DON'T GO TO BUTTERWORTH! I had a major spine surgery in 22. Ive had 4 back surgeries in total, all at spectrum. First 3 went well. No complaints, they took care of me fine. The 4th (the most complicated one.) was a total horror. I woke up after 8 hours of surgery and the nurses at Butterworth wouldn't give me any pain medication. When my doctor finally came in after the second day he ordered me Norco. I STILL never got any medication. The nurse would come in singing..."i have your pain pill"! Only to look in the small cup she held and see one Tylenol 500. I am CONVINCED the entire opium epidemic comes right from Butterworth Hospital. Not only do they take your meds when you're in dire need of them, after you finally go home, the surgeon offers to have your scripts sent to you via mail because you may live a ways away. Those never come either. When I ask about the mailed scripts, they tell me i filled them in the Meijer Pharmacy right below Butterworth Hospital. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I wouldn't have them mailed just to drive all the way back there to fill them. I was labeled a junkie or something because i kept complaining about not getting pain any relief. I have NEVER been addicted to ANYTHING, not even coffee! And i have PTSD over that surgery and the pain i was in and the nasty way i was treated at Spectrum Health Butterworth. Now i have to have a 5th surgery. I will go to Saint Mary's in hopes they treat me a little better. I'm scared to death. read more

I am so disappointed in our Healthcare. Are surrounding hospitals are no more than a med center and they report to Spectrum. You never get to see a doctor unless you go to the main hospital. And they are so busy you can't see a doctor there either. Then you get a bill and they code it as I saw a specialist when I saw a PA physician assistant. My doctor is in network. But they're saying this PA is a specialist in Billing me for a specialist. I have called five times and still have not gotten it resolved. This is affecting my credit and I am getting nowhere. I paid my copay at the time of visit. Spectrum is blaming Humana insurance company and Humana is blaming Spectrum. A complete runaround. I asked to talk to a supervisor, of course I don't get one. They say they're taking care of it and it doesn't happen. So completely frustrated with the care. read more

Sadly so many involved in the health industry are nothing but vampires preying on vulnerability of most of their patients. I recently had a colonoscopy and was ASSURED that there were no out of pocket expenses for screenings like this. I received my benefits explanation letter from Blue Cross that show my bill for this "paid in full" as it is federally mandated to be. A few weeks later I get a bill from spectrum staying I owe them $984.00. A THIRD OF THE COST OF THE PROCEDURE. Overall, the reason they don't get a worst star rating or better is because they do the minimum of care and the maximum of tests. To date I still have Sinusitis causing me issues including Asthma and various other issues. I have spent hundreds of dollars and a great amount of time on tests and well bullshit just to deal with the simple issue of a Sinus infection. Fore For Eight months I have had this every test says I have Sinusitis but not One DOCTOR seems to look at it as a cause. Now I have developed an Asthmatic condition, and I can expect it will be ignored for the next few months because it won't promote more test and visits to specialists. Over 1,500 spent so far... all I got was a one script and a blood test done. I have two insurances and paid balance off out of my own pocket but I keep getting billed with a new balance number always present. I won't go deep into specifics but this place is terrible compared to my dr's and systems I had while living in Las Vegas. I have no trust or faith whatsoever as I was trying to establish a relationship for my care needs. I guess I'm screwed since spectrum seems to have the monopoly here in Michigan. People are just another billable number and health concerns, treatment optional requests fall upon deaf ears. They have one mode and just want the $$$$$ You don't matter when the dust settles! Beware or go into debt during the learning curve. They wouldn't even review my prior 15 yrs of documented medical history... that's insane to ignore especially if you want to provide a patient with a proper protocol of ongoing care. This place is amazing. So my primary care Dr. who is not a Dr. but a PA(could not get into a real DR). has left. She had asked to see me to follow up on some outstanding diagnosis back in May. The earliest she could see me was July, two months. Now she has quit and they call to reschedule me to see someone else on August 25th. So, early May to August 25...3 and a half months to get an appointment that THEY asked me for. Thank God for the internet and Webmd, or who knows. So I hear if you live in Canada you have to wait for an appointment...how about that.... read more

Butterworth Hospital ER is awful! Mistreated and blown off by staff. Post operative pain and spasms. Refused to admit me or help me. The ER Dr David E Hoffelder is not only incompetent, but actually dangerous. Instead of helping me he asked about my bowel habits, told me to cover up and said I had high blood pressure. Wrong! Duh! Horrible pain and spasms will increase anyone's blood pressure! Never had high blood pressure in my life. Total mismanagement! They are dangerous! Don't go there. They will treat you like a crazy animal! I'm reporting this and I hope he loses his license. Written by a RN who knows better. Also, the labs did my blood work said the labs were inaccurate. He didn't try to repeat anything he just sent me home. What a moron! read more

My wife was seen at the Lemmon Holton Cancer building. Someone checks her in. A tech of some kind does a mammogram, another tech or somebody does some kind of imaging (I still don't know what). The tech goes off and comes back and says "everything' is fine you can go. For all we knew the janitor reviewed the results. It wasn't much different than if you just did away with the people and put in vending machines with instructions. Certainly can't trust anything they said or did. I have a female friend who works at Spectrum downtown that is being put in a potentially dangerous position, not to mention the inconvenience of riding a city bus. In fact the bus drops her off two blocks from her car and after her late shift, must walk downtown streets alone in the dark!!! I fear for her safety! Spectrum shocks me!! They are putting their employees at risk! They are cancelling the Spectrum Shuttle bus. Now my friend must ride the Rapid bus with the public!!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING SPECTRUM??? We have gone at least 5-7 times to the Spectrum ER in GR since May this year. The ER room is a bit of a Zoo. They do not enforce distance between the patients, and on three occasions we have been there with people listening to their cell phones full blast. No one in the staff tells them anything, nor there are any signs not to do so. If your condition is not serious think twice of going there, especially on Sunday nights and Mondays. read more

I have been seeing doctors at Spectrum Health for a condition and I have to say that everyone is very professional and a pleasure to talk with. The wait times at the health center are minimal. My primary doctor (Dr. Quinn) is always a pleasure to speak with and she pays close attention to my concerns. The Spectrum MyChart Portal is easy to use and communications are prompt and understandable. I am 58 years old and I can honestly say that this is by far the best medical center that I have ever been to. read more

From insurance fraud to medical negligence and their continual confirmation that they "uphold" their ethical code to patients, which is somewhat of a joke. The nurses don't care for their patients. I'm seeing all over Facebook that who's been to this hospital that's was looking to be cared for from these people wasnt full filled. I had to deal with bad care here myself. I was in an accident last summer, cuts, 2degree burn, dirt all over me, glass all over in my hair. Dr Dylan Drummond of Ross Medical School works for Spectrum Health Hospice. Let me tell you the truth about this doctor. I have an elderly mother on hospice and dehydrated. I have suspected that my mother has a Urinary Tract Infection because she has all of the classic symptoms. After being told these symptoms Dr Drummond would not give my mother an antibiotic. The doctor wanted proof. Like a fresh urine sample. No urine was in my mother's bladder. So the Hospice nurse came back the next day to collect proof for this doctor. Very little urine was collected. But the small amount that was collected was red with lots of blood in the urine. I asked the Hospice nurse, "what would make my mother have blood in her urine"? The Hospice nurse replied, "a U.T.I". The urine sample was given to the lab to see what kind of bacteria was in my mother's urine. Only to find out I have to wait until Friday for the culture to grow before Dr. Dylan Drummond will help my mother. Dr. Dylan Drummond lacks empathy for his patients. I would bet that if this were Dr. Dylan Drummond's own mother, she would already have the antibiotic to help her with her painful and bloody U.T.I. Can you believe that a BAD doctor like Dr. Dylan Drummond is allowed to practice medicine in the United States? By the way, where is Ross Medical School anyways? Oh, it's a foreign medical school, because he wasn't good enough to get into medical school here in the States. It's bad doctor's like Dr. Dylan Drummond that cost us all. read more

Absolutely disgusted with THIS HOSPITAL & lack of care & bedside manner .... I was taken to Spectrums Big Rapids Hospital I was treated for accidental overdose bc of my confusion from being so illl. The Hospital kept me for 3 nites & denied me any of my daily medication. It was obvious I was very ill bc my Pulse Oxygen was measuring at 81-85 %, I was struggling to breath & experienced extreme fatigue moving around in the hospital bed. The nite female Nurse assistant was extremely rude to me & yelling at me to move faster when using bathroom & washing my hands. I was given oxygen & it was hard for me to use the nose piece & asked for the mask & yelled at me to just deal with the nose piece. I pretended I was better on Saturday 02/01 just so I could go home. At my doctors appointment it discovered I had double pneumonia, the aspiration pneumonia was 2nd one from the hospital. I was taken back in the hospital (NOT BIG RAPIDS) at Gerber Hospital Spectrum Health in Fremont & treated for both of the pneumonia's. I'm so disgusted with BIG RAPIDS HOSPITAL! I'm not a confrontational person & tend to give the benefit of doubt for errors. I can not give BIG RAPIDS HOSPITAL the benefit of the doubt, there is no excuse for such inappropriate behavior from hospital staff including doctors. . read more

Really inconsistent policy on Covid vaccines. My husband & I registered for the vaccine at the same time, and I got an appt, but he did not. When I received my 2nd vaccine, I saw people half my age getting their 1st, so they weren't out of doses at that time. We both qualify by age, but he is at higher risk than me due to his older age, work as an essential non-healthcare worker, and his co-morbid health conditions. He waited weeks & then called to ask why he still had no appt. They lied & said he marked "no" that he didn't want an appt. Yeah, I don't think so. They had sent a text confirmation that he's on the list. Also, why would you complete the questionnaire if you didn't want one? It's a disgrace. read more

What an absolutely horrible experience. I had to leave my 90 year old mother tonight in tears. My mother had lower back surgery yesterday. I always stay with my mother since I have been a registered nurse for 36 years and have cared for my mother since my father died when I was 15 years old. I was also a registered nurse at Spectrum for 23 years which I have always been proud of until tonight! After surgery yesterday I stayed with my mom. No one said anything I was asked if I needed a blanket or pillow. I help my mom at night because she gets confused and cannot hear without her hearing aides. During the day I get her cleaned up, change her linens as needed, set up her food and help her. I also communicate what is going on with her care. I make sure she is receiving the correct medications and they do not fluid overload her since she is a patient at the Advanced Heart Failure Clinic. Tonight I was told I could not stay. I was completely caught off gaurd and did not understand why. I was told by the charge nurse I posed a risk! I told her I am fully vaccinated for Covid-19 as well as my mother. I care for my mother. I also did not understand because at the current time the Covid rates are lower than they were since the Covid-19 pandemic started in March of 2020. I asked to talk to a superviser but was told the superviser would not come to talk with me. My mother's floor nurse was going to hook up her IV which had been heplocked for over 24 hours. No one was even keeping intake or output on my mom. The floor nurse said she was going to run the IV at 100cc's per hour. I told her my mom was drinking fine and if she ran the IV at 100cc/hr she would be in Congestive Heart Failure by morning. The charge nurse agreed to run the IV at 10cc's but also refused to get a physician order for 10cc's per hour. She never told me why it was necessary to even hook her up to fluids especially since she was drinking orally fine. The charge nurse had 3 security gaurds outside the room as I got my mom ready for bed. Brushing her teeth etc. The nurse and charge nurse did help her to the toilet with her walker as I changed her draw sheet and arranged her pillows. They did not know how to pivot her into bed even though I was trying to explain how and as a result she twisted her post surgical back which left her in immense pain. I did wait until she got her Tylenol and tucked her in as she cried. I cannot even tell you how upset I was and how upset my 90 year old mother was. What a horrible, horrible experience. read more

Nursing staff can be hit or miss. I arrived several times, all the nurses at the station, and not a single one had noted that my grandfather's oxygen had been knocked off for an hour, all the alarms going off. The man had pneumonia along with COPD, and his pulse ox had dropped to 78. We've had some good, competent staff and also some of the laziest who don't realize how far up the chain of command the family of a beloved grandfather will go. Be prepared to be your own or a family member's advocate. read more

Don't bother getting an estimate for services. My estimate was $340 and they billed me for close to $1,000. Now they are telling me I have 120 days to pay it or they turn me over to collections. I have been a victim of hospitals scamming people to recoup the money they lost in covid. This organization makes me SICK. The message was the same. We wont help you and we will change our stories until you go away. I have had multiple surgeries at multiple hospitals in Michigan including cancer twice. No other hospital or medical facility was as completely unwilling to help as Spectrum billing. My insurance company actually complained to me about them. read more

Spectrum Health assimilated nearly all of the local mom n' pop family doctors. These local family doctors were not allowed to send patients to specialist doctors in the Spectrum Network (I.e. make referrals) unless these doctor actually joined Spectrum Health. Spectrum indirectly coerced all of the local doctors to become affiliated with Spectrum Health, otherwise they couldn't refer their patients for surgeries, prostate exams, specialist, etc? All of the local mom n' pop family doctors had to join the Spectrum network. This is unfortunate, because these small office doctors were responsive and honest. Now most of them have been consolidated and replaced with a system built by Spectrum- purely based upon extreme efficiency and greed. The spectrum health offices refuse to help you with any insurance related questions. My old family doctor earned his pay and always helped me find a solution and worked with my insurance. Spectrum health, however, offers you a "take it or leave it" approach. When people say Grand Rapids has a large medical industry, albeit true, one must also realize it's also one big oligopoly. Spectrum Health, not to mention the insurance companies, are the epitome of what's wrong with today's healthcare crisis. I have been playing phone tag with multiple departments of Spectrum trying to reschedule a COVID-19 test. I had to call to cancel the test, then I was told to reschedule the appointment through the patient portal website, but the option isn't even there anymore. I called later in the day to for help rescheduling through the portal and was then told that I have to get re-screened through the portal, which I can't do because its not an option in the portal. Now I've been on hold with customer service for 20 minutes. The reps were very nice but this whole operation is clearly lacking organization. I try to be lenient with healthcare providers at this time but I really think that it shouldn't be taking me 3 hours to reschedule something this urgent. read more

Doctors gave my brother the wrong medications at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. Now he is on heart pills due to the error they made. They said he is now considered a critical patient with Congested heart failure and he needs an Lvad. Numerous of times they tried to get my brother to become an organ donor and agree to Pallative care. read more

Outstanding! Received a double lung transplant within 5 months of listing at Spectrum Health. This is after languishing at U of M and Cleveland Clinic for years. I left them both when I learned Spectrum Health did lung transplants . They literally saved my life. In comparing Spectrum Health with the two other "transplant centers," I found Spectrum Healths processes and systems, business operations, patient conveniences, quality of physicians/surgeons, and patient communications to be heads and shoulders above any hospital I've been in. Plus, the place is immaculate. And most impressive are the employees - Professional, polite, responsive, and wearing smiles. Spectrum Health lung transplant program is most impressive (well, maybe not so much the food)! Highly, highly recommended. Update: Just red all the other reviews. Very shocked! Perhaps people don't know how good they've got it with SH. Go to U of M or Cleveland Clinic and you will run back to SH just as fast as you can! read more

Someone named Jolene helped me but she was abrasive and unhelpful. I had not properly fasted for my PET test and she told me "sorry about your luck" but we will have to reschedule you. I understand the rescheduling but she was rude and unhelpful in rescheduling. She had contacted me to set up the test and her information at the test was not the same as what she told me. read more

The treatment you receive will be ok however the billing will be crooked. I was a research patient for five years. It was very clear that I was to have no cost for my participation. This caused a fight on my part from the very beginning. Now that I have left the study and had the device removed they only respond with you are no longer a part of the study. They will lie to you at every turn. Be very careful and do not trust them to do what they say. read more

This review pertains to the billing department for Spectrum Health. Over the past few months we have had difficulties with basic billing issues that one would think a major health system could handle. First, I had an issue with them not complying with specific written instructions to bill my health insurer as primary payor after a car accident. In addition, their online automated system for paying a bill DOES NOT WORK, and despite repeated lengthy calls to their low-performing phone reps, nothing has been done about it. Even called Patient Relations. A month later, and still no fix. Looks like they want you to use snail mail and a paper check, because there's no way in Hades those phone reps are getting a credit card number from me. Please also note that the website address printed on the bills -- spectrum health.org/payyourbill -- ends up defaulting to something called "mymedicalme" once you hit the pay button. Then, it stops working and gets you into a loop by continually asking you to "change amount." I looked up "mymedicalme," and it appears to be a billing company that has terrible reviews posted elsewhere online, including reviews for the website problem. (When you send in the payment by mail, it goes to Chicago - must be the same crummy billing company with the nonworking website). Another reviewer here on yelp nailed it when he said, "the billing department is downright awful." Should we also say that whoever Spectrum has hired to do its billing is downright awful? Look your bill over carefully, make sure they billed your insurance correctly, don't bother trying to pay online, and pray that you don't have to call these people unless you have lots of free time on your hands. You'll need it. UPDATE: just paid another medical provider online. It literally took about a minute, and that's including a short online survey asking how the experience went.
