Great location Just head up the stairs

If you want a quality hair cut with great conversation - this is where you go. These guys can do it all. No frills, just a wonderful experience. Great pricing too.

If you're looking for a solid, straight, no hassle, frou-frou with a lemon twist, where Levis 501's are the norm and not twig leg, skinny jeans... "You have arrived!" The last few times that I've tried new shops to get my haircut, I left with the latest trend of extras from HBO's "Mad Men." (Sigh) I just want a straight, basic, business as usual, haircut. (I am no Don Draper wannabe, leave "The flavor of the month," to those other guys who are still trying to figure it out.) The Sports Barber is easy to miss. I've driven by this corner many times and had no idea there was a barbershop located @ the corner of Golden Lantern & Del Prado. Well, in its defense, the Sports Barber is located on the 2nd floor and sits back at least 200' from the curb. Photo - https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sports-barber-dana-point?select=yEC-u7MskF98EnEwczJt6A Walked in, just after 11:30am, popped my head in through the open doorway, "Hello! Do you have an opening for a walk-in?" Alex gave a smile, "We sure do, it'll give hime something to do!..." 'As he gestured to the barber's chair with a gentlemen reading the sports section. This was the day after the Cubs won the World Series. Say hello to "Greg." Store front - Located on the 2nd floor (Photo) - https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sports-barber-dana-point?select=20o9z0TaxLIQqq3E9MrRFQ For being located deep in South OC territory, I was taken back by the very home-spun, down-to-earth vibe, there's no pretentious BS or self-entitled attitudes, just a very cool place to come and get a haircut. Now, mind you it'll be a $30 haircut BUT for the area, that's about the going rate. (Cost: $28) I'm no Rockefeller but this "ain't" no Supercuts either. My good friend, FT, asked, "So, do you like that cut?..." 'And actually, I do. I'm not a hard to please kind've guy, it's hair, it'll grow back. (Well, at least for most of us... 'And then there's the Men's Hair Club.) If it was just "okay," I'd say so and most likely not return and be on my way. Greg was great, no rush, with good conversation as well... 'Overall, solid. You ever been to a place where making conversation with the barber/stylist felt like trying to thread a needle in a dimly lit room while wearing sunglasses and then eventually everyone just stops talking?... 'Well, it wasn't like that at all. We (Greg, Alex & I), talked about everything from COSTCO, Hawaiian poke - the real kine not what you find in all these dime-a-dozen "Poke'palooza" shops popping up like Starbucks in the early nineties, produce, to whatever happened to come up... 'Like I said, down-to-earth. As we say back on the aina, "Talking story." Greg & Alex - https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/sports-barber-dana-point?select=WIM6A565tTJCfhIGOJ4qqQ I've been to only one other barber shop in neighboring, Laguna Niguel, where I've had a similar experience, straight forward, old school barber shop that delivers a great no-nonsesne haircut. I'm not knocking these Metrosexual places, they're cool too, fancy w/an adult beverage... I've been to a few myself but sometimes, nothing beats the classics. Thanks Greg and Alex for the aloha and pointing me to a great local poke shop, just down the road, 1 exit south. (I already bookmarked it.) If you're looking for a good, South OC barbershop that has more character than most people you meet nowadays, give Sports Barbers a try. A hui hou! Until next time! - Big Aloha! Sorry guys but you asked what I wanted I said 2 1/2 on the sides 1/4 of the top and clean up the back of my neck. I got the better part of the side of my head shaved? The other side completely botched and about an inch of the top. I have no hair on top and I look like one of those hipsters that shave one side of there head. People make mistakes. It will grow back but ...hey I got to go buy some new hats

    Such a gorgeous studio!

2 Guys, 1 Cut…read more Out-of-towner was in need of a hair cut and saw the barber pole at Broken Blades Barbershop. Walked over, but Seth was booked well in advance. So he suggested Lucas at The Den Barbershop. Hell, Seth found the shop on my phone and even helped me book a same-day appointment with his buddy Lucas. (Note: Anyone business owner that eagerly recommends others, even their competitors, is a good person in my book. Be sure to look up Broken Blades next to Starbucks!) I arrived and played with the house dog a few minutes before my appointment. Lucas sat me down and asked what I was looking for. Mainly I just gripped about all the hair I'm losing cause I'm getting old and after poking at my head a little bit, he said, "I can make this look like you're not losing all that hair." (My internal reaction: "Huh?! How??"). But since Seth recommended him so highly, I just told him to go for it. Since he saw me watching one of the television screens in the shop, I think he purposely turned my seat so I faced it and he did his work. When he was done, he turned me back to the mirror and I was speechless. I was honestly speechless because I haven't gotten as good of a haircut like this in the last ten years. Highly recommended Seth at Broken Blades and Lucas at The Den Barbershop!!

I made an appointment a 6:00 PM appointment for yesterday, to see Alicia before she leaves on a trip. I went through the website, chose my time, selected my stylist, doubled checked everything, and hit confirm/send/whatever button finalizes the transaction. An email confirming this arrived soon after. I put it in my calendar. All done, right? Apparently not. After driving 30 min to get here I was informed I did not have an appointment. I explained exactly what I did and was then gobsmacked to hear that after I book an appointment online the email I got has a code in it that I then need to enter online in order to REALLY confirm the time slot. Then, after that's done you apparently get 2 more confirmations before your appointment. You'd think this is scheduling surgery or something. This has got to be the most inane, idiotic approach to scheduling I have ever seen. Everywhere else on the planet, when you hit CONFIRM, that's that. You're in. Why am I, the customer, who made an appointment, being asked to do so much work just to keep it? But what if I don't show up, you're asking? H&N has my CC on file, so if the policy is you get charged if you don't show up, and I've acknowledged that somewhere on their site or by simply booking the appt, then that's on ME. Luckily, Alicia was able to get me in after first agreeing the stay late, but then her last appt canceled so I got in sooner. But if I had driven all that way just to be told my appt I definitely booked wasn't going to happen for a WEEK... this review would've had a harsher tone. I'm not jumping through a series of hoops to keep an appt I made and if that's going to be the policy here in perpetuity then I'll spend my money elsewhere.

That's why I stayed with them even when other locations had lower rates or the same rate. It had worked for me... until this week. I checked my bank statement yesterday and saw a $96 charge. That's a 20% hike with zero warning - no email, no text, & nothing in the app. I searched every folder in my archived inbox (I keep everything) and found nothing from this location. When I texted the shop, they said "We emailed you in May." If they did, it never got to me. I haven't even been able to get a service here since Dec 16th 2024 because appointments are impossible to find due to my schedule. I've been driving to other H&N locations just to use the membership I'm paying for. The good: - Most barbers are pretty solid, though results can be hit-or-miss with a couple - The owner's wife does fantastic job with facial waxing - The owner himself seemed friendly (on the couple of times I've met him) The bad: - Surprise price hike for longtime members. - No verifiable notice or prior explanation. - Limited appointment availability at my "home" location. I asked them to cancel my membership on the spot - paying nearly a hundred bucks a month for something I can rarely book there (and with no heads-up on price changes) isn't worth it. Other H&N locations that I go to have membership fees (for new members of $80-$88 a month like at Valencia or Echo Park. It's too bad they couldn't have done these price hikes with more finesse and not just hiking me up to new-members rate

My hair was roughly 5"+ when I went to get it cut. I go to Gina again and ask for the same thing as last time: shortened and blended, a very simple haircut. And it looked fine when she gelled it before I left. However, when I washed it out I realized the top was significantly longer than the sides. You ever see that 1991 kids movie Rock-a-Doodle? That's what I got. I was very uncomfortable with it, so a couple days after I texted her about my concerns and ask if she could shorten the top to look blended with the sides like I had asked. She agreed on a date to come in, but cancels the day of in favor of another client. We reschedule, and she cancels the day of yet again. This is what happened next via text message: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- GINA: Very sorry, but can't make it to work today. I was supposed to of moved yesterday, but my apartment wasn't available. So moving today. ME: Okay. When is it possible? ME: Friday? GINA: No, next week. Monday Tues or Wednesday. ME: Alright let's do Monday asap GINA: why do you want a redo haircut. Because I didnt cut enough on top? ME: Yes, because it's not blended at all. The sides are buzzed and the top is very long. It's okay with gel, but looks strange without GINA (buckle up...): If you didn't like your haircut, go somewhere else. And don't take six months to get a haircut and expect a perfect cut. I should of charged you more. ME: Are you kidding me? It looks terrible without gel and is an easy fix. Are you seriously not going to fix it? GINA: No, go somewhere else. ME: Lol sure. Good luck with your rent. GINA: With people like you doesn't pay my rent. I have clients that pay me rent for the month! Go to Supercuts or Sport Clips. ME: Angry? You did a poor job this time. Last time was good, but you need to learn to accept constructive criticism without lashing out. It's unprofessional. GINA: Then go somewhere else!! Asap ME: I already said I am. I think this text conversation will be my yelp review GINA: Ohh so scared! GINA: And I will respond, too! GINA: And please I need a bad review on Groupon, too! ME: It's a hack job, and your childish response makes it more comedy than critical at this point. But your response will tell me that I got to you. Maybe you'll cool off and learn from this. GINA: I have the right to refuse a service. Goodbye. ME: Oh my god I already said I'm going somewhere else. But if your refusing service makes you feel better then go for it. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So if a client is uncomfortable with their cut, and requests a quick adjustment to what they asked for, Gina will tell them to never come back? Sadly, yes in my experience. Instead of listening to her client, or simply wanting to help resolve a concern like a professional adult (which would have taken literally 5 minutes), she chose to lash out completely unprovoked like an embarrassing child. Maybe it's because I used the word "strange"? Because that's when her temper tantrum began. This is not how a reasonable well adjusted adult responds, much less a professional. This review isn't intended to rate her haircutting ability. She seems okay enough at that. This is intended to illustrate Gina's character regarding the way she handles herself as a professional, and how she handles her client's concerns when they arise. It was unprofessional, childish, shameful, and embarrassing. And (now) it's rather humorous since my wife just buzzed that choppy disaster off of my head. Oh well, I guess not all those who are an adult behave like an adult. *** IF THIS REVIEW IS FILTERED, I WILL HAPPILY EDIT/RESUBMIT TO REMOVE ANY OFFENDING PORTION AND COMPLY WITH ANY OF YELP'S POLICIES POTENTIALLY BREACHED. ***
