I'm undecided about the refurbishment - while the showers and spa area are much better, it would have been so nice if they'd put a jacuzzi / whirlpool tub in. I can live without a swimming pool, but a jacuzzi is kind of a staple in most gyms these days, even city ones. (They had one here, years ago - though I don't think it was a Fitness First back then.) Aside from that, I really like the new spa area, especially the loungers. It could be kept a few degrees warmer - it's a bit nippy when you get out of the sauna / steam room - but it's very nice and peaceful, and the loungers are super-comfy. The new gym itself, I'm not sure about. It looks much more macho and serious now, with all that black and gray and rubber, and I find it much less relaxing than the airy white and purple spaces that we had before. I guess serious athletes will approve of this, but I liked the old, light, unintimidating atmosphere. A big yay on the rebounders, and the new hairdryers in the ladies' changing - they are a HUGE improvement on the old heavy ones. Overall, it's still a great place to come, for a small city gym. Staff are friendly, professional, and know their stuff. It's always clean, and I've never had any problems with theft or harassment from guys the way I have in London. At some point I probably will want to find somewhere with a pool (especially since the new pool at Westminster is so small and crowded), but for now it's a fine place to come, and monthly fees are reasonable.

Lights supposedly come on automatically at 6.30am, although ive had to wait till 6.45 befor and that cuts into your training time, especially if you have to go to work straight after. All in all a no frills friendly gym.

The facility is equipped with washrooms. This place is across the street from "The Cricketers" bed and breakfast so it is great to go workout, if you are in the area for few days. Also it is FREE!

The equipment is fine ie the usual machines however not as modern as some other gyms in the area but it has all that you need. It would be good the have some additional machines such as power plates etc and maybe some machines with built in usb and tv etc. The pool is a great bonus and well maintained and there is a nice little sauna and steam room although the steam room is sometimes a little dirty. The service is fine, pretty non obtrsuive however sometimes you can get hijacked by all the personal trainers on the prowl but mainly they are polite and not too pushy. Opening hours at the weekends could be better as it opens quite late at 9am and also the classes all seem full in weekday evenings and nothing at weekends.

I used to go to a gym in another town who had a huge mebership area / café, nice changing rooms and good showers, jacuzzis and vast amounts of space everywhere, all of which LA lacks, so in comparison I'm not overly impressed, but LA Cambridge is now the one closest to my new flat. However I joined mainly for the classes - I DID mention this to the membership advisor, several times. They don't have a huge selection of classes and for the most popular ones it seems one would have to stay on the online "memberzone" class booking website until past midnight, when a new day becomes available to book, to get a place for a popular class 9 days down the line. I was rather surprised to find that a particular class I had been planning to book was already full around 9am on the day it had become available. Surely this is something the HO / Gym manager / other timetable planning body should have already noticed and changed the timetable accordingly, either adding more classes to it or moving the popular ones into a bigger studio. I think the membership advisor should have at least mentioned this when selling the gym to me. They seem to mainly push the personal trainer / gym equipment & weights side, which does not interest me like I said in the first place. Rather than listening to my wishes and how i would like to use the gym, the advisor kept repeating the same things which were largely irrelevant to me ("if you pay a more expensive joining fee, you get a free personal training session voucher." "yes, but I'm not interested in a personal training session" "but if you pay more you get it for free!" you get the idea...) I have also emailed the HO and have received no reply whatsoever. All in all - the little I have managed to go to the gym has been fine, but the "office"staff do not listen to the customer (instructors are nice) and neither does the so-called customer service at HO. Regularly over-subscribed classes mean the timetable does not respond to demand. They run what is their idea of what a gym should be, not a service to customers.

I used the cardio machines, the pools, the sauna and steam room during my free trial. The pool was warm and clean, and was pretty quiet whenever I went there. The cardio machines were good, but some of the bikes didn't work properly which is annoying. I liked the changing areas and the showers, nice and warm and very clean throughout. I'd love to join, but £51 a month off-peak is too much for me at the moment.

I've been working out for three decades here and overseas. I only just got my partner to go to the…read moregym as she had gym-phobia. Surprisingly within just three weeks of working out here in almost every session there are people slamming machine weights and free weights aggressively next to you. One guy threw down 25kg weights onto the floor right next to where I'm standing just missing my feet rather than putting them away. Aggression and a real attitude especially from the gym going men. No signs up at all stating rules about no slamming weights or putting weights away and general gym etiquette. When I confronted a staff member about it her response was totally inconsiderate, saying that some gym goers had been there years and there's nothing they can say to them and to train at other times of the day when it's less busy - we already we coming off peak. I can't imagine what it would be like at peak times. My partner now can't train there and gym phobia has been cemented in her mind. You are locked in for a 12 month contract, so if you experience discomfort and issues like the above you can't get out of it. The staff can't won't help you and you are powerless if you have issues. This review is about the Spa and Spa services rather than the health club side of the facility…read more We (the girls) booked a "Pamper and Afternoon Tea" spa day that began at 11:00am. We were greeted and given our itinerary for the services we had booked and while we completed the obligatory waiver paperwork they brought us some hot hand towels and orange juice. That done, we were given a tour of the spa and the areas that we would be using (changing rooms and pool). The lockers are opened and locked with a magnetic wristband, which is super easy to wear and there are consequently no locker keys to lose in the pool! We hung out in the sauna and had a quick swim before donning robes and slippers (the robe and towels are on loan - you can keep the slippers) and heading to the 'Relaxation Room' to await our beautician for our beauty services. The girls are all lovely and everything runs on time. To top off our afternoon we had afternoon tea (with a glass of Prosecco), which, although not as ostentatious as the one at the Cafe Royal, was quite lovely, with ample sandwiches, scones and cakes.
