I know I know if you live in a big city Agawam's library may not impress but this is a little New England town people. Definitely the best library I've ever frequented. Books/Videos/online services: My favorite thing about this library is the fact that they are linked with a ton of other local libraries so even if they don't have your book they can get it from one of the neighboring libraries. They even have great shows you can get on DVD like Sopranos, the Wire, The Walking Dead, etc... not to mention most of the new releases that are available on Redbox. They also give you updates to your email when your books arrive and when they're due. You can also extend your books online. Ok people I realize that all libraries probably due it these days but hey its the 1st time I've ever used these features. Books upon books, right when you walk through the door they have a pretty awesome wooden parquet floor, community room to your right, art adorning the walls by local artists and a section for new arrivals. To the left is a very comprehensive kids section with computers, a children activity room, and a little play area for toddlers. The rest of the library is dedicated to the all of the other books, video's and magazines. They even have backpacks prepacked for book clubs how cool is that. I also love listening to books on tape for long road trips and they have a pretty great selection ( Cracker whaaattt). Staff: Always very helpful with finding a book, resetting your pin for the umpteenth time, and checking out an obscene amount of items. They also have a Keurig machine with K cups galore and if you ask nicely they may even help you make a cup(they even have hot chocolate.) Overall Impression: This place is outstanding especially considering the population of Agawam is ~ 29,000. Check this place out

Place is well set & in order & if you need to print off the computer if you have no smartphone or printer from your computer this is a good one for thus. A…read morecool fact about Union is that it was the last town settled east of the Connecticut River, they can thank their rocky terrain and crummy soil for that. This two-sided marker from the CT Historical Commission, with the familiar white lettering on a blue background, is located just on the side of Route 190 (Buckley Highway) adjacent to a small town green. The inscription is the same on both sides. The marker dates to 1978 and is in very good condition. One amazing fact I learned was that when the marker was set in 1978, the town's population was just 500 -the same population it had in 1756. What's today's population? The Town of Union's website reports "the census of 2000 showed the population of Union at 694". The markers full inscription reads: This was the last town to be settled east of the Connecticut River, because of it's rough terrain and poor soil. In 1633 John Oldham, an adventurer from Massachusetts, obtained from the Indians here specimens of black lead or graphite. During the Revolutionary War this valuable resource was tapped by Governor. Trumbull for use at cannon foundries. Union, containing 12.500 acres, was sold by the General Assembly on July 1. 1720 to twelve proprietors for £307. The earliest actual settler, James McNall, came here in 1727. The first Connecticut census in 1756 showed the population of Union at five hundred, approximately the same as today. Lumbering was a leading industry during the 19th century. Shoes and axe handles were also made here. The only surviving industries are agriculture, forestry and the manufacture of charcoal. Union is now mainly a residential community.

So I stopped here to simply use this parking lot. And with that done, I thought I would step in to check it out. Holy smokes! This is an amazing library and there were two amazing librarians working today that were super awesome. Downstairs, a massive "maker lab" with paper crafting, a laser cutting machine and a 3D printer. What? Yes! Upstairs, a big space filled with books and DVDs and computers. Not really a great place to "work" from as they didn't have study carrels but a great place to study or just do library things. Look at where this place is on the map. This is an absolutely wonderful place to hike with incredibly interesting massive rock, boulder…read moreand shear cliff formations throughout most of the trails. The spot was formerly the hunting ground for native Americans who inhabited the surrounding; natural rock formations provided temporary shelter and living space while local tribes were on the hunt. All trails are clearly marked making this spot a fascinating way to spend and hour or two taking in the reservation's natural beauty.

The Viets family of East Granby operated a farm and livestock business on this site for many years…read more After the business closed, the land came into the possession of the Town of East Granby, who converted it into an almost 500 acre public park with a recreation center and hiking trails. In a beautiful nod to it's prior owners, the Town not only decided to leave the Viets Farm concrete silo standing, but also commissioned the painting of a mural on it to serve as a huge welcome sign to the park. It stands in the main parking lot entrance to the complex on Route 187. The gorgeous color mural covers every square inch of the silo with a lovely farm motif of animals, scenery and a blue sky. The original lettering was left undisturbed: L. H. VIETS & SONS CATTLE & HORSES It really is a gorgeous and very unexpected sight to see!!
