Elite Service - Our AC unit.

    Elite Service

    (4 reviews)

We have been having a problem with our outside AC unit making a weird noise for the past 2 weeks…read more It was off and on and it wasn't loud enough to bother the neighbors but loud enough for it to get on my nerves every time the AC kicked on. I decided to make a recording of the noise for the technician because everyone knows-- when you have something that's not working correctly as soon as you get someone else to look at it--- it works perfectly. I called Elite up and made an appointment for them to come out. They were just out here in April and everything was fine. (2 months ago) At that time we opted to pay $149 for them to service our unit twice a year. By doing this it allowed us to get a 10% discount on our bill with a flat service fee of $89 for each visit. It wasn't a huge discount but it was a discount nevertheless. Well, the day the tech came out wouldn't you know it...NO NOISE! I let him hear the recording and he said he really couldn't do much if the unit wasn't acting up while he was there. I was assured that if it happened again I wouldn't be charged another $89 for him to come out and look at it again because it would be for the same issue. A few days passed and again the noise was off and on. I made another appointment for them to come out and this time the tech was able to hear it and work on finding what was wrong with it. He got the motor changed out ($300 plus) and put the AC back together. It was better but it was still making a noise. It was different from the first noise but it was still making noise. This is where I kinda got upset with the tech because the first thing he says after he puts the fan and AC back together is that the noise is coming from the pump. I asked him to do some readings to make sure everything was running at the right amps and I asked a lot of questions like could it be the fan blade is off balance, maybe the AC is not level and causing it to be off balance. I even went and got the paper that the last tech gave me back in April so he could compare the numbers. No matter what I asked him to check or look at he was hell bent on telling me it was the pump. I asked how much that would be to replace and he looked at his price sheet and said $1000 plus (I forget the exact amount) but it would be better for us to just buy a new unit. At this time I was getting upset because I felt like he wasn't really trying to look for every possible issue it could be. He just wanted to put a new unit in. The AC unit is only 8 yes old (TRANE) and at our last check 2 months ago everything was fine so I told him to take the cover and fan back off and to check the inside again. I could tell he was upset but it was my money and I wanted to be ABSOLUTELY SURE everything was checked before we had to spend that kind of money. He complied and took the cover off and I took my hand and felt the pump unit inside (there's only 3 parts, the pump, the motor and the fan) the part moved when I rocked it so I told him to screw it down because it was loose. He still told me that it was the pump and that the coolant wasn't getting through the hose into the house. He asked if we had problems with the house getting cool. I told him No and he told me that that was hard to believe because the hose wasn't getting enough coolant through. Did he check the hoses? Of course not. He did another reading on something inside and every test he did was in tolerance and reading ok but again, he said it was the pump. At this point I told him to just put everything back together and that I would have to talk to my husband about what to do next. He gave me the bill and told me that he would have a guy get in touch with me about getting a new unit. So he leaves and about 20 minutes later he calls back and says that he forgot to hook the condenser back up and left a cap off of one of the valves so he would have to come back. Really dude?! So, I'm sure you can imagine all the things going on in my mind at that moment. Well, he comes back and he has the sales guy with him. (I find out later that this gentleman used to work on AC units a long time ago and that he is now the sales/service manager) This older gentleman listens to the AC unit and the noise and he says that it's NOT the pump but sounds like something to do with the fan and the tech had the nerve to agree with him. I was dumbfounded that he would stand there and agree with him after trying to push a $1000 part/new unit on me 20 minutes ago. So the older guy tells the tech to take the cover off and take the fan blade off and run the unit. He does this and guess what? NO NOISE!!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME! So, we ended up paying $60 for a new fan blade and now no more noise!! Now our house isn't blowing air as cold as it was before the tech messed with our AC and I don't even want to call them back out to check it because of all this crap I had to deal with this last time. I guess we'll see in a few days....

The company always sends a technician out the same or next day. However, the repair would fail, and…read morethey usually had to send a tech out again about two weeks later. They usually warranty their work, but it is aggravating having the AC go down time and again. I recommend getting an estimate prior to the repair, because the company is high priced. Also request a copy of their labor warranty. There is no industry standard for heating and air systems. We had to call the office the next day to have a copy of the invoice emailed, as the on-site email system is unreliable. The company has some good reviews, so it's possible our experience may be an anomaly. Just be sure to ask questions, get documentation, and make sure you understand their billing and payment terms.
