I was blown away! Didn't really know what to expect from this place, apart from the pod review of people here of there! However I received and email for an all you can eat and drink for $45 and couldn't say no! Attending along and first impression on the inside design was just WOW! Really enjoyed it, it just looked amazing and well thought out. However a little confused if it was Asian, Middle Eastern, or what culture they were trying to represent! However we were severed with tapas styled foods, which was Middle Eastern! And the food just kept on coming, it was great, and drinks too. We had someone at our table ever few minutes. We were over spoiled for choice! I really enjoyed the good we had here and it felt really nice, we felt like we got our monies worth and then some! It is worth a check out! Oh Spice Market, Where do i begin? A friend had raved about Spice Market to me for almost 6 months before i gave into her plea and organised a night out with some friends here (Against everyone else's pleas to not go). If her idea of fun is waiting in line for 40 minutes, impossibility to get a drink and a stuffy crammed venue then she sure is in the right place. The crowd are a tad pretentious and being with three girls was not fun, I was making sure most of the guys in here were keeping their hands to themselves. Sleazy. I actually didn't even manage to get a drink, my friend had one bought for her so i guess she scored but i was out of here in under two hours. I'll give them a few points for the amazing interior and lighting but apart from being visually pleasing, Spice Market doesn't really have anything going for it... for me anyways. read more

This is one of my favorite night out destinations in Melbourne. I looove Spice Market! Located next to the Grand Hyatt, Spice Market can be found at the end of a little laneway. When you enter Spice Market you descend a flight of stairs and immediately sense the atmosphere of the place. This dimly lit bar has an obvious Middle Eastern/Oriental theme. There are different types of Buddha statues placed around the area, some are holding candles- perfectly setting the scene. Spice Market offer private lounges, from the VIP Persian Lounge- to the more open and casual booth style 'Shanghai Lounge'. These are available for booking and I would highly suggest paying for one if you are having a group celebration, as seats are scarce here. Food is also available at Spice Market, but again- it's not really worth eating unless you have a booth or have managed to get their 1 table. I love this place, upmarket bar/lounge/club with good music. Average age is around 25+. read more

We were waiting in the line and then we were not offered to go in due to the fact myself and another female were wearing sneakers. I don't stand for pretentious double standards! A guy was let in, before us, with sneakers and track pants. And we were not let in for sneakers? That's inexcusable. I have worn sneakers twice before to this club. And those two times before we have seen people in casual clothes and we all thought it was unfair justification of our rights. I will not come back. read more

My boyfriend, friends and I are definitely more the "relaxed pub" than "ultra high end club" types. That said, sometimes you really want to get dressed up, overspend on cocktails and hope to spot a visiting celeb. All are possible at Spice Market- IF- IF! you can make it past the so-hip-it-hurts door bitches/bastards. (Seriously, I hate these people.) If you are wearing jeans or have more than a few in your party, you can kiss goodbye the hope of even proceeding through the line- they physically come along and pull out people not beautiful enough and turn them away. If you are one of the lucky chosen ones, or Katy Perry (she partied here several times while in Australia) you will probably be suitably impressed with the lush decor, fabulous atmosphere and good tunes. The Spice Market... Meh. The bouncers seem to have loosened up since some of the previous reviews. The Europeans wearing long-sleeved t-shirts in front of me were repeatedly told to wear a collared shirt 'next time,' but were let in straight away. I also saw a fair amount of denim and ladies in converse. Was the bar staff horrid? No. Were they warm and welcoming? No. Is the interior visually appealing? Yes. Is it annoying seeing all of those well appointed VIP booths completely empty during a weekday when it would make the space a lot more comfortable and enjoyable if opened up? Yes. Admittedly, it's not my scene and it seems like it has the potential to be a really enjoyable venue, but an unappealing air of pretentiousness hangs over this place. The Spice Market feels like a place people go to 'try' to have fun, versus actually having fun. read more

You know you like to get all dolled up sometimes...admit it. You know, iron the shirt, style the hair, use soap on your face...all done to a tee! This is the place to spend that poshed up kind of night! Spice Market fondly reminds me of a great Morroccan bar in NYC called "Le Souk". It's just splendid inside, and makes you feel like you're not even in Melbourne. Rich colors, sparkling light from jeweled lanterns. And the crowd dressed up for the occasion! The drinks are pricey, but the food is surprisingly not. I recommend you just come early, pick at a nice array of noshes and cozy up with your gorgeous (and showered) friends with some drinks. As the night goes on, there are plenty of dark corners to steal a kiss and excellent music to set the scene for a fun (and albeit a bit debaucherous) evening! read more

When Spice Market first opened, word was they'd spent several million on the fitout. If there was ever any doubt, stepping in here makes it very clear that every cent that could be, was spent on this place. From the opulent Middle East inspired lounges to the corridor of Buddhas and the birdcage lanterns that line the ceiling, if they scrimped on anything it's not clear what. I'm a huge fan of cocktails and Spice Market has amongst the best range (and most capable staff to make them) around. I've never visited Spice Market late on a Friday or Saturday night when I imagine there's a queue around the block and a door person critiquing attire and turning people away. If you want to know you'll get in, my advice is to go for pre-dinner drinks or get yourself on a guest list. And make sure you know all about the dress code. I don't care if you're the ghost of Heath Ledger - I doubt you're getting in wearing a polo shirt. read more

Nice place as a nightclub but not so great for bar food scene! Came here at 7pm on a Saturday night to grab some share plates and a few drinks. Could not be seated in a well lit area not could we even sit around a proper table we were seated around something the size of a coffee table! Ridiculous considering we spent $100 on food & drink !! Waiter was friendly but a little too eager to please...I wouldn't return as they couldn't seat us in a suitable area! read more

Spice Market on a weekend evening is always packed with young and social Melburnians looking t dance and rink the night away. The bar/club is very lavish, and themed very well with exotic dressings and furniture straight out of Morocco. Drinks are expensive and delicious - a few of these cocktails and you'll be wanting to come back for more. And make sure you take note of the dress code, the bouncers here are tough, and you'd better be dressed to impress, or there is no way you will get in. If you have a large party, warn all your gusts, and consider setting up a guest list. read more

Hmmm, Spice market has been referred to as "Meat Market," and that term doesn't go ashtray seeing it is a hotel bar, and primarily hotel bars exist for one reason. Yes Ben L, it is a bit of a douche market, judging by the conglomerate of people queuing outside late night for a taxi. It's a mix of corporate types who have the utmost success in filling every place in the city that has alcohol as soon as they clock off. Either this or people trekking from the far outer suburbs "for a classy night on the town." Scientific evaluation requires that I return for more visits to accurately ascertain the type of crowd that hangs out here. But, It's big place, 700 capacity or something like that, and it's a very pleasant place to be in, with the surround surrounds and all. Nice execution on the interior and yes, its a good venue and nice places to sit. Good drinks. Might need to return to investigate those meat market claims further. It's more likely however that It'll be 500 guys to every girl all fiercely competing and generally making everyone's time uncomfortable by over confidence and a Gertrudis display of braggadocio. read more

I cant actually begin to tell you how much I detest what places like this have become. Sad to say, because to look at Spice Market is completely breathtaking, with its impeccably themed Asian/middle eastern architectural style and it really does offer a dining experience like no other. So its easily decided that as a restaurant I would give it five stars. As a club, well i guess you could say that is also an experience like no other. It gets extremely busy over weekends and chances are you'll have to line up. If that's the case, expect a the wait to be a long one and on arrival the club is that busy its hard to get a drink at the bar without being stepped on or elbowed from ever which way. Don't be caught dancing in the non-designated dancing area either, that wont get you very far. read more

Spice Market is all about opulence. This is pretty clear the minute you pass through the gilt doors of this Middle Eastern pleasure den. However, I couldn't help but feel that it was a little lacking in substance. You can tell just how hard they've tried at Spice Market to feign an air of exclusivity. The settings are hilariously plush, with golden birdcages hanging from the ceilings. The bartenders show ample cleavage and most likely receive maple tips in return. No discredit meant to them, they really do make great drinks. As a result, the crowd is a little sleazy. I mean anywhere that spends this much money on their layout is bound to attract the sort of people who love to flash their cash. Ladies should expect more than a few drink offers from the obliging male clientele. However, this place definitely does have something going for it. The cocktails are delicious and there's a lot of fun to be had in the luxurious surrounds. It's just a pity that the crowd take themselves so very seriously. read more

This review is for the Friday happy hour only. $5 drinks until 9pm is a great deal in a luxurious place. I love the decor, cozy private booths if that is your thing, or stay and mingle when the DJ starts around 8pm. There is a strict dress code for men, so be prepared. Come early to avoid the queue. The past few Fridays that my friends and I have been to this club we've had a pretty great experience. However, this last Friday we were celebrating our other friend's birthday and there was a small hiccup in the night. It was her first time there and she loved it! The small hiccup was that in the beginning of the night, there was a man who was lurking around my group of friends. No matter how many times we told him off he kept coming back. Eventually he disappeared for a while and my friends and I made it up on the stage to dance. Said man ended up coming up on stage and trying to dance with one of my friends and she was very uncomfortable so her boyfriend try to tell him off. Instead of acknowledging the creepy behaviour of this man, security yelled at our friend's boyfriend who was only trying to protect us and make us feel comfortable. We ended up leaving the stage since the man was still up there trying to rub his junk up on us. I thought that clubs were supposed to protect their patrons from creepy behaviour like this. Especially when security sees a female telling a male off multiple times, something should have been done. I honestly usually have so much fun at this club and knowing that security doesn't care about the safety of young females is quite disappointing. read more

Have been to Spice Market several times before as my friends like to go there to dance. After a long hiatus, I decided to go there last Friday for after work drinks, and noticed that the dance floor in the middle of venue had been transformed into a more 'sit and chillax' kind of place (not sure if this changes later on at night as I didn't stick around). Bar service was super slow but I guess the $5 basic spirit happy hour specials were still worth waiting around for. I also really enjoyed the acoustic duo who performed that night, and would consider going again if acoustic music was a regular Fri night occurrence. read more

I was in Melbourne for 2 weeks last Feb and I hit this bar/club up twice while I was there. Both times on Thursday, which was ladies night. I recall having to pay 10 AUD to get in but we got 5 drink cards which seemed worth it. I prefer cognac, Hennessy or Remy, so I had to pay an extra dollar each drink, still not a bad deal. The ambiance is very cool walking in, dim lights and lots of Buddhas. The bartenders were really nice and the music was 90's hip hop mixed with top 40. Worth checking out if the line isn't too long! read more

So to begin with we reached early to get a table. We weren't asked for any booking ,they didn't check for our ID and we didn't have to wait in queue as well. We went in, got a table and started ordering drink and siders. Ambience was good, music was brilliant and service was great as well... So the experience was going to be amazing until this happened. A friend came in a little late and I went out to get him. The bouncer at the entrance denied him entry at the pretence of dress code - as he was wearing sneakers and then he asked us to step aside. And just 2 mins later 2 other men in sneakers went in. Then a group of people with torn jeans and sneakers went in and we were astonished as to why aren't they denied entry. Upon confrontation this guy says they have a reservation and so if you can pay $650 he can make an exception. Now it was clear he was taking us for a ride. I asked to speak to his manager to which he replied wait here for 10 mins and he would be here, of course no one came, later on his colleague comes in saying I am the manager and justifies saying it's his (bouncer's) rule and his discretion here so he can deny entry to anyone. At this point we were furious because we were being descriminated against. Here are a few photos (can't upload a video here) the whole episode where you can see him allowing others in sneakers and denying us on the same ground. It has left us wondering if it was racism or something else. Eitherways it spoilt our mood and makes me wonder if anyone else has experienced something similar. May be time to voice out. read more
