First time I have ever stopped here. It is known locally to be haunted apparently ghost hunters stayed one night and felt the presence of spirits. The place definitely needs a good cleaning but... the food yum! Fresh roasted Turkey on the club sandwich! The burgers are hand made Pattie's. Gravy is homemade. Wether they clean it up or not I will be stopping in again in the near future.

A classic story of "don't judge a book by it's cover". From the outside Spanky's looks like an absolutely disaster but I decided to give it a shot based on a recommendation from a friend and I'm glad I did. Once inside the diner, things immediately improve. The restaurant is clean and tidy. The seating consists of tables, booths, and a bar. We seated ourselves and were greeted by our waitress almost instantly. She was friendly and informed us of the daily specials. I only glanced at the lunch portion of the menu but Spanky's offers a good variety of hot and cold sandwiches along with soups and salads. I decided to go with a Tuna sandwich and a cup of Tomato Macaroni soup. My father ordered a hot pork sandwich and was offered a choice of frozen or homemade fries which I've never encountered anywhere else. Why would anybody choose frozen? My soup arrived in about 5 minutes and the rest of the food within 5 minutes of that. Full marks for speed. My soup was very hearty and tasty. The tuna sandwich was a bit sloppy but also quite appetizing. The bread was nice and fresh. The sandwich also came with a side of potato chips. A nice touch. The cost of both meals was $17 and change which I thought was very reasonable. The washroom consists of a single toilet and sink and is a bit cramped but was clean. Overall Spanky's was nice little lunch diner that I would gladly go back to and would recommend. If you're looking for lunch in Massena and can manage to look past the horrible restaurant frontage give it a shot.

Staff is friendly and attentive! Food is 7/10 very consistent, prices aren't horrible but not a deal either. I would recommend!

Came here at 7:30 and the open sign was already off. Pretty sure they close at 8? Late night shift must be lazy. Not happy

Very nice atmosphere and friendly waiting staff. Great omelets and good burgers. If you have visitors to Massena, take them here.

Was there in Potsdam for a meeting and stopped in on a Thursday evening. Even though it's a butcher…read moreshop and called Hoof and Horn, I actually went in for vegetarian options noted on Yelp. The space is minimalist and gives old fashioned turn of the 20th century vibes. There's obviously a lot of pride and a commitment to local foods here. We ordered the night's cocktail special the New York Sipper -yum- the Raquette salad, two of the small (not small at all) plates that were on special that night: the creamy barley risotto and the butternut squash and mushroom parpadella. As a main course, we shared the house-made mushroom burger, savory and flavorful. Everything was fantastic, with many earthy, fresh and delicious flavors and a variety of textures. We clearly ordered too much food, since the small plates were actually full portion-size. Skipped dessert, although the special was tiramisu. They're under a lot of pressure to compete in Potsdam, but they're doing something that shows classical training and a commitment to quality. Several Finger Lakes wines on the list. Prices are astonishingly low for such an excellent meal. Note: tip is included and there were no "lighter" meats like poultry or fish on the menu. Thus the great vegetarian options, I assume.

Then one day at work everyone was getting lunch here and asked if I wanted to get in on the order and I was like sure, why not, and was pretty amazed by their choices on the menu. Ended up trying/getting the Banh Mi and was pleasantly surprised this came from a "butcher shop" but I learned that day that they are so much more. This place has awards, small town feel, great and hearty foods, friendly staff and they are a butcher shop that you can get some pretty good meats and don't forget Weiner Wednesday!!!! They also have some pretty good salads; their maple vinaigrette is darn good!!! So don't be afraid...come on in and get a sandwich either to sit down or to go.

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school.
