Was there in Potsdam for a meeting and stopped in on a Thursday evening. Even though it's a butcher shop and called Hoof and Horn, I actually went in for vegetarian options noted on Yelp. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space is minimalist and gives old fashioned turn of the 20th century vibes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There's obviously a lot of pride and a commitment to local foods here. We ordered the night's cocktail special the New York Sipper -yum- the Raquette salad, two of the small (not small at all) plates that were on special that night: the creamy barley risotto and the butternut squash and mushroom parpadella. As a main course, we shared the house-made mushroom burger, savory and flavorful. Everything was fantastic, with many earthy, fresh and delicious flavors and a variety of textures. We clearly ordered too much food, since the small plates were actually full portion-size. Skipped dessert, although the special was tiramisu. They're under a lot of pressure to compete in Potsdam, but they're doing something that shows classical training and a commitment to quality. Several Finger Lakes wines on the list. Prices are astonishingly low for such an excellent meal. Note: tip is included and there were no "lighter" meats like poultry or fish on the menu. We stopped at Hoof and Horn for lunch during our recent visit to Potsdam. My two kids both ordered the special of the day, a short rib ramen, while my wife chose the chicken salad sandwich. I ordered their take on a French dip sandwich. The food was good overall, certainly enjoyable and well-prepared, but nothing really stood out as particularly memorable. While I appreciated the friendly service, the overall experience didn't leave a strong impression on me. Not going to lie...first time I saw/heard this place I thought it was just a butcher shop. Then I heard they had sandwiches and thought it made sense as they were a "butcher shop". Then one day at work everyone was getting lunch here and asked if I wanted to get in on the order and I was like sure, why not, and was pretty amazed by their choices on the menu. Ended up trying/getting the Banh Mi and was pleasantly surprised this came from a "butcher shop" but I learned that day that they are so much more. This place has awards, small town feel, great and hearty foods, friendly staff and they are a butcher shop that you can get some pretty good meats and don't forget Weiner Wednesday!!!! As a vegetarian for over 25 years, I wasn't sure about trying a place called "butcher," but H&H blew me away! The menu has plenty of delicious meat-free options, and is clearly labeled which dishes are vegetarian and gluten-free, which I really appreciate. The food is incredible--every dish has amazing flavor and creative combinations. The tapas menu always includes a bunch of great vegetarian choices, and it's really fun to go with my meat-eating partner and friends since everyone gets to try different dishes. The risotto is my favorite; the chef switches it up throughout the year, and it's always amazing. This was my first time eating here and the experience was top notch. The staff were very friendly, and knew a lot of their customers by name. The food was also amazing! We have been traveling to Potsdam NY since the 1980's sending off and bringing home college students. Potsdam does not have a wealth of good eating places as many may know. However, on our most recent trip there we were delighted to dine at this small but intimate restaurant that opened just about a year ago. We found the dinner menu to satisfy just about anyone's pallet including folk with certain food allergies. Selections of red meat, chicken and fish were ordered for 5 people. To the table's delight the food was delicious, quite ample and well prepared and presented. Now here is the remarkable part. Because of the winter weather 4 of the 5 tables canceled out. Yet these folk stayed open for us and were not only attentive but gracious in thier hosting. We were tired and hungry after a rather dicey drive into town. Their reception of us and the good food were just what we needed during our visit to town. I would highly recommend them. read more
