I ordered the special -- steak and shrimp, served with corn, baked potato, and a side of French onion soup. The steak was requested medium, but it was cut so thin there was no way to cook it properly; I'd rate it 3/10. The corn was undercooked -- 1/10. The shrimp came as five deep-fried pieces, nothing special -- 4/10. The baked potato was cooked but a bit hard -- 6/10. The French onion soup was okay, not great -- 5.2/10. Dessert was a coconut cream pie that tasted bland and definitely not homemade -- 2/10. Overall, I'd give the meal a 4.7/10. The highlight was definitely the service -- friendly and attentive staff that made the experience better despite the disappointing food. read more

Hometown cooking that tastes so good! Every time we go visit friends and family in the area, we eat breakfast here with my mother. We have never had lunch or dinner here, so I can only comment on breakfast. Atmosphere: it is a clean restaurant with two separate dining areas. There is a small area in the front with a few tables near the counter area. The back room is larger with quite a few tables and booths. Staff: all of the staff members have been polite, helpful, and attentive. They have been quick to attend to our requests and ensured our beverages were always full. Food: no matter what we've ordered for breakfast, it was always exceptional! It arrived promptly at the correct temperature and in large amounts. The orders are large, so if you are hungry, you will be satisfied. The prices are perfect...I could pay the same amount at a fast food joint and still be hungry. Spring Garden is a fairly new restaurant in Pana. There is also one in Taylorville, which has been there for quite a few years and has a reputation for good food. The menu at Spring Garden is huge! They have a very wide variety to choose from - - seafood, chicken, pasta dishes, steaks, and a large breakfast selection as well. The prices are decent, a little higher than you might expect a small-town restaurant to be, but you get a LOT of food for your money! Be sure to come there hungry, and be prepared to ask for a to-go box! I tried the Walleye the last time I was there and it was very good. I have also tried their chicken, which was excellent. Others in my group tried the shrimp, the Chicken Parmesan, and the Liver & Onions. All were pronounced to be wonderful. One thing I did not like was that there are no low-fat salad dressing options. I would like to have a light ranch or french, but decided to opt for the Italian as it was not as heavy as some of the others. We eat there frequently. Tonight I discovered the country chops! Not on the menu but on the board. They are so yummy! Breaded and deep fried with white gravy. They always make an effort to take care of our wants. They will deep fry your American fries if you ask! That makes them pretty darn good. It is the place to take your whole family. My wife & I stopped here on a day trip. It was 8pm. Friendly greeting, immediate service, the normal expected wait for freshly fried chicken. Chicken was great and perfectly cooked. Wife's burger was big & good as were the fries. Even came with a big bowl (not cup) of ham & bean soup which was also excellent. Our server was wonderful and seemed to sincerely want us to have a great experience. The cost is very fair and inexpensive. Definitely well worth the money and we will return. read more

The food is okay but some times it tastes a little old, or a tiny bit dirty. The staff is nice and they do their job. I am a little confused on the design of the restaurant. I am not a fan of the dark green walls it looks strange to me in my opinion. It is a decent place to bring about 5-7 people because of the cost. Ordered one of the dinner specials: Ribeye & Shrimp. Came with a choice of soup or salad and choice of potato (baked, mashed, home fries, hash browns, or potato wedges). I had the mashed, which did NOT taste like they came out of a can or had been sitting on a warmer shelf for 12 hours. The brown gravy, while not supremely delicious, was tasty and better than I had expected. Steak was delicious and not dried out or tough. They missed the "medium well" doneness request towards the "well done" side but I normally expect that when I order a steak and it came out exactly the way I like my steaks. Shrimp were butterflied and battered, which is also how I like my shrimp - Your Mileage May Vary. They were also delicious. The shrimp were served on a bed of chopped lettuce, which was soaked in the ribeye juices. Most delicious bed of lettuce I've ever tasted. :-) The vegetable of the day was corn. Oddly enough, the corn did NOT taste bad. Many restaurants will serve lifeless and tasteless corn, like it's been sitting around all day waiting to be served. This corn was actually pretty good. All in all - great meal. One of the better steak dinners I've had in quite a long time. The only real downside was the dinner roll served with the meal. While not bad, it was a ciabatta-style roll that had the internal consistency of a biscuit - dry and fairly tasteless. Put some butter on it and it was much better. Would have preferred some normal dinner rolls but it made sopping up the ribeye juices much easier. ;-) My daughter had the chicken alfredo and also got a dinner salad with her meal. The chicken was very flavorful and the sauce was very tasty. Two thumb's up for the food! As a side note, the coffee was surprisingly tasty and not burnt or overcooked in any way. I truly enjoyed my coffee with the meal. Service was good - the waitress was very friendly and attentive - came and refilled my coffee twice and asked if I wanted more after I paid the bill. Very good. Decor may be dark (as some other reviewers point out), but I found it very homey. Again, YMMV. read more
