I am replying to a review. As my mother would say, "Some people would rather be despised than ignored." I have observed that some 40-plus-year-olds can act exactly like a spoiled 2-year-old when they hear the word NO. As in "NO, you will not do this," or "NO, you will not say this." In a martial arts school, there are rules of conduct and standards to be met. And when these rules are broken, there are consequences. When some 40-plus-year-olds don't get their way, their toxicity comes bubbling up to the surface. Toxic people do not belong in a social setting where respect, civility, dignity & honor are demanded, as in a martial arts school. I have several times tried to give this individual a 2nd chance and have been turned down each time. This person definitely has skills, but this person's toxic personality, "Me First" attitude, and the fantasy world that has been self-created is just too much. Because of derogatory comments the individual has made about some of the kids in the class, 2 of the mothers have told me that instead of them talking to the "nut case," they would rather just kick the individual's A_ _. Because of this individual's refusal to accept responsibility, failure to apologize, and hostility toward the school, this person is not welcome back. read more

I am writing this reply, not as the son the the Instructor and Founder of Spivey Karate, but as a black belt. It is unfortunate that Ms. Rogers, who was a very promising student and worked very hard at both karate and kobudo, would write such a posting. I think if everyone looked in the mirror, we can all find something wrong with something or someone. Spivey Karate is a mission field in the Dade City area. It is also not a black belt factor. As our culture slides into coddling children and rewarding participation over achievement, this instructor and system of karate instills hard-work, patriotism, patience, endurance, loyalty and the application of the techniques learned to actually defend oneself. Life is hard and people of character recognize and own their mistakes. Perhaps the lesson not learn was humility and self-reflection, both of which can only be applied in our hearts. All who displayed this would certainly be welcomed back. read more

With all that I was told last year by my physician that I would need a life changing surgery, and full transparency it scared me, especially when I was told about post operation recovery (I would be down hard). I'm not much for sharing, but I entrusted Danny Pacheco (gym owner) & Coach Keith Moore (personal trainer) with this devastating news and they put me on an 8-week health challenge focused on my post operation recovery and worked me until I hit the operating table. Day one out of surgery I was required to walk one lap around the hospital floor, later that evening I was walking 2 multiple times, and day 3 I averaged 3 laps every 2 hours. I was told I would need someone to assist me physically with day-to-day effects, which was not the case since physically I was able to care for myself and still not sure why, but I never needed to finish the pain medication. Every time I go into the gym, I'm greeted with a warm and friendly smile, and even in one case Coach Hugh and Coach Marissa came up and asked me to pray one day unprompted and without knowledge of what I was going through (I needed it). Sorry if this was long winded, but I don't write many reviews but could not keep quiet about this GEM of a GYM, today marks one week out of surgery and though I still have a road to recovery I have more independence than I was told I would have, even able to walk around the block, there is something special about this place.
