    Universiade Pavilion - Unmissable landmark.

The real name for this place is the Universiade Pavilion - but it's, more appropriately, called the…read moreButterdome by everyone. For obvious reasons. It's shaped as a giant block and painted a golden yellow. When I moved here, I saw it from a distance and thought it was an unfinished building with exposed inner walls. I always thought it looked like the inside of a Crunchie chocolate bar, a giant block of sponge toffee. Garish and giant as it is, it's a landmark, which is a good thing on a big campus, so many people have a love-hate relationship to it. It's right next to the sports hub of the university and it is used for big events, like concerts, sports meets, craft sales and also had an indoor climbing gym which is open to the public as well. I've been there on more than one occasion and it's a great place for a concert or just to use as a landmark when giving directions. Hard to miss a big block of butter...

I've been here to write exams over the years of my various degrees -- stressful and the desks aren't amazing either but this is a good use of the space. I've been here for at least one concert and it was a neat venue for this party! I've also really enjoyed watching/participating in sports activities here -- which is really the reason that the building exists, it having been constructed for the 1983 Universiade if I remember correctly. This is an essential facility for a University of this size. And while I do not visit it terribly frequently I think that it is still well used and in good shape for hosting the many events and activities that it does over the years!

Stairs. Everyone's worst enemy lol. (Even those crazy fit…read morepeople!) I haven't actually been to a game here This review is specifically for the special privileged use for the stadium (specifically the stairs)! Thank you to November Project for scoring another great summer at the stadium stairs! (see NP's twitter for details ) If you thought the Royal Glenora and Wolf Willow stairs were hard, think again! Commonwealth Stadium has rows upon rows of extra steps of all varieties, from the lower bowl's shallow wide steps to deeper shorter steps, to the upper bowl's almost-scary even steeper staircases! (Like you're hiking down an Aztec ruin haha) But wait, there's more! You only get 30-45 minutes to get er' done! (Or to challenge those once a month 96'er specials - do the WHOLE stadium in ONE hour!!! Bahahaha!) Feeling the burn yet?

Being that this was a sold out Grey Cup game, there were a LOT more fans in attendance than usual. The biggest negative we encountered was the lack of staff directing traffic at the ends of the stadium. We ended up being stuck in the middle of a barely moving crowd for so long that we missed some of the opening ceremony. It was very dangerous and scary to be trapped in the middle of that, especially when security and the police came running through to attend to a situation. This was poor planning on the part of the stadium and luckily ended up being uneventful for us. The upside from what I saw, was that the concessions, 50/50 sellers and beer hawkers seemed to be reasonably efficient. The halftime show was absolutely amazing, the fly-overs awe inspiring and the game was pretty good too. All things considered, we had a great time. It's just a shame the Red Blacks didn't win...
