We arrived earlier than our friends but were greeted at the door by a very cheerful, 'front of house', young lady. OK, let me say, this was somewhat unexpected at 9.00 am. She was a delight. Took our order for coffee prior to our friends, held up in traffic, arriving. After a while the four of us ordered breakfasts, all different. Timing was brilliant as it gave us time for a good chatter before eating. The time taken for the food to arrive proved that everything was cooked to order, not that we doubted it. Food, in all cases was delicious and filling. Full English with wonderful bacon, Egg Benedict with a couple of extra rashers of bacon (my friend stated he wished he hadn't ordered the extra), Scrambled egg with smoked salmon and, finally, Poached egg on avocado with sour dough toast. Can't be beaten anywhere. With a pricing that was, also, impossible to beat. Nice atmosphere for the time of the day. Comfortable seating. Very clean, in fact sparkling clean. Interesting décor. There's been a serious dip in service. We used to come here often and it was always consistent and good. This time we all got settled for a post boxing day walk beverage and my bro in law went to the bar. A full 10 mins later we were told no hot drinks. They had 1 guy behind the bar and one serving food. Not on! They shouldve had a sign up saying no food no coffees. Pretty poor!

To start, with two scones, 2x 3 types of finger sandwiches and 3 desserts, one Special Afternoon Tea is enough for two, with the addition of another pot of tea. Of course not knowing anything, I started with the scone with clotted cream and jam. As a starter, it worked for me. Great texture on their scone - slightly crunchy, crumbly outside with a moist inside. Their sandwiches were delightfully light, but had good, subtle flavor. You get cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon and Suffolk ham sandwiches with the special. The latter two served with a clotted cream. The desserts were also excellent. Can't complain about a good macaroon, and the tart had good flavor. The Oreo cheesecake was good, but unfortunately it was no New York cheesecake. I did appreciate the tiny Oreo on top! The service started off rocky with the waitress not seeing us apparently. After that, things went smoothly. Even though I don't have much experience with afternoon tea, I can't imagine other places doing much better. I definitely recommend this place.

Overall, an average experience that is boosted only by the decor and setting of the tearoom. Honestly, I think Patisserie Valerie's cakes are better, but is much less of an "experience" given that PatVal is a pretty common chain now!

They do a reasonable choice of sandwiches, crisps etc. They also serve soup and have a good selection of some very tasty (and fattening) cakes. I asked if they didnt serve this as the norm, I'd pay extra to have some jam & cream, but they said they couldnt do that. It was the driest, hardest I have ever had. .When I pointed this out to the lady serving, she didnt appologise, but just said thats how they are. My breakfast at Timbers surpassed every meal I've had here. I had the Big Breakfast which was more like HUGE breakfast! The sausage, bacon and mushrooms were super flavorful and the eggs were cooked perfectly! I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone visiting or living in Colchester. Will definitely be back to try their lunch and dinner.

The food is good too, nothing too mind blowing but good solid fare. My dad had the tomato soup and I had a roast beef sandwich, with thick slices of beef and a good side salad. The soup was the star with all the food made on site. I caught a glimpse of the quiche and got some serious food envy. I held off from the cakes but they looked scrumptious! I'll be coming back for the cream tea and it was fun to treat my folks, with the prices reasonable. The only downside was the individual tea pots as they were so kitsch.

Service was friendly, coffee was very good and the pastry was very fresh, not too sweet, and with yummy, melts-in-your-mouth cream. I wish i had a photo of the place: the backyard is not too large. It ends in a wooden hedge on one side and a mossy brick wall on another. The far end overlooks a few large trees. There are a few simple bistro sets in red, each with a ceramic teapot center piece, used as a flower pot :) Peaceful, quiet, beautiful ambient and a tasty pastry and coffee. I purchased a raspberry pastry, a strawberry tart and a brownie as most others would be a bit messier for a picnic. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. The brownie was average, the raspberry and strawberry pastries however were excellent! The strawberry tart seemed to use custard as opposed to my preferred creme patissiere but was excellent nonetheless. We will be back to give Tom's cake a better try.
