Wow, I've never had so much fun in my life! That is not a true statement, but it is certainly the…read morecase for this year. The name Fun Forest is a good one: you will have fun! This is not something for people with vertigo, or the faint of heart, as even the easiest courses are taking place high up in the sky, between the green leafs of some wonderful trees. Also, it's a good thing if you are reasonably fit... Before the start, you are asked to fill out a form with your personal details, and you need to put your signature there as well... I guess by doing that you are ok with the small print. After a short introduction to the gear and how to use it, you are sent off into the sky. There are 9 courses to choose from, ranging from easy to hard. My personal favorites were 8 and 9... the rest seemed too easy (but can be used to get used to how everything works) I am writing this "the day after", and 2 things I notice: I still have a big grin on my face, that's how much fun it was! And I feel every muscle in my body... seriously! So I need to give 5 stars. This is something you need to do with your friends or colleagues! Check their website, they are always busy, so you need to make a reservation ahead of time. [update, a few days later]My arms are still sore. And I still have a huge grin on my face. Seriously. If you like fun, you need to do this. Period! Oh, and bring gloves (like the gloves you would use with fitness)... ropes and cables baby! Oh, and for the ladies: schedule your manicure the day after... not before :)

I haven't been to the zoo in a very, very long time, and my decision to visit this one was a bit of…read morea surprise. My plane arrived early in the day, so I got to my hotel well before the room was ready. I was able to stash my luggage in the housekeeping area until check-in, but what's to do with myself for five hours? Enter Artis. Located just had a block from my hotel, this was a natural choice. It's probably not exactly what you have in mind when you think of a zoo. Instead, it seems more like a giant, beautifully-maintained park full of gardens that happens to contain animal exhibits, a planetarium, playgrounds, and fun interactive things for kiddos and the young at heart. (I am DELIGHTED that the tulips are still going strong.) As soon as you enter the park, you pass through some absolutely lovely flowerbeds, complete with benches for basking in their beauty. From there, you have your choice: there are so many things to see and do! In addition to the habitats that have multiple layers of fencing (and/or moats, and/or electrical fences, and/or signs warning about sharp beaks, teeth, and claws--I'm looking at you, jaguar and griffin vulture), there are some habitats that let you get up close to the animals, too. There's a lemur zone, where the lemurs lounge in trees just next to the path. There are indoor areas where you can walk right through a primate habitat or bird habitat. There's a butterfly habitat! It's a real treat, and everywhere you go, there are helpful people ready to tell you the funny story about how a bad taxidermy job got the emperor tamirin its name or point out the adorable Pygmy marmoset hanging out right next to you. It really is a wonderful place, ideal for kids and adults, groups and singles, and anyone who loves nature. It's a really nice group of guests--everyone is kind, and people are happy to point out the bird that is hiding behind the bush or the frog that is in that rolled-up leaf, and the youngest guests get super excited when you point out the massive walking stick or the capybara that is taking a nap right next to the fence. I got lots of steps in and enjoyed every minute of it. Absolutely recommend.

Artis Zoo completely surprised me in the best way and ended up being one of my favorite experiences…read morein Amsterdam. From the moment you walk in, it feels less like a typical zoo and more like a beautifully designed park that just happens to be filled with animals. The grounds are stunning, with wide walking paths, old trees, and historic buildings that give it a really unique charm you don't usually get at zoos. The enclosures are thoughtfully done, and you can tell there's a real focus on animal care and creating natural environments. There's a great mix of animals too, from the big, iconic ones to smaller, more unique species that are just as interesting to watch. What really stood out was how peaceful it felt. Even with other visitors around, it never felt chaotic or overcrowded, which made it easy to take your time and actually enjoy each area. It's the kind of place where you can wander for hours without realizing how much time has passed. If you're visiting Amsterdam, I can't recommend Artis enough. It's the perfect mix of relaxing, interesting, and genuinely enjoyable -- whether you're into animals or just want a beautiful place to spend a few hours.

Jewish Or Not - Put This At The Top Of Your List…read more.... The Jewish community in Amsterdam has a long and illustrious history dating back at least to the late 1400s when Sephardic Jews from Portugal and Spain sought refuge from the Inquisition. This handsome museum is dedicated to making information about the community accessible to residents of The Netherlands as well as visitors to the country. The museum is on the site of 4 former synagogues and highlights collections based on 4 themes: Traditions and customs, religious holidays, daily life and history of the local Jewish people. The scope of information and material will certainly open your eyes and probably your heart. My group of 3 tourists from California joined several other people from the US for a tour led by local guide extraordinaire, Naomi Koopmans. We spent an hour at the neighboring Portuguese Synagogue followed by 2+ hours at the museum. You can literally spend a day at the museum. One of the highlights was a walk through the Holocaust Memorial outside the building. There's plenty of room to sit and contemplate the lives of local residents lost to the madness of the Nazis. Every city should be as fortunate as Amsterdam to have an institution as worthwhile as this Jewish Museum.

Imagine. A museum…read moreis created in 1932 to showcase Jewish history, religion, culture and customs in Amsterdam's Jewish Quarter. Eight years later, on May 10, 1940, The Netherlands is invaded by Nazi Germany. Within a week, the Dutch army surrenders. Of the 210,000 Dutch victims of WWII, 102,000 are Jews who are murdered during the Holocaust. It is 3/4 of the Jewish population of the Netherlands. Following the Nazi occupation, the museum was forced to close. Much of its original collection lost. In 1955, it reopened. It moved to its current location in 1987 occupying a square of previously unconnected abandoned synagogues in the Jewish Quarter across from the Portuguese Synagogue. Today, the four former synagogues showcase collections based on different themes. Jewish traditions and customs. Religious holidays. Daily life. History of the Jews from 1600 to the 1890s. The Holocaust. Interesting to see the Amsterdam Machzor written in Cologne in 1250. How did it survive all these years? Why did Sephardic Jews from Portugal settled in Amsterdam in 1600? See the Rintel Menorah donated to the Great Synagogue by Sarah Rintel in the 1750s. It is over a meter tall and a meter and a half wide. Visit the cafe for a taste of Dutch Jewish cuisine. The fish cake sandwich served on a seeded challah bread was delicious. Grab a few biscuits from the glass jars to go with your coffee or hot tea. Admission is part of the Joods Cultureel Kwartier ticket for 30 euros. It is also included in the I Amsterdam Card. Single museum tickets are also available for 20 euros. It is sad to think how this was once a thriving Jewish community that was devastated by the Holocaust. The Joods Historic Museum Complex is the only museum in The Netherlands dedicated to telling the history, customs and religion of the Jewish people.
