Spotlight is a haberdashery haven for anyone who loves sewing, quilting, knitting, scrapbooking, crafting, costume and jewellery making, crocheting and pretty much anything else you can think of. Their stores are so wildly popular amongst crafty types because they are undoubtedly one of the cheapest places to get everything you need for your next project. The one downside I find to Spotlight is that while they have plenty of cheap basic fabrics, they're mostly just that-cheap. A lot of the better quality fabrics I come in looking for I end up going to Lincraft or Gardam's for. I still love their sales though, when you can get half-price EVERYTHING, including dress patterns, fabric, sheets, rugs-just everything. Sign up for a members card and you will get notifications of all their sales and extra discounts, sometimes even gift vouchers, just for writing down your email address. read more
Wedding - Bonboniere Parcels Birthdays - Cake tins, lollipop sticks, foils for the platform, lollypop molds, cooking chocolate in pink Parties - Hats, streamers, bubbles for the kids, plastic flowers and table decorations, balloons. Spotlight has it all. I know, i've done all of the above. Gotten engaged, married and celebrated 3 almost 4 next week kids parties. I've baked the cakes for them too and the cake pops. I've done it all. These guys have a pretty extensive scrapbooking section with the connectors, the extra pages, the cutters, the glue and whatnot. They also have a pretty good range of garment supplies for your sewing pleasures. I got some stuffing here and made a stuffed monkey for my kids with some cute material offcuts you can buy here too. Paints - where do I start? Acryllic, oil, water. Palettes, canvasses you name it, they have it. They have brushes and artist tools, and screws and glues and pencils (2b, 3b, 4b...) it's a pretty good range. You can usually find what you need most times. It's one of those hodge podge of many things artsy places and it's also quite big, and the ladies here are super helpful. I've been getting crafty ideas and plastic jugs here for many years and I don't think i'll be stopping anytime soon. Bonus - Craft workshops for the community. read more
If you're from America, you know that "Michaels" is the best ever when it comes to all your crafting needs. I never thought I was missing it though, until the day came where I needed to create a gift and it hit me that there is not a Michaels craft store in Australia. So, I was directed to Spotlight. I took the escalator down into the entrance and walked into craft heaven. I initially took it upon myself to hunt for wooden clothes pins and woven string, but didn't have any luck finding them. I walked back to the front to enquire with the woman at the register and she gleefully directed me to the correct department. It was hard to not get distracted walking through the aisles. Aside from all the crafting essentials, there is tons of home decor at discount prices (throw pillows, candles, wall hangings, art pieces, you name it!) I saw some cute signs that advertised different art classes for a few selected dates as well. Apparently you can become a member of spotlight and receive further discounted coupons etc, I had to hold back from this for my wallets sake. read more

This Spotlight gives other Spotlights a bad name. I have been to them on the Gold Coast and when I moved to Brisbane this was my local. I started visiting this one for the random item I needed and every time I am blown away by how messy and disorganised the store is, and how disinterested the staff seem. I had to exchange something once and it took literally 30 minutes, the cashier decided it was more important to serve everyone else before me (I lined up twice - once to tell them I would be returning something and the second when I had picked my exchange). The range is pretty good but good luck finding out what the price is for that item, and why is there so much merchandise all over the floor?? I think this is just this is the place where retail and customer service goes to die. ps. My husband seemed to think that all Spotlights were like this one, so we went to the one in the Homemaker Centre in the Valley, he was amazed.... and he was very confused by why our local is so horrible and why we keep going there - Well the answer is because it is in walking distance! read more
Arts. Crafts. Prue and Tru. Yes, I feel it is entirely appropriate to adopt the accents of Prue and Tru when shopping in Spotlight. All jokes aside, Spotlight is one of those "take for granted" stores. You know it is there but it isn't a shop I usually associate with being a place I'd find what I need. That is until I started in a job that is a blank canvas for being as creative, D.I.Y orientated and fun as your imagination limits. Recently while making a mobile phone charging station I was on the hunt for a wooden tissue box holder and found myself wandering the aisles of Spotlight. Sure I'd already found exactly what I'd come into the shop for but I was sticking around as I was amazed at the array of other bits and bobs they had I could use: costumes, bake wear, party decorations and more. Spotlight, you surprised me. Just don't tell anyone that I dare say I'll be calling back in sooner rather than later. read more

I love most Spotlight shops. For the variety, quality and endless possibilities of creating something cool. But there is one reason I don't like this Spotlight as much as the others. There's a snooty checkout person who isn't very customer friendly. I found most of the other staff to be genuinely nice and helpful. My mother and i went on a shopping spree here taking advantage of the mega sales they had of bed sheets. After our shopping we had a look at our purchases and I found one of the bedsheet packages had been cut by a Stanley knife. We rushed back to Spotlight to arrange a refund or exchange. When we got there we spoke to this checkout person and she seemed uninterested in helping out. She said they didn't have any of the same in stock and we would need to choose something else. I had to suggest to her to check other stores. She 'huffed' then said she'd call around. She got back to us to inform me that there is in another store. She did not bother to inform me if I could reserve it, pick it up, get it transferred. So I felt as though I had to ask 20 questions to figure what to do. Ah her service is crap! Made me so frustrated. In the end, I no longer had the energy to organise an exchange, so I said I'll get a refund. She said, "We don't normally do refunds on sale items". I 'huffed' and said, "Guess you're going to have to now since I got sold a faulty product". Thank goodness for the other friendly staff in this store, otherwise I would be completely turned off from coming here. read more

Shoddy products and variable service. I have had sheets from Spotlight run in a cold wash and ruin some clothes, and washable placemats disintegrate in a gentle wash. Yesterday I bought a table cloth for my new table. I was mystified when it was too short - table is 211 x 107 cm, and cloth was labelled as 230 x150 cm. So I measured the cloth - 217 x 142 cm! I have been happy with their dress fabrics and sewing notions, but I wouldn't buy any of their home wares! read more

I do from time to time pop in a spotlight store, this time i needed wadding which i use to buy by the metre but on this occasion it is now being sold prepacked. I had to ask a few people to find. Interesting how much more expensive it is to buy prepacked and i did not even need half but had no option. I asked one of the staff and she said more and more of there things that can be changed to prepacked will be sold this way. This place is most times knee deep with woman holding on rolls lined up to be served, beware you need to get a number to be served in the fabric section so don't just line up. read more
