccably cooked and a huge portion. Before you even order they will serve you the soup of the day. On my most recent visit- a Saturday evening- it was chicken soup. Start your meal with a shrimp and garlic appetizer and grilled chorizo. Order a pitcher of red sangria. Save your hot, fresh bread to dip into the garlicy sauce that the shrimp swim in. My large family party ordered a number of different things: paella mariscada, filet mignon, chicken francesa. I can't even remember except that the service was attentive and the food as excellent as I always remember it being. This is probably a result of the sangria. The prices are excellent for the service and portions. I wish the parking situation was better. It was difficult to find street parking. read more

Once you get past the bar at the entrance this old style Spanish restaurant has a nice atmosphere and friendly staff but I expected more from the food. They start the meal off with a complimentary soup of the day (large portion ) and bread which was fine. The ordered the fried sardines as an appetizer which come in a portion of about 10 with the bone in . For mains we ordered the garlic shrimp which was spectacular the garlic sauce was delicious. Very Special place to visit. In fact, they're the owners of Catas in Newark so they're very special to me. Similar and familiar setting you would expect from a Spanish Restaurant in the Newark area with many locals that come back for more of the food. Service is great; you're always checked on and without even expecting service for a new glass of water or requesting more bread; you're served right away. Given you're enjoying a pitcher of amazing sangria and ordering some appetizers or a couple of entrees such as the paella or a seafood dish like salmon. The bar area is filled with locals that converse with the owner that is always friendly with staff and customers throughout the night. Attentive service and fresh bread rolls. Good portions of octopus, shrimp and salmon. Included salad with tomatoes, olives and iceberg lettuce. While the entrees were well-prepared and fresh, we all found the flavors to be rather bland. Especially, the potatoes, carrots and string beans. read more

Service was decent given that we were a large party but the food was pretty bad. The place needs a little upgrading as well. It looks older and kind of dingy. Website also needs upgrading because you can't find a menu anywhere (I have a little trouble remembering all the foods we tried due to this). The appetizers and soup were better than the entrees. I did enjoy the calamari. The mushrooms not so much (too watery). I ordered the seafood paella and the portion was HUGE. Can probably share one among 3-4 people. But the taste was very bland and the seafood tasted old and not fresh. I asked for hot sauce and the only hot sauce they had was Tabasco which did not help much with the flavor. I love this restaurant... the whole vibe... the amazing Spanish soup getting dumped in your bowl like an endless fountain, the warm crispy Portuguese rolls steaming in the table. I ordered the seafood paella ( which despite what most people say you CAN ruin.) this was perfect though. I ordered the garlic shrimp as well which is always good. This is real deal Spanish food and I will be back. There is a lot of competition in Newark so it is hard to rate it 5 stars especially frequenting Iberia, Fernades, and fornos of Spain most of my life. I have a loyalty to them so don't mind the 4 stars but this place is not to be frowned upon. I will be back... especially for that soup! read more

The lunch specials here are awesome, for $14 I had homemade chicken soup and a huge portion of veal stew. After you are done here you need a Siesta. The bar is always crowded with working men on their lunch break having one too many drinks, before the presumably head back to work. Also there is free indoor parking next door for anybody worried about parking in the Ironbound. But trust me this neighborhood is much better than it's rep. read more

I went here for a friend's birthday and I'll never want to go again. We googled it and got some decent reviews (guess not). Just imagine three NYC stylish dolled up ladies, hair done, makeup done, everything done, and we walk into this place where it felt like EVERYONE was staring. Uncomfortable enough, while we get sat in the corner, everyone else in this fairy decently decorated restaurant was wearing sweatpants, sneakers, or looked like hunters. The workers there are perverted, while one of them kept hitting on my friend, writing hearts all over her dessert and her to-go bag. The appetizer we had was shrimps in a garlic sauce (cooked fairly well) and baked clams. For entree there was a huge page that was screaming paella, all different types, so I figured I'd get it. I give it credit for having huge portions, but the rice wasn't flavored well, the seafood was over cooked and it wasn't bad, but I just had better. Don't get dessert. I ordered it a fake creme brulee (well I guess this is what I get when I order creme brulee from a Spanish restaurant) it tasted spoiled, horrible, and I couldn't even pretend to like it. Too far from my house to go again, too scary of a neighborhood (when you see broken televisions and stolen tires on the side of their building then it's freaking scary) and too uncomfortable for me to want to go again. read more

From the dinner rolls to it's namesake drink, this is was a pretty mediocre experience. We shared some apps - decent, but nothning special - and a pitcher of sangria - also flat and lifeless. The Paella came out in a MASSIVE metal pot. A big tub full of salty, dry food. You can tell the dish was neglected instead of nurtured because the lobster tail was dry and chewy. And can I dispell the rumor that this place is something of a bargain? No, it's not. $10 for an appetizer, $20 for paella, $5 sharing is no steal. Entrees start at 15, so no, this is no secret deal. and now we've got sixteen pounds of leftover sausage and chicken and scallops and clams sitting in the fridge. Just staring at me. Teasing me. I love this place. I go here from time to time. I always order the chorizo which is awesommmme. Then my dad orders shrimp and garlic, he loves it. I'll pass, not a fish eater. Mmm, their chicken in garlic sauce is amazing. I order another thing, but I always forget the name. I call it something else, and that something else is what they don't make. Hence the confusion lol. Their bread is delicious, knowing that it comes right from the bakery across the street. Whenever I'm outside waiting for a table to clear up (most people go in groups, so if you know you live far away and you're going wth a group get together and decide on a time. It's always busy. Oh and there's always a party!) I can smell the fresh bread cooking in the bakery. The people are generally really nice and some don't speak fluent English, so have patience and be as clear as possible. Most do, but sometimes we may get a waiter who isn't fluent in English. They have a mariachi band. (unless you want to tip them, don't look at them. Just keep your head down and keep eating; their music is really good though) The area can be a little scary, but there's definitely no ripped tires and broken windows outside their building?!?!? there's a chained bench because hello you're in that type of neighborhood, just deal with that. The atmosphere from outside is amazing tons of planes every 10 minutes or so fly by. Parking is really hard. If I were you, don't park in their garage. It's very tight and one time my parents parked in there and it was rough getting out. park along the side of the street, no charge. I have nothing bad to say about this restaurant. They always please us and our taste buds. I'm sure we'll continue going for as long as it stays there. Oh one more thing, try their steak. It comes sizzling on this hot stone and it's delicious. One of my all time favorite places to eat in Newark. My go to seafood meal is the fried red snapper. I always appreciate the soup they give you before the meal as well. They have a bar area as well if you are looking for the same quality food with a more casual setting. If you love to watch soccer, definitely recommend watching games here read more

Wow, went back home and got Re-acquainted with an old favorite. Spanish Sangria is not easy to find if you're not from the area. The portions are always more than satisfying, and soup is a ritual. If savory is what you are looking for, Spanish Sangria is where you'll find it. Lots of options, but seafood is what I'd recommend. There are always options and specials off the menu. I always enjoy the Scallops in White Wine Sauce (not typically on the menu), usually accompanied with rice and Spanish fries (kettle chip style), they will also do a shrimp and scallops in white wine if you simply ask for it. If you're from "Down-neck", you would also know to ask for the Clams Casino as an appetizer. Come hungry and enjoy your evening. read more

Went here on a recent Saturday night - Food was outstanding as usual, but the service was atrocious. We were placed in an empty dining room and seemingly forgotten about...Sparing waiter visits and the food took over an hour after we ordered it. After questioning why we were told it was "busy" (the empty dining room would seem to indicate otherwise). Bottom line, don't think I'll be making a return visit to this place anytime soon. This establishment is one you can't miss. Although it takes a little to get someone's attention on a busy Saturday night, you can tell the staff works hard and the kitchen doesn't disappoint. I recommend a casual hang at the bar during the week with the friendly bartenders for some great specials that I noticed change everyday. Seafood is fresh and the owners make sure of it and I am a big judge of it because I sometimes catch my own. I know the quality when I see it. I've eaten in more restaurants Down Neck than I care to count. Growing up in the Ironbound I've had the opportunity to try many of them over the course of many years. If you're looking to get dolled up and go somewhere fancy, go elsewhere. Maybe Fornos (where you'll pay much more and the food is not better) or Iberia on Ferry St. (good food too). I started eating at the SS when it was a bar and a small back room. The food was very good then and you simply couldn't beat the prices. It's still one of the best restaurants in the area and the prices are reasonable. Love the schrimp in garlic and stuffed clams for appetizers. The filet mignon, veal dishes, fish, Paella, Mariscada...very good. Having eaten in MANY of the Newark restaurants (probably as many as anyone) I'd say there are other eateries that may prepare a dish in a way that someone in our dinner party may prefer instead of the Sangria's. To each his own. But we've never had a bad meal here and the wait staff has always been excellent. We've been to Fornos, Iberia, Spain, Casa Vasca, Spanish Tavern, Fernandes Steak House, El Pastor, O Campino, Sol-Mar, Tony Da Caneca's, Don Pepe, etc. (need variety). All good. I've been coming to this this fantastic restaurant for nearly 20 years. The last 2 times here, our waiter disappeared during our meal. Fortunately, after I had to ask, someone took his place. I believe it was the same guy! Seafood Paella was not as good as in years past, Shrimp are much smaller and only 2 scallops in the entire dish. Strip steak was ordered med rare, but served well done. That being said, I will return again with hopes that the service will be better and I will be sure to ask more questions while ordering. read more

The food is great. It's fresh and authentic. The service however is lacking. We had to wave down the waiter. Im not sure why, maybe they are understaffed. Our desserts orders were incorrect. Working class bar with fine dining room, excellent & copious Iberian food. Paella & Mariscada were great, and in the past also had fine chicken / garlic and shrimp/ wine sauce. Busy at lunch and prob weekends but we went from airport at 5ish, had the room to ourselves. Also enjoy the included soups. Yes the neighborhood is kinda grimy but it's Newark; however Ironbound is a safe area. Never heard of a problem with crime there, incl. many at nearby workplace. read more

After 30 years of coming to this restaurant and telling people how great this place was, I find myself in the awkward position of retracting my words and, quite honestly, disappointed in how the owner reacted to criticism about our last visit. This Saturday, January 12th 2019, we decided, like many other riñones before, to order our food and bring it home rather than going to the restaurant as we were tired. A simple paella and chicken francese,nothing fancy, but food that we had ordered so many times before. This time,however, the paella had no taste and the chicken looked as if it was thrown in the pan, coveted with egg batter and sent out, no sauce, no flavor.. My wife, quite upset, contacted the restaurant's owner, just to ask if, by any chance, there had been a change of chefs, hence the change with the food. The owner, rather than showing some concern, stated that there were no changes and that the food was fine. My wife stated that, after all this time, we will probably will not be back, to which the owner replied:" That's OK, other customers will come by".... Very unprofessional!! This place is magnificent i come here regularly and portions and price are excellent. We always get the garlic chicken with bone with rice and fries and it never disappoints me. Other items are just as good my once ordered a paella and they just brought the whole pot out i was amazed that she will get all that food it was very good to take home and use as leftovers at home especially for the price. The sangria is magnificent . All the waiters are very friendly but we always request Jason. On Sunday evening after hearing the NJ Symphony Orchestra at NJPAC, we headed to the Ironbound section of Newark, NJ to a Spanish, Portuguese restaurant called Spanish Sangria. The seafood selections that we had were fresh and well seasoned. The flan for dessert was quite tasty. For the price you can't beat the overall experience at this restaurant. Had a reservation for 6pm for ten people. When we went inside their was no greeter or staff to talk too. I finally found someone who works there and told him we had a reservation for 6pm he asks my name and went to the back. We continued to wait for about another 10 minutes and finally another gentlemen came out and asked my name. I gave it to him again. And still continued to wait. Other people came after us and at this point they start to be seated. After 45 min I went to ask one of the gentlemen how much longer and he told me a few more minutes. Well I didn't get seated until 7 pm. Ordered our food and 3 of the steaks were raw after we asked them to cook it medium. Waiter was friendly, food was pretty good , but overall experience was bad enough not to come back. From the 1 hr wait to be seated despite the reservation, to getting order wrong, forgetting to give us bread , and boxing our to go food in a corona box. read more

First of all, it's in the GHETTO, and my boyfriend is form Newark so we are used to the area, and were very uncomfortable leaving our car parked on the street while we went inside to eat. Very stuffy atmosphere inside. And the food. Oh my god, the food. So. Freaking. Bad. First of all we got the chorizo and the garlic shrimp. I don't know how a spanish restaurant messes up chorizo but they did it. One of my favorite foods and I ate maybe three pieces. The garlic shrimp were fishy and oily. My boyfriend ordered the paella and I ordered the veal with crab meat. Let me say that i have NEVER smelled such a horrid, fishy, disgusting smell come from food EVER. I took one bite of my entree and pushed it to the side. The paella was equally bad. The lobster tail (which they don't even give you an entire one of) was so tough I had to use a STEAK KNIFE to cut it. The rice was watery and gross. My boyfriend also pushed his aside. Basically, we left without eating, and didn't even want to take home any left overs. We thought it would be a better idea just to drive through McDonalds on the way home. We had reservations for last night at 7:30. We arrived about 10 minutes before that. 3 parties that came in after us were sat ahead of us. We stood in the cramped waiting area with my father in law who has brain cancer and was using a walker for OVER AN HOUR. We finally got sat around 8:45 and we were all starving and cranky by this point. My husband and I got mussels as an appetizer. First one tasted good then the 2nd one I had to discreetly remove from my mouth. I know bad shellfish when I taste it and I've been hospitalized because of it in the past. I didn't say anything to my family and then a few minutes later my brother in law spit out a mussel and said "whoa that is a BAD mussel" so I spoke up and told him I had a bad one too and we decided not to try anymore. The server got the owner who came over and decided to argue with me insisting they're fresh. I said "I don't doubt they're fresh but it's nature and sometimes they're just bad no matter what you do and I don't want to risk my health, sometimes one bad one can alter the taste of the whole batch". He reluctantly took them off. My garlic chicken (which arrived an hour and 15 mins after the apps were done) was dried out and hard as a rock. I could barely eat it. Rice pudding dessert was runny and gross I make a better creamy one myself. They also never brought our coffees and I had to call the waiter over about 10 minutes after we finished dessert and tell him "I guess you're not bringing our coffee so I'll take the check". There was also a loud party in the room attached to ours with a DJ blasting music, kids non stop running through our dining area yelling, we couldn't even talk to each other. I am so mad we wasted $200 of hard earned money on the worst mothers day dinner I've ever experienced. I wouldn't go back here if they offered to pay me. read more

The worst experience we have had in 30 years of going here. The place has gone down hill and the service is TERRIBLE! After calling ahead for a reservation and being told it was confirmed, we arrived fifteen minutes early. There was no record of our reservation but we were told the wait would only be ten minutes. 45 minutes later (and 30 minutes after the time of our reservation) we asked how much longer we would be waiting and were responded to with a terrible attitude. "Do you see what's happening here?" was yelled at us by the hostess, who then told us to leave the restaurant for having asking about the wait time. All while open tables sat idly. I will never turn to the restaurant as they clearly do not value potential customers. AVOID THIS poorly run establishment if you want to actually be able to sit down and eat a meal. read more
