What is green burial? That is the first thing the Hospice social worker asked as she offered to…read moreassist in finding a funeral home to take mom's body. I could describe it, but did not realize finding a funeral home knowledgeable of the process would be such a task especially at 2 am. The social worker and I Googled a few places and waited for call backs. One location called back and were very derogatory about the cemetery that my mother had chosen, which quickly left an extremely sour taste in my mouth. However, though they were negative and answered very few of my questions, the funeral director did mention there is a Green Burial Council that certifies funeral homes in green burial and their website has a list of certified funeral homes across the country. As we scrolled, we found Routsong. The social worker called as I being the nerd I am looked for online reviews. They were a funeral home I wasn't familiar with nor had anyone in the family used and at 2am I definitely couldn't make a Facebook post for intel as mom needed a place to go ASAP. From the initial conversation to handling the final payment, Routsong has been a godsend. Through the process of planning my mother's celebration of life, I worked closely with Sam Routsong. I found him to be extremely helpful, personable, and knowledgeable. He also helped with working with the insurance companies and cemetery on my behalf, which took a lot off my plate! Planning a memorial is akin to planning a wedding there are so many minute details that can easily be overlooked, but Sam made sure nothing was overlooked and communication was flowing. This was especially helpful as I can be a little OCD when it comes to planning things. He made sure I was able to visit the florist and gave the final ok on the flowers for the memorial. He "officiated" mom's grave side service and he was tremendously attentive to myself and the guest at mom's actual memorial... even to the point where people were like "do I smell cookies baking?" And they did and were served warm cookies and other refreshments as the visitation progressed. Even everyone who attended the memorial were impressed by the service and venue. I cannot speak highly enough of all that Sam and the Routsong family did for me during this difficult time. And I know you want to know the answer to the million dollar question!!! COST... Though I've never paid for a funeral nor memorial before, I found them to be extremely reasonable and accommodating. Whether you have a set budget or the sky's the limit they want to ensure your "vision" is executed without "burying" you in debt. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Routsong family when it comes time for your loved one to transition!

Do not recommend, worst experience, disrespectful to family…read more A moral issue that was very disrespectful to my Mother and our family. This has caused additional emotional distress and added to the grieving process. The entire experience with Tufts was overwhelmingly stressful. Cutting my Mothers hair, not returning phone calls, the sub-standard work by Tufts Riverview Monuments, and the lack of compassion has prolonged the stress and emotional anguish over the tragic loss of our Mother for several months. Tufts cut my Mother's hair very short without contacting our family for permission. It was very short and tightly curled. It didn't even resemble her, they radically changed her appearance. Her hair was always long. On the day of the funeral, our family was completely shocked and appalled to see what they did to her hair. Previously, I told Julie Tipton that her hair was very thin and gave her a headband for her hair. Photos were also emailed prior to the funeral. Pushing her hair back with the headband (which everyone knows that is what a headband is for) and combing her hair straight was what should have been done. Their total disregard about this issue made us feel like our Mother and family was unimportant and just another number. We paid in full the day of the funeral ($13074.12) and the perception that they demonstrated to us was "they were paid, it's over and done with, it's your issue". Tufts was not even professional enough to return a call to a grieving family regarding an issue that was very important to them; such a lack of compassion. Calls: 1. I left a message for Julie Tipton at the front desk. No return call. 2. I called Larry Schildmeyer. He was standoffish; expressed no concern about her hair other than they had "someone" come in to do hair, and that he would check into it. They also made an error on my Mothers cards. He said he would check into that as well and call me back. He left a message regarding the cards, but no response regarding my Mother's hair. 3. I called the office and asked to leave a message for Larry Schildmeyer that I still wanted a response regarding her hair. No return call. 4. A few days later I called and spoke to Linda, the office manager, who said she would check into it and call me back. No return call. 5. Visit: Another trip to the funeral home had to be made to pick up corrected cards. The person at the front desk told my friend that after a body is embalmed, their hair becomes very brittle; they have to cut it to do anything with it other than use a wig. THIS IS NOT TRUE. I checked with another funeral home who assured me that it is always customary to ask the family prior to cutting hair unless there is head trauma. They also informed me hair does not change texture and is just washed after embalming and can be styled. Tufts Riverview Monument Company did an extremely poor job of engraving the information on the existing cemetery monument. Another shock for our family causing more emotional distress. Peggy Schildmeyer acknowledged the poor quality job they performed, and said she could not assure us they could correct it without causing damage to the monument (prior cost for monument $3223.72). She reimbursed us with a $250 check that we initially paid them to have the work done. The check, in no way, relieves the emotional distress due to the constant reminder when visiting the monument because of the permanence of such a poor quality job.
