For those of us in the know, 'rice and three' is about as clear a business name as you can get for a curry café! The pricing here is 3.50-5.30GBP depending on whether all or none of your three chosen curries are vegetarian. Rice was A-OK, as was the fresh tandoor chapati. And I'm starting to realise the importance of serving fresh chapati or naan on a basket rather than a plate - put a slice of fresh toast on a plate to see how one soggy the downside becomes and you will get my point! As a Muslim-owned place, vegetarian choices on the bain marie are as usual playing second fiddle to the 'main dishes'. However, red kidney beans were one choice when I visited, with my other two choices being channa and spinach (from tinned spinach). There was also a potato curry, and I see online references to a Friday aubergine curry. All of what I had was OK, but I continue to feel various gripes with curry café offerings - not enough vegetarian choice, generic sauces as opposed to a feeling of the component fresh ingredients shining through, and heartburn for the rest of the afternoon from the chili powder. However, this is a tight ship as curry cafés go. It seems to be a lively Arab hangout for everyone from young dating couples to grandparents. It's clean, including plenty of toilets (each with lota!) upstairs. Maybe I will go back on a Friday for aubergine curry. Maybe if you like meat kebabs and curries or are Muslim in Bolton this could be a regular place for you. Good luck, Rice N Three!

The kebabs are always great value for money (in fact the Big Taste Special and the Chef's Grill could easily be shared between 2 people) you have the choice of pitta or naan, and they usually send your meats and salad in separate containers too which is a nice touch - there's nowt worse than warm, soggy lettuce on a kebab! What's also nice is that when they've cooked the chicken/lamb they always cut it through to make sure it's done properly - also makes it easier to make up your kebab as the pieces are smaller! The pizzas are really tasty, always have plenty of toppings and cheese on and are always piping hot. Really good for a "kebab shop pizza." They also do lots of other things; cheesy chips are always a favourite, they do both a vegetarian and a meat (chicken) samosa (portion of 4) both of which are lovely, onion rings - which go great with their garlic mayo, and the best jacket spuds around. The potato is chopped up so your filling is not just plonked in the middle or over the top, but it's kinda all mixed through, so you get a bit of everything with every bite. My absolute favourite thing though are the burgers - the Bacon Cheese Burger to be precise. The burgers are grilled, not fried like some places (or even worse steamed...EWWW!!) and are always cooked through nicely but still juicy, and you get that lovely charcoaled flavour like a B.K. They use PROPER bacon and always put plenty on, at least 2 rashers usually, (unlike some places where you get a scrap of something resembling wafer thin ham) and it's all tucked up nice and neat inside the (sesame) bun. YUM!! Delivery wise, they're really quick. You normally get told 30 minutes, but I don't think we've ever had an order delivered over 25 mins, even on a busy Saturday night. The delivery driver is always pleasant and friendly and he's never turned up with blaring music pumping out some dance rubbish (like we had with another company we ordered a pizza from - it was 10pm and I had to tell him to turn it down!) Another nice touch is that they offer a free garlic bread with cheese if you have over £15 worth delivered or over £10 worth on collection - these are awesome! It's worth buying some extra cans or something just to get one! But what's also nice is if you have already got a garlic bread in your order, they will offer you something else free instead (like a bottle of pop or sommat) I really can't fault them, at all. Great little shop.

yes, i would agree, the food is always piping hot and very tasty.. keep up the good work!read more

Having driven by a couple of times, we kept saying, "We should try that restaurant", but never got…read morearound to it... until now. After cooking a Thanksgiving feast, I didn't want to do much cooking over the weekend, so I suggested that we finally give Braza a try. I have had Persian food once before... in Shanghai of all places, and really enjoyed it then, so I was looking forward to this. They do takeaway and delivery (free delivery within a certain radius... I think 3 miles) if you don't feel like going out. There is a car park across the street from the restaurant and if you arrive after 6 p.m., it is just £1 to park. Mr. Snarky had suggested that we should call and make a reservation as it might be really busy on a Friday night. By the time we were talking about reservations it was after 5 p.m. so I suggested if they don't have any tables, we order for takeaway. Problem solved. While the restaurant was busy, including two groups of about 6-7, there were still a couple of tables available and we were seated really quickly. There seemed to be one waitress waiting on all the tables, including one particularly demanding table of men, one of who had rudely told her "quickly, quickly" after asking for something. Kind of felt bad for her until I realized that there were others helping, but they were sitting at a table in front of the bar. We sat at a table in front of a Naan baking station. I thought it was pretty cool, although you cannot see most of the process, but it is nice to get warm Naan. The appetizers seemed to be mostly Naan with various dips with a couple of exceptions like the Persian Chicken Wings, Potato Wedges, and Onion Rings. Was a little disappointed to see things like Potato Wedges and Chips on the menu, but I guess it might be an attempt to fit in with the local clientele. I noticed on the sides menu that they also had a number of dips as well as vegetables and salad. The first part of the menu are the grilled meats, while the second part of the menu seemed to have more of a stewed meat feel. There was a vegetarian dish on the second part of the menu. We were worried about ordering the grilled meat as sometimes it can get very dry, especially when served with rice. For our starters, Mr. Snarky ordered the Persian Chicken Wings and I had the Hummous with Naan. While our starters did come quite quickly, everything was hot, including the Naan :). The Persian Chicken Wings were nice, but I really enjoyed their Hummous. Even though it was just regular hummous (no roasted red peppers, etc.) it had more flavour than those store bought concoctions with loads of different ingredients, but still taste like cardboard. I'm going to need their recipe! For the main, we ordered Braza Mixed Kebab plate for two. With each main you get the choice of Rice, Salad, or Chips. We both went with rice. Make sure you are hungry because while this is for two people, it is a sizable feast. Each of us had a heaping plate of Basmati rice and a platter of meats between us. There were two of the minced lamb kebab, a different lamb kebab, and a chicken kebab. Around the plate of meat were grilled tomatoes, fresh herbs, peperoncini (which I love and can never find a jar of while grocery shopping), and sliced gherkins. Mr. Snarky really seemed to enjoy the minced lamb kebab (Koobideh Kebab). It had some lovely seasoning and I do think it was the best seasoned of the three meats. I enjoyed the other lamb kebab (Barg Kebab), lamb filet beaten flat. While I didn't get much of the saffron marinade, the meat was juicy and tender. The chicken was ok, it just didn't have much flavor, but kudos to them because it was juicy. I loved the rice, but I think the whole dish needed some kind of sauce. I guess we could have ordered a dip from the sides menu, but it didn't come to mind as we were stuffing our faces. While we didn't have dessert because we were so full, I did have a look at their desserts menu sitting on the table and I would be interested to come back and try some of the desserts. They have Baklava, which I absolutely love, and Persian flavoured ice creams (Rose Water, Pistachio, or Saffron). They also have something called Faloodeh and it looks like white, thin noodles covered with Rose Water and Syrup. And of course they have some less traditional, less exotic desserts for those that are not quite so adventurous. I understand the conundrum of wanting to have an ethnic restaurant, but also wanting to cater to the local market. Dinner here is very affordable, especially with the amount of food you receive. With two drinks (one alcoholic, one not), two starters, and the meat platter we spent just over £30 and left absolutely stuffed. There is really no excuse for not trying Braza.... especially because they deliver if you don't want to go out!

I must endeavour to find a cookbook and rediscover the lost art of knowing exactly what you are eating. That said, when food tastes as good as it does from Saffron Express I'd just say put the whisk and chopping board away my friends. I don't think its been here very long but me and my friends discovered this the other week - we were cruising around in my friend's car looking for somewhere we could grab some food. You see, after a few bad run ins with waiting forever for home delivery, we prefer to take matters into our own hands. Saffron Express is pretty good value for money - for under a tenner, you get three different curries plus loads of pilau rice etc. With cheap prices comes mediocre tastes but we were all plesantly surprised. We'll definitely be trying here again for the next film night - good food to share/ mix and match.

Poppadoms, naan breads, chapattis and pathoras, zingy citrus salads and raita, pickles and chutneys and tomatoes and tons of picky bits that make up the starters and accompaniments to most Eastern meals. And if you're feeling even more peckish and want some curry to wash those down, well look no further than the great value Saffron Express. With such low prices, as Sophie says you can afford to mix and match - my most preferred way of eating. It's simple, clean takeaway food, not focussing on too many things at once (I'm always wary of the place that tries to accomplish kebabs, pizzas and curries in one kitchen. It's just not natural). I discovered it via my Prestwich companion who took me there to grab a few stomach-liners for our evening of beverages and it worked out splendidly. In fact, I'm a bit upset I don't have one of these down the road from me. Never mind, just another excuse to go see that chum again. I mean, not that I'd focus on the food... wait, yes I would.
