In the small seating area, our group sat at the largest seat in the place, a half-circle booth. I had a coffee, yogurt and granola. A sweet, plain yogurt with some crunchy granola is a light, yet filling, shopping snack. The coffee warmed me up for the cold road ahead. Rob had a hot chocolate and a pain au chocolat. Yeah, he's got a bit of a sweet tooth. Servers were polite, professional and helpful. Our orders took a bit too long, considering we were right behind the bakery counter. Of course, it was very busy. I understand the wait, but I was a bit hangry (hungry + angry). Not a good emotion to have. It's definitely the less American choice we could find. How funny, the Americans come to England, expecting English-style food, but the closest we could find in the mall is a French patisserie.

Your instantly greeted by a counter of beautiful cakes an pastries and five or six staff cooking food in the open kitchen. It's really surprising how far back the seating goes. They have done a great job with the little space the have. The decor inside is much the same as outside; nice white walls with yellow and wicker furnishings. On to the food: The menu is pretty small but everything looks and sounds great. It's not your normal breakfast/brunch menu. I wanted everything on it, but We both went for the seared steak with potatoes cheese bake and poached eggs. It was absolutely amazing! The potatoes was different to what I expected, but probably better. I had a lemon grass and goner tea while Soph had a fresh orange juice. Both were great, nothing out of the ordinary, just very good! Definitely a contender for the best breakfast in Bristol. We both went for the beetroot and pumpkin seed cake and a well-deserved cup of coffee, like mother like daughter. The coffee was delightful, good fruity proper coffee. Just what we needed after our shopping ordeal. The beetroot cake was utterly divine, lightly spiced and filled with scrummy orange cream cheese, with little crunchy pumpkin seed surprises all the way through. If you have a baby in a pram this is definitely a take out place only...if you can get in the door to splash out on bread and toppings.

Here you can buy lush fresh cakes and bread to take home, or sit down and have a cup of tea with beans on toast etc and listen to the gossip from the eighty year olds sat next to you. This is one of the few shops in Portishead that has remained the same since I was a child, it even has one of those massive old fashioned tills. If you like time travel, visit this place, but do so before it becomes another pound shop or even worse.

However, they do not sell any filter coffee, just an Americano which I find quite irritating! The entire place is very nicely designed, with lots of drift wood and beach like decor. Additionally on the back wall there is a huge picture of a tropical beach which is nice to look at! I didn't, however, like the uni sex toilets, although they were clean. The prices are reasonable considering the location. Breakfast is only £1.75 for some beans on toast, and a full English is £4.50. Smoothies are roughly £2.90 and they also do a very nice frozen yogurt for £1.50

Cakes served here are brownies, lemon polenta cake, honeybuns (all these three are gluten free), and more traditional deserts like apple pie and cheesecakes. Get inside and the first thing you see are two wooden swings (yes swings) with a really nice chill-out windowsill with cushions to sit on. I'm actually sat on the windowsill as a type this and it's a really nice place to be! Much like the outside, the decor inside Playground is different to many other coffee shops close by; refreshingly different. There's lots of colour, swings and a few board games. It feels much more relaxing than your average chip board heavy coffee shop. The coffee itself is really good. I went for the house flat white which was quite sweet and really moreish.
