I tried Splash Poke earlier this work week while on my lunch time walk and though it was A-OK. I went with the staff member's recommendation and got The Works for $14.95. I opted to have the salmon and tuna chopped sashimi on a bed greens and had all the toppings included minus the green onions. While I love the idea and LOVE love LOVE poke bowls back home in Seattle or in coastal areas, I just wasn't blown away here. Don't get me wrong - the fish was fresh and the atmosphere bright and clean. But the flavours felt like a jumble. The offerings on the menu didn't really feel like carefully crafted flavours. "The Works" included mango, canned pineapple, and canned corn. Say what? Yeah, it was just an odd combination. I liked the aioli sauces and the nori and sesame seed toppings but I really think this could go from A-Okay to A-mazing if the sauces and toppings felt more crafted. Also $14.95 for maybe two ounces of sashimi feels steep. I'd rather hit up a local sushi bar and order sashimi and a side for the same price but get more fish. If you've never had poke, certainly come and give Splash Poke a try but if you LOVE poke bowls from coastal towns, you might feel like I do. Poke on people, poke on! read more

I've ordered a few times this year (Covid-19) for take-out. Being celiac I always order "the friendly" bowl on brown rice. I phone ahead so it is ready for me when I swing by. There is some parking on the street, a loading zone in front of the building to the south of the store, but during normal traffic, non-covid days, it's usually packed and there is no parking on 109 St. It's a bowl I eat all of... usually in one sitting. It's good, but it's not Maui poke. There's just a little zing missing in the sauce. I can't put my finger on it exactly. Fish is usually fresh, and there's enough in a serving. Price... understandable for a stand-alone shop downtown. Staff wears masks, sanitizer is provided. They don't accept cash payment - card only , but I always feel a bit guilty about the tip bowl, I don't have any coins (which can be sanitized), and tap to pay doesn't have an option. It's a nice quick meal on the go. read more

A small joint with 4 tables and a few high top stools. It's a small space and sound echoes. Ordering was extremely difficult as I couldn't hear the staff and had to yell my order over the loud music playing. Parking is horrendous as there's no metered parking on the block of the storefront and it's all private lots or metered. The poke bowls are a a three step method. Choose a base of rice, salad or noodles. Then pick up to three scoops of protein. Then you get to add sides of your choosing. I found the sides were not given as generously as I would like. As I feel this makes the bowl. The sauces were slightly overwhelming and too much was applied making the entire dish overly saucy. Underwhelmed. I felt the slow service, overly drenched sauces and the extremely difficult ordering process a huge headache not worth coming back for. Seriously I had a headache from screaming my order to the staff and trying to tune the screaming patrons and staff and blaring music out while I sat down and ate. Worth a try. I've only recently found myself yearning for Hawaiian Cuisine, having zero to none eateries in Edmonton to give you even a taste of what that looks like. I've been living through social media to try and get a hit of that island taste. Until recently, where we have been lucky enough to have two poke shops open one after the other, all around the same vicinity, HURRAY. Splash's take of poke is made to be more modern than traditional, you have the option to choose from 4 combinations of bowls or get creative and build your own combination. Prices are set with the amount of scoops of protein you want. 1($9.95) 2($13.95) 3($15.95) Walking into the room, you're welcomed into a bright space where the menu is right on the back wall. Signs will guide you on where and how to order. Pretty basic "subway style", where you're working down the counter to get to your prize. They have a couple of tables and some bar seats by the window. It's been pretty packed every time I've stop by though, so for me; my visits will strictly be just to order and take to-go kind of deal. The Classic - ($13.95) - 5/5 - Salmon and Tuna with piles of toppings scooped over a mound of rice. Fresh meaty bites of fish with the crispy texture of fried onion and garlic, the sriracha aioli gave a nice kick to the whole bowl. I really enjoyed how fresh and guilt free this tasted; each bite had different pops of flavors and textures; there was no skimping on flavors. I like! That said, I could have appreciated more differentiated flavour profiles rather than the mishmash I ended up with in my bowl -- maybe I just needed to select a different sauce? I was disappointed that they didn't have tap water available as an option (and this kind of seemed weird) but being the small kiosk-like shop that it is, I really had nothing to complain about. I sat on a stool at the back facing the window that faces the street to eat my bowl. I really enjoyed the customizable nature of this shop -- it is far easier to avoid things that I do not like or appreciate when items are that customizable! I've been here a couple of times and it's always blown me away. When I have a craving for poke this is the place to go to. I have yet to try their whole menu but I'm working my way through it. The portions are very generous compared to other poke places I've tried. If you want to try poke I would first try the original then venture the menu. Service is always fast and attentive. Sushi on a conveyor belt, Brazilian steakhouses with meat on a sword, pizza with cheese injected into the crust, and now, Hawaiian Poké in Edmonton! The hunnybunny and I have loved us on some poké in the islands, feasting with the city construction workers at a tiny storefront serving heaps of fresh fish and condiments in a bowl. Good times, good times. We've had the more urbanized presentation in Vancouver, and there are several poké places on Alameda Island, where I live just outside San Francisco. (Heck, even the San Francisco Costco gets poké directly from Hawai'i!) So it was with a pretty light heart that we skipped into Splash Poke to check out the offerings. It's pretty straight-forward: pick either a pre-designed bowl or DIY, which itself is a simple process: (1) pick rice, noodles, or salad as your base (2) pick protein, sauce(s), and mix-ins to populate your bowl (3) pick toppings and garnish to finish up The potential for disaster is going nuts on all the options and completely obscuring the wonder that is sushi-grade fish with sweet and creamy sauces and stuffs. There's a reason why the most traditional presentation is the fish, soy sauce, and a bit of wasabi. So, having been warned, let me relate that I put in my suggestions for the base (salad) and proteins (ahi tuna & scallops) and stepped away from the counter to secure a couple of seats. Hunnybunny went all Jackson Pollock on me, adoring the two bowls with all manner of sauces, toppings, crunches, creamies, and more! And she wound up making two completely different, spectacularly satisfying non-traditional taste sensations that kept a smile on my face for hours! Splash Poke opened it's doors last week on the main level of The Mayfair building on the corner of Jasper Avenue and 109 Street. If the hour long lineup around the building on opening day was any indication, I'd say Edmontonians have been waiting a long time for poke! Poke in its simplest form is fresh raw fish cut into cubes, lightly seasoned, and served on tender sushi rice. Traditional seasonings are heavily influenced by Japanese cuisine, where soy sauce, sesame oil, green onions and seaweed are predominantly used. Served as a meal it's healthy and delicious, so it's no wonder it's becoming so popular outside of Hawaii. My fiance and I stopped by for lunch right before the doors opened at 11, and a small lineup of 5-6 people started to form right behind us. People want their poke! The space is decently sized with natural sunlight brightening up the space, with coral and teal tones providing a bit of cheerful colour. There aren't really any instructions on how to order, but as a fast-casual dining spot the process is fairly self explanatory. Follow the signs above the counter to order a signature bowl, or customize your own with their variety of proteins, toppings, and sauces. Pricing is dependent on the protein portion size (single $9.95/ double $13.95/ triple scoop $15.95) and whether you choose to add premium toppings (Ahi Tuna +$1, Avocado +$1.50). Off the 'Splash Favourites' menu Splash Poke offers four bowls: The Works, The Classic, The Tropical, and The Spicy. The favourites are only offered in the double size and no substitutions can be made. Gordon went with The Tropical bowl which featured salmon, scallop, splash aioli, cucumber, seaweed salad, crab mix, tobiko, pineapple, and mango, all topped off with crispy onions, panko, and additional aioli. The bowl was beautiful with bright pops of colour and fresh fish, but I found it to be overdressed with aioli and with some competing flavours given the number of components. All mixed together the bowl felt quite heavy, and I was also a little disappointed to find masago instead of the promised tobiko on the menu. The double splash was decently sized, but we felt the portion of fish could have been more generous. For myself I went with the build your own bowl option to customize a bowl to my liking. Building a custom bowl proved to be extremely difficult as the glass separating myself from the employees behind the counter was questionably tall. I found myself having to yell my order at the employees behind the glass separation - I couldn't hear them and they obviously couldn't hear me. Judging by the orders made after us, others had the same difficulty. I can't even imagine how hard it would be to order a custom bowl when the space is full of customers. I ended up ordering ahi tuna with sweet onions, cucumber, green onion, seaweed, and jalapenos mixed with a combination of shoyu and spicy garlic sauce. I finished my bowl with tobiko (which again was actually masago), crispy garlic, nori, and sesame seeds, but unfortunately due to the difficulty in ordering my bowl was drizzled with splash aioli and sriracha aioli which I hadn't intended to order. The ahi tuna was fresh, and the sauces had enough flavour to add punch to the fresh ingredients. Without the addition of the aioli, this bowl would have been spot on for me. As Edmonton's first dedicated poke restaurant, Splash Poke is paving the way for more spots to open in the city. Although the bowls aren't true to those you would find in Hawaii, it's great that Splash offers the ability to customize bowls. However, with customization comes longer wait times, as each bowl is built in an assembly line fashion and dependent on how well the communication is on each side of the counter. With some adjustments to the the glass partition and staff familiarity with ingredients, customers should be able to get in and out of the restaurant in no time. read more

Splash Poke reminded me of what you might find on a sunny day at a beach kiosk. I know it's the corner of Jasper Ave. and 109 St. but it works. It's a cute place with a serving area at the back. I had the small ahi Poke which was fresh, cut in big soft pieces, and I topped it off with seaweed, tobiko, and sesame seeds. It's a decent size and you get to customize it choosing your rice (white or brown), noodles or salad. I asked for my final sauce topping on the side to ensure my Poke wasn't overwhelmed with sauce, which was great because I love the great fresh flavour and texture of ahi. Mahalo! read more

I remember last year when Splash Poke had it's grand opening. The line up was occupying the entire street! And, for good reason too. We don't have much variety when it comes to healthy foods aside from your regular wraps, subs, salads. And, if you've never been to Hawaii like myself, this type of dish is so foreign! But, such a refreshing new change for the city! All salads here are served cold - sushi style protein too, only thing cooked is the shrimp. It's a really cool concept where you can choose your base i.e. noodles or rice, then the protein and toppings. I normally go for The Spicy. It has shrimp, tofu and crab mix. It's a good option if you'e not keen on the too much raw fish option. I always ask for more spicy garlic sauce cause I don't like my vermicelli poke bowl to be too dry. It says it comes with sriracha aoili. They only drizzle this over top, so the dish really isn't that spicy at all. The crispy onions are the added cherry on top. Get extra for sure! read more

I've been craving a poke bowl since trying it in Las Vegas and Calgary, and it looks like the poke trend has arrived in Edmonton! I love the freshness and variety of ingredients in this type of hawaiian bowl - kind of like a sashimi salad but with even more options... so was excited to try Splash Poke located on 109st for a weekend quick lunch. This place has now been open for 4 months so I was eager to try! Atmosphere: 4/5 Overall neat and clean little restaurant. A small number of seats were available, but most people chose to do take out. Parking can be a bit tricky but we did find space across the street (had to pay epark though) Food: 4/5 There were three sizes available, which were determined by the number of scoops of protein. I love the variety and freshness of the ingredients! I ended up choosing the salad option with tuna for a 'little splash' (small bowl). Unfortunately, there were only 2 toppings allowed for the smallest bowl so I ended up with seaweed salad and mango. Next, I got to choose mix-ins -green onion, sweet onion, cucumbers, cilantro and seaweed, but I did forgo the jalapenos. No sauce as I prefer more bland food, but the seaweed salad and tuna were already flavourful enough for me. To top everything off, I chose the panko (japanese bread crumbs) and nori. Everything was very fresh, and the cilantro especially gave a great touch. I like that it was possible to choose 1/2 salad and 1/2 rice or noodle. The small bowl ended up being filling enough for me Price: 3/5 Seemed to be a bit on the expensive side for a bowl of ingredients just thrown together, but it is a good variety. It is probably possible to make your own poke bowl at home for way less... and to be honest I've been thinking about doing it! Update: Second time trying this place, came around the same time and almost no line. Got in and out in under 5 mins! Definitely better than that half hour but maybe I was lucky. Built my own bowl this time. Decided on the triple splash with salmon and tuna on brown rice, all the mixins, chose a couple sauces, toppings and garnishes. It was WAY more delicious than The Works that I got the first time! This one was more expensive but much more worth it in my opinion. ------------------------------------------ First time trying this place since it opened. Small place that seats about 10-12 people. Like other people have said, it's quite a long wait time before ordering especially at lunch. (About 30 mins with 15 people in front of me). I ordered The Works (about $15, a bit expensive) which is a base of your choice 1 scoop of salmon and tuna each and splash aioli and Sriracha aioli and all the toppings and mixins. It was actually really tasty, although with all the different toppings it gives the bowl a lot of different flavours and textures, which some people may not enjoy. Overall i liked it, it was pretty good! But I think it's a bit of a design flaw to put a big glass wall between you and the employees when you're up to order, making it hard to hear for both sides. (It's for hygiene purposes I'm assuming) I do like the fact that they have a cold display case with premade bowls. Since it's brand new, there are some definite bugs to work out. I give this place 4 stars - 5 for the food and 3 for the ambience. First the ambience - no parking, hard to hear and be heard and limited tables. The food! Oh it was delish. Splashpoke is a fast food type place, where you order at the counter and then your food is made right in front of you very quickly. I absolutely think the quality of food reflects that style of restaurant and that this place is a nice, fresh addition to the fast food scene in Edmonton. Poke itself is a Hawaiian dish that is raw fish in different type of sauces - it is not like sashimi where you are trying to just enjoy the flavour of the fish itself. The rice was room temperature and the add ins were cold, which makes for a very refreshing eat. I got a build your own bowl, and I don't really like raw fish (I know, I know, what was I doing there??) So I got shrimp and chicken on rice. I added sriracha aioli and sesame sauce, onions, cucumber, mango, corn and tobiko. Then a little bit of shoyu and splash aioli. We absolutely devoured it. They had a tofu option, so I'd be quite interested to learn if any of the sauces are vegan - if yes, you could make absolutely delicious vegan bowl. read more

So so so yummy! Yes, the bowls taste as good as they look! If you don't know what to expect going into this, you're essentially getting a bowl of really good inside out sushi. Their fish is very soft and fresh, it has a light taste to it and it certainly isn't overpowering so don't be worried about a fishy sort of taste. Their fruit is also ripe and fresh, and the toppings are just to die for. You would expect having a lot of toppings that some may not go together but everything works! It's like a symphony of flavors , I can't even begin to describe it - everything goes together and nothing overpowers anything else in the bowl. Both the boy and I got the works (minus cilantro) and we were super pleased. The crab meat and Panko was my favorite part. It isn't too crowded and the staff is very nice and helpful, they helped me choose what to get being as indecisive as I am. They also have options, if you wish, to make your own bowl which I think is really cool if you wanna go healthier. A quiet place to eat, nice staff and super fresh food. Delicious!! read more

I love the poke I've had in Miami and Hawaii. In fact, I headed from the airport directly to poke, that's how much I love poke. In Miami the poke was more upscale, paired with textures and sauce flavors that really brought out the wonder of the fish. In Hawaii I've eaten poke several times, in several completely different places, from high-end multiple types of fish and sauce style restaurant to the blue-collar construction worker storefront. Each poke visit has been wonderful. So to find out that poke is coming to Edmonton, well, I'm excited! Finally all the fish without all the airport drama! Alas, it wan't to be. Splash Poke is too much, too many undisciplined uncoordinated options, resulting in a muddy mish-mash of tastes struggling to get out. Less is more. Poke is a traditional, no-frills Hawaiian dish. It's comfort food - maybe not on the level of Spam Musubi. It's meant to be delicious, but not fancy. As we're quite far from the coast, I went in with low expectations. Yet the fish tasted great! And the flavours in my bowl, the Tropical (salmon, scallops, mango, pineapple, panko, and more) worked well together - all of the flavours were present: sweetness, saltiness, bitterness, sourness, and yes, even umami. And everything was mixed with perfect amounts. And yes, at $14, it was not inexpensive, but given how expensive salmon and scallops are, it's a decent value. And the great thing is that it makes a whole, complete, and nutritious meal that will fill you up and not be too terrible for your health. I liked how you could mix and match your bases for your bowl - I went with half mixed greens and half brown rice. It would also be fantastic if they were to offer quinoa as a choice in the future, as many of the Poke stands in Hawaii do. The service was a little awkward, but given that the place has only been open for a few days, this is understandable. I went on a somewhat busy Saturday evening - lunchtime could be a whole different beast here. Definitely not the same experience you get from poke in Vancouver, or even Calgary. Splash poke is missing the freshness and variety of options in Vancouver. Instead of having 100% fresh, ripe ingredients, they use substitutes for expensive fruit and veggies. Their pineapple from a can, jalapenos are pickled, the mango was thawed from frozen, and they charge an extra $1.50 for avocado! These complaints seem trivial. But if you've had the real deal anywhere on the West Coast, you'll leave disappointed and confused. The prices of their bowls are also more expensive. A regular bowl costs around $16 with options to upgrade to around $20. Even in Calgary most regular bowls start around $12 and give you options to upgrade for around $16. Vancouver poke is even cheaper and better, but I understand that wouldn't be a fair comparison because of the difference in location. read more

I've been looking forward to trying poke for a long time and it's great to have a poke restaurant in this convenient location. This location does not have a lot of tables and is more geared towards takeout/delivery. The poke is served in takeout bowls even if you sit in. I tried the 'The Works' and 'Tropical' bowls and they were both very good. You can choose rice, noodles or salad as base and the fish, fruit and veggies are heaped on top along with sauce. Both the bowls I tried had sweet ripe mango when I ch completed the time and salmon beautifully. Their sauces aren't overwhelmingly sweet or spicy and add a nice subtle tang. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for lunch or an early dinner. read more

The Works This place has been getting incredible hype for the past week it's been open. Probably because Poke is hype AF and is decently healthy to eat. If you don't know what poke is, it's basically a hawaiian fish salad that has chunks of ahi tuna or any fish really. Spalsh Poke's the works had: Salmon, tuna, shoyu sauce, seaweed salad, crab mix, tobiko, pineapple, mango, corn, crispy onions, crispy garlic, panko, nori, sesame seeds, splash aioli and sriacha aioli. Basically,....the works. Upon my first bite I was transported to a time in Hawaii where all we did was eat Poke from Costco and drove around with the top down in a Mustang listening to Chvrches. It was like ratatouille. The base I had for the works was salad because health is wealth. It tasted fresh and if salad ain't your thing there's also rice both white/brown and vermicelli. All the ingredients were fresh and had large pieces of fish. If fish isn't your forte they have chicken, tofu, shrimps and scallops.Don't forget to add avocado either like I did. Definitely gonna come back and try the rest of their lineup. Located on 109 across from the racist Central Social Hall, this place is in a prime location. Small interior but shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes to eat. Service was fast and friendly and Splash is a great alternative to Freshii if you prefer fish. Not the best poke I've ever had, but not the worst either. The last two times were definitely not good though. I paid extra for Ahi tuna (rather than regular tuna) and it was almost inedible, with thin chewy white layers throughout the fish chunks (supposed to be all pink...). The entire bowl is just not good enough for me to go back anymore. Sushi shop is where it's at for poke. read more

While the food was simple, clean, and light (light being the most ideal word) the service is too slow. We had only 4 people in front of us and it took us 15 minutes to get spoken to. It was difficult to hear the employees and talk over the glass wall in between us, with the echoing room and multiple people helping you at the same time. For the price, this food is not worth it. The bowls were hardly filled (two ice cream scopes of rice and a half, with barely full scopes of each protein item). One of the servers did give me a lot of seaweed. The taste was OK, but nothing worth outstanding. They should change the name of "bowl" to "cup". We ended up having to buy more food after. Very disappointing. read more

This is my go to lunch spot during the work week. Great quality ingredients. Made the way you want it. Perfect portion sizes for everyone. And the crunchy onions on top make it perfect. I'll have to remember to take a picture one of these times. read more

This place is great for lunch or if you're looking for an easy dinner. The presentation is beautiful. The food is also healthy if you make good choices but there's plenty to splurge on as well. You have the option to have brown rice, white rice or quinoa. Be sure to add all the Fixin's. read more

I was so excited when I heard a poke place was opening up here in Edmonton. Had the biggest craving after recently coming back from Hawaii. Super disappointed. I had poke everyday in honolulu and splash came nowhere close to the quality or taste of the places I went to in Hawaii. Keep in mind, I also had super low expectations because we're not on the coast and we rarely get any fresh fish out here. One thing they should really enhance is the spices and flavouring, that's what really defines poke. Otherwise it's like a glorified sashimi blob with crappy sauce sprinkled over. read more

EDITED (July 13): Splash Poke has been greatly improved since my first visit and have visited multiple times since. I enjoy the portion size which i find justifies the price point and add ons. Tropical is my go to splash favourite! And the impenetrable ordering screen has been altered to allow a great interaction between customer and employee. One suggestion though, PATIO SPACE! Splash Poke is my GO TO place for poke but I wish there was a patio space. being on 109 ST it is definitely possible. especially since the indoor seating is a bit minimal. The patio space does not have to be anything over the top like The Pint's patio, even just a few more tables and chairs outside would be awesome. Just saying. :) First Review (May 8): First off, I will commend them on choice of location. A good addition to this area of the city (109 St and Jasper Ave). Seems like Whyte Ave and Brewery District is getting most of the love lately. I went on May 17, the day after Splash Poke's grand opening. After hearing about the length of line I thought it was best to wait it out. The space Splash Poke is located in is fairly small so I wouldn't be surprised if the line is out door during a slight rush. The line was almost out the door when I was there for dinner. Seems to be a trend with custom dishes like Love Pizza, Blaze and now Splash Poke. With the customization requires engagement between customer and staff. At Splash Poke customers discuss with at least 3 individual staff members handling Base, Protein, Mix-ins, Toppings, Sauce and Garish. I do understand the need for screening between customers and staff but the screening at Splash Poke is really high and is almost impenetrable for the human voice. You need to either talk really loud (in an already small space) or repeat yourself multiple times. A bit annoying and there's probably a solution to this but I'll let management figure that out. In the end, the dishes are refreshing and light; something you expect from a hawaiian dish. They do seem to go light on the mix-ins and toppings, but I guess you can always ask for more. This is why I kind of question the price. It does seem to be a bit steep; I got a double scoop ($13.95) with Ahi (+$1) and with tax will go $15+ in the end. I would go back Splash Poke again but possibly not as often as I thought due to price and quantity. I give this place a 2 only because the service is a gong show way too many people behind the counter and employees do not know to do divert from the steps they were taught (aka multitask ) and glass wall is large a kind of obnoxious. As far ask the pokè I give it a 5 out of 5 fish is filleted properly and Tastes amazing. Price is very similar to north shore pokè in California when you do the conversion is pretty close to the same. This was my second time here i think ill wait till the other new pokè place opens before I come back again read more
