There was beautiful organ music and singing during. The homily was short and the whole mass lasted about half an hour. I sat in the back right pew and was asked to bring up gifts for communion. The dress code for weekday mass was very casual, with outfits averaging jeans and sweatshirts. The building is also wheelchair assessable with a separate handicap entrance and wheelchairs were also offered to use. There was free parking during mass hours for those going for the ceremony. This is probably one of the easiest places downtown to visit with parking and location and I'd definitely recommend stopping here to enjoy the old unique building.

Visited St Gertrude's in Madeira today. It's a pretty church with stained glass windows and it has…read morea more modern feel to it. There was a policeman directing traffic before and after church. The entire church was filled for Sunday mass. In the beginning, we were disappointed because it was difficult to understand what was being said via the microphone & speaker system. At first I thought it was me, but all four of us thought the same thing. Apparently we aren't the only ones as there was an announcement today that there is to be a new sound system put in. Good move on their part as I really liked what I could hear well. Was really shocked to see that there were 10 altar servers! I've never seen more than 4. It was nice to see so many youths wanting to participate during mass. The priest tried to make the homily a little more relatable; while discussing "Judge not, lest ye be judged" he used the popular vernacular of "don't judge me, bro". There is a lot of activity going on at St Gertrudes. Next week-end is the Pancake Breakfast, Children's Choir, Adult's Choir, Bible Study, Ladies of Charity, Marriage Enrichment Seminar, Scouts, Prayer Group, etc. There is a residency for Dominican Friars there and that is a wonderful blessing for the church and parishioners. Also, St Gertrudes has Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration! No wonder people are willing to drive a distance to come here.

Best damn preaching in the city!…read more Dominicans are known for their preaching but with a half dozen or more priests always in residency because of the seminary here, you are bound to find several you love and all are at least very good from the pulpit. Also with that many priest, if you want to set an appointment, they will be very accommodating, how many parishes can offer this level of service anymore?! None. Worth the trip. Families travel as far as an hour to go to mass at St. Gertrude. Saturday offers two confession times and three priests are usually hearing confessions and still they are are busy. The Holy Spirit is moving here. The best part is perpetual adoration, you no longer have to go to the Holy Spirit Center or Immaculate Heart of Mary for that.

My friends and I ventured here for a Fish Fry during Lent. Parking was easy, and there were plenty of people on staff to make this popular event run smoothly. By the main entrance, there was a "to go" table, where people wanting take away fish could pay and order. Those like us, who were dining in, were sent to the rear of the building to pay, receive a meal ticket, and hand it off to a volunteer who would fill our order. The volunteers were mainly pre-teens who did an adorable job of bringing us our food. For $8.00, we had a gigantic filet of fish and three sides. I opted for mac n' cheese, hush puppies, and cole slaw. All of these were homemade and delicious. The slaw was heavy on the sauce, which I spread onto my fish as a garnish. They also serve beer for a few dollars extra, or you can have lemonade which is included in your meal. The community hall is very spacious; almost feels like a gymnasium. The dining area was spaced out and accommodated the crowd. Plus the tables held a lot of people: we squeezed over 10 people in at our table. Each week, the Codfathers aka fish cook, dress in different themed outfits. This week, it was Roman Togas. Overall, I'd say this is a pretty great fish fry! Price per person: $8.00

For $8 I got…read morethe fish sandwich and three sides: fries, cole slaw and mac and cheese but after seeing the hush puppies on other's plates I wish I got those instead of the cole slaw because it wasn't all that great but admittedly, I'm picky about slaw. Draft beer is $3, soda and bottled water were $2 (I think) and they have complimentary water and lemonade, which the student servings offered to bring to our table. If the tartar sauce was homemade rather than packets, it would knock it out of the park! If you're new to this one, you might get a little confused by the set up especially if you enter through the community room (or what was the old gym) lobby where they're selling takeout orders. In that case, go through the big room, past two more tables until you're outside the gym and facing a table where you can place an order. Then, pay at the next table, then get seated and your ticket is taken to the kitchen and your order will be delivered by a friendly student! Other students walk around selling desserts. On our way out, we stopped I the kitchen to meet the cooks who were dressed in togas for that week's theme. You can tell they enjoy serving up the food each week!

I had no…read moreknowledge/previous involvement of the Presbyterian faith prior to attending New City, but I felt wanted and invited there all the same, and I found New City to be a place that truly lives out love, grace, and sacrifice. The attendants act out their faith through generous giving to those in need in Norwood, especially Sharpsburg students. Huge perk of New City: they have a great kids' ministry with separate classes for every age, so your child gets individualized attention and age-appropriate lessons while you're in the church service. All kids' ministry volunteers are background checked and trained. I highly encourage checking out New City, whether or not you have any faith background. You will be welcomed with open arms. Be sure to get there a little early so you can find street parking and grab a fresh cup of Deeper Roots coffee.

We visited this quaint little church recently and it reminded me of the little church of my youth. Very small and sweet looking. It seems that the entire upstairs is the sanctuary and below perhaps a meeting hall or something that might be used for dinners? The priest was really down to earth and he mentioned he had some health issues lately and got lots of cards, food and attention, but that he wasn't going to thank everyone by written card. He talked about individual church members because everyone seemed to know everyone. As a matter of fact, the young girl who handed out the bulletin every week was also selling girl scout cookies and that you could order some on the way out. It was a very intimate type of church to belong to and it felt very good to be there.

The church itself is a very pretty one. Although there seems to be ample parking behind the church, we did not find any signs leading us to where that parking might be. There used to be a school associated with this church, but there is no more. Because it was a snowy week-end, there were not many parishioners so we have no idea how many attend on a regular basis. It had a very different feel as it seemed a little more relaxed. For instance, towards the end of the services a little girl in the first row directly right in front of us was let down by her mother in front of the pews. The little girl began to dance along with the music which we thought was very sweet. After all, shouldn't we be moved by the hymns, if not physically, but spiritually. That would NEVER have happened at our church. There would have been tsk's, appalled looking faces and someone would have made her stop, if not her mother. I found it refreshing. The parishioners seemed to be friendly and the sermon a good one.
