Dear SMD Auto, On July 27th, 2021, I booked in a pre-purchase inspection on a GMC Sierra 1500. The only concerns listed on the report were a broken oil pressure gauge and no tread on the rear tires. Your mechanics gave us confidence that the vehicle was in good working order for our cross-Canada road trip and I went ahead with the purchase. A few weeks after taking ownership of the vehicle, we noticed that the brakes would occasionally shudder or make a grinding/scraping noise when braking. We ignored it for the meantime. On August 31st, 2021, just outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario, the brake pedal dropped almost to the floor while driving, and the 'Service Brake System' message was displayed on the dash. There was no braking material left in the rear drums and the wheel cylinder ruptured. This left us in need of a full rear brake replacement - drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, and a new master cylinder, which set us back just over $1100. On the SMD inspection report it says that brakes, pads, shoes, and drums were inspected as part of the pre-purchase inspection. The brake lines were also identified as badly rusted. I'm not sure how such a severe safety issue could pass through your rigorous pre-purchase inspection report checklist, raising concerns about the thoroughness of your pre-purchase inspections on other vehicles. It was recommended to me by soneone I know in town, so it has a good local reputation. I have used it twice, on to get my snow tires off and once to install my Thule bike rack, and they were very reasonably priced. The owner also told me that it was possible to get a two inch hitch on my car, which the Ford dealer in Squamish said could not be done. So, at least, in the future if I ever do need a four bike rack, I know I can upsize it. It can be a bit hard to park, but other than that, it seemed like a very good place to bring the car to me.

Unfortunately, they installed the wrong part on my car (windshield wiper motor) that wasn't a direct fit to my vehicle and was not able to calibrate and kept popping up halfway up the windshield. The issue was obvious the moment I picked it up. Unfortunately we had to leave for our 5 hour drive home and couldn't stick around Whistler area for him to fix the mistake. The owner acknowledged it and refunded labor--but then failed to follow through on the rest. We agreed on a clear resolution: I'd get it fixed back home and return the incorrect part, and he'd reimburse me for the part (1st half before I shipped the part back and second half after he received it) for ~$445 CAD. I did exactly that--paid for the repair, shipped the part back internationally (cost me about $90 CAD in shipping), sent tracking, and followed up. He never paid a cent of what he agreed to for the cost and return of the bad part. Instead, he stopped responding entirely despite me calling 30+ times over the course of multiple weeks, leaving multiple voicemails and sending email. One time he answered the phone, said "hi this is Rob," and the second he realized it was me, he hung up. After that--no responses to calls or emails. He also refused delivery of the returned part at customs (leaving it abandoned in transit), which shows exactly how seriously he takes honoring his word. This wasn't just a mistake. It was a clear agreement to fix it, followed by complete avoidance and no follow-through. If something goes wrong here, don't expect them to stand behind their work. Finding mechanics whom you can trust can be difficult, fortunately, your search can be a little bit faster as you can scratch this one off the list.

I was to bring my car in Wednesday as early as possible. So after giving them two days notice, they didn't have the tires on hand, and after paying $170 for a "inspection" was told that I needed an alignment, and new tires, and a back tire only had 5 psi... Strangely they assumed that I would leave my car in the parking lot until the next morning. (unlocked, as I discovered) but needing transportation, I left. After driving a few minutes, I checked my tire pressure and found it still had 5 psi. So I called them and asked if they put air in the tire and the response was no because we thought you were going to replace them. (but they didn't have them, even though they had two days notice to get at least two)... returned the next morning. I asked the owner as he arrived to work Thursday morning if it was reasonable to be without transportation for 30+ hours for a couple of tires and a wheel alignment? He replied that it wasn't uncommon! I don't think that is a reasonable standard for any shop! Nothing but misleading communication and lies from these guys. Paid $1000 to DIAGNOSE a misfire, which should be a couple hours of work tops. They bill extra hours and don't do the work that they say they will. Wanted to charge an extra 1.5 hours of labor to put my car back together on top of the 8 hours of labor they billed for a simple diagnosis. That simple diagnosis got completed at another shop in 3 hours and i didn't have to wait around for 2 weeks before they touched my car. They also yanked fuses from my car for no reason and left them hidden in the interior (a sick joke for the less mechanically inclined!?) No response from them when i asked why they even opened my fuse box. A shame to the squamish community that we have shady shops like this in operation. Save yourself the headache, keep some cash in your pockets and get your car running quicker by bringing it ANYWHERE other then Newport Auto

We…read moreasked many locals around town in Pemberton but no one knew of any auto shops that would open on the long weekend. Luckily, the wonderful employees at the Chevron in Mt. Currie had the phone number for TJ Tire (they don't seem to be on Google Maps so it did not pop up in any of our searches). Terry answered the phone very quickly and it was such a relief to find someone that could help us! He operates out of his home in Mt. Currie but has all the proper tools and equipment to handle tire problems. He was very friendly and kind and even explained things to me every step of the way to help me understand. He found the leak in our tire, which turned out to be a very tiny old screw, and patched it up and we were good to go! It was such a comfort to be able to continue on our trip back to Vancouver without any worries and he worked very quickly so we were able to still go to all the places that we originally planned for the day. His pricing was also super reasonable and didn't even upcharge at all for working on a stat holiday. I would definitely recommend him for any tire problems, especially on weekends or holidays because he is very responsive! Thank you TJ Tire!
