Me and my family spotted this mural by pure coincidence when driving around the Shelby park area and one of my daughter said "is that Patrick from spongebob". So naturally we had to pull over and take some photos. Overall very cool piece that will be enormously popular with the youth and probably even the millennials he grew up on the popular show spongebob. I know my kids loved it. Follow the Yellow Path [Louisville KY]…read more We originally thought of just visiting Muhammad Ali's gravesite at Cave Hill Cemetery but when the security personnel at the gate gave us a map of the cemetery we saw that Colonel Sanders's gravesite was also in this same location. The founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) has his final resting place right in the heart of the Cave Hill Cemetery. From the main entrance, at the corner of Baxter Ave and E Broadway, we followed the road into the cemetery for 1.5 miles. Follow the solid yellow line (the map will show the color yellow route). The line ends at Col. Sanders grave in Section 33 right on the road. Colonel Sanders was the most beloved gentleman in Kentucky and holds a significant place in American Culture. His grave was marked by a bust that was created by his daughter Margaret. He was 90 when he passed away in 1980. It was a nice, unique and memorable experience. Review #3907

Located in downtown Shelbyville near the county courthouse, this marker points out the history of a…read morestructure that no longer exists. It sure sounds like quite the place. The marker reads, "Established in 1859 by George A. Armstrong and was known for its good food and lodgings. Guerrilla leader Ed Terrell stopped here briefly, May 26, 1866. Attempting to escape, he was mortally wounded nearby. Brigadier General Henry H. Denhardt was slain here, Sept. 20, 1937. When the hotel was destroyed by fire on February 7, 1944, the owners decided not to rebuild." There is street parking along US-60 and several parking lots in the area. Sons of Liberty sculpture is a large and impressive statue sculpted of what appears to be…read morefrontiersman located off museum row In downtown Louisville. The statue itself sits outside of the sons of Liberty building which if I'm being honest I never paid much attention to until stopping to appreciate this well done sculpture. It's across the street from the slugger museum and next to the science center so maybe that's why it's often overlooked. Overall pretty cool piece and very well done. I'm curious to learn more about the origins and subject matter so I'll indeed research it further one day soon.

Stopped by the Captain William Shannon Landmark while passing through town and ended up…read moreappreciating it more than I expected. It's a simple monument, but once you read into it, you realize how important William Shannon was to the founding of the area he actually donated land that helped establish Shelbyville back in the 1790s. The marker itself isn't anything flashy, so don't expect a big attraction or anything interactive. But if you enjoy local history, it's worth a quick stop. It gives you a real sense of how early settlements were formed and the role individuals played in shaping towns like this. I'd say it's a solid quick visit nothing you go out of your way for, but definitely a nice historical touch if you're already in the area.

I began working on the edges of Middletown almost 20 years ago, and back then there was nothing…read moremuch in Middletown that stood out other than a few local shops and cafes on Old Main Street. I also knew of Middletown and Hite Elementary, plus Eastern HS - all good schools. Now, Middletown looks different. I still work nearby and now I live just a couple of stop lights away. It continues to be a good place to shop local on Old Main, including Prickly Pear, Judy's Consignment and shops in the buildings once used as the first grocery store, or post office. Their city hall building also has a small walking circle and tables to enjoy lunch outside. A few local cafes have also remained, such as Alley Cat Cafe. During the fall they host a weekend fair, shutting down the street and shooting off fireworks. For Christmas they light the path with lights. Getting back on Shelbyville Rd, this area has popped with new businesses and restaurants. Most are chains but some are local. Check out the Cheddar Box, Paul's Fruit Market and Havana Rumba. Getting Target and Walmart in Middletown truly changed things. Nothing had been there! Now you'll find things to do and eat all the way to Gene Snyder (and beyond!) - House of Boom, Planet Fitness, Cyclebar, Club Pilates, Feeders Supply and more. Middletown is becoming a popular spot for families to purchase a home, or for new businesses to move in.
