These are the elevated Moments of our lives. Hours, days, and weeks are invested into planning…read morethem. And, of course, when the day arrives -- life moves very fast. Even with all the planning in the world, like everything else where large numbers of people are involved and excitement levels are high -- improvisation better be on the menu too. Even if it is not needed.
I've been around long enough, I've planned large family affairs in the past.. and I knew what was coming the day of our wedding. To me, it's one part blueprint, one part 3-D chess, and one part joyous variety. All played out at a volume of 11 (if you're a "This is Spinal Tap" fan, you understand the "11" reference! :)) I'm also a film producer, so I'm pretty versed on the complexities of filming any live event.
I had these conversations early with Rick... and I knew immediately, he got it. He not only got it, but he welcomed any challenges with very thoughtful solutions, opportunities to be artistic, and making sure I knew he would be more than capable handling the set pieces and moving parts.
Rick and Gavin far exceeded expectations. Period.
As a technician, Rick's skill-set seemed flawless. He knows his craft. That's a given. But the rest? The rest was nothing short of artistry. Now, also given, our venue is something of a fantasy. Our home is situated part-way up the hills of Malibu, with sweeping views of the Pacific, the mountains, and a property loaded with natural landscape opportunities.
Our affair was intimate, including Bride & Groom's brothers and sisters, children, grandchild, nephews and nieces, the Bride's Mom, and over a dozen vendors (caterers, Rabbi & wife, musicians, and photographers). All in, around 46 of us. There was something of a Timeline (the "blueprint"); a mix of family members meeting for the first time, and a party with several moving pieces ("3-D chess"); and a stellar sunset over the ocean ("variety" galore!)
I told Rick, yes, we gotta get the traditional Family Photos, Bride prepping, First Look, Ceremony, 1st Dance, and Cake Cutting. Even a small posse of friends "crashing" the party, late in the affair. Otherwise, you have carte blanche "cinema verite" to film this event! Those words uttered to an artist are like being handed a pair of real working wings! And with a guy like Rick -- it is complete artistic freedom. Like I mentioned, I'm a film/tv/commercial producer, so I have a pretty good idea immediately if a crafts-person can handle such freedom. I monitored his work for like the first 10 minutes of our event -- and then never had to give it another thought.
I am very, very visually oriented -- and I was confident from right outta the gate that night, that Rick and Gavin were literally, figuratively going to rise to the occasion.
Like I said, these are the elevated Moments of our lives? Rick & Gavin rose TO the Moment and then soared around it and above it ... capturing every wonderful scene within The Moment.
I've only seen a sampling of their captures. But what I have seen has knocked me right out of my Producer's chair. And I was the Groom, only one part of the subject in this beautiful affair.
Rick has an amazing eye for creativity and detail; and he saw things and moments we didn't even imagine. Would I recommend this guy? What do you think? Unabashedly, YES.
