The fish fry was very good with very generous sides of French fries, Cole slaw, potato salad and a huge slice of rye bread. The potato salad was very good, and not mayonnaisey. The Cole slaw was good, needed pepper. The bread was surprising as it must have been cut from a huge loaf. It was almost equal to two slices of regular rye bread, and very fresh. Only coffee and tea were complimentary. Soda, beer and water were for sale. There were pre-packed mini-muffins to take for dessert.

Whoever now manages the church/school is extremely insensitive to its neighbors. This church sits…read morein a residential area. However, during the summer, they hold a fund raiser outside, with a sound system, that goes well past the city's 10 PM noise ordinance cut off time. They have done this at least 2x, the police refuse to shut them down, and the church management doesn't respond to the concerns of the neighbors either before, during or after the event. Recently, without any warning to any of the neighbors with whom it shares a fence, it tore that fence down! The fence belonged to them, they had that right. But neighbors had relied on that fence for decades to keep young children and pets from escaping their back yards, and advance warning should have been given. Again, the church/school refused to return calls or respond to at least one letter from concerned neighbors. Finally, the church installed a new fence, illegally! Again, no response to neighbors. City code enforcement was contacted, and the church/school was required to fix the fence. They have partially done so, but not completely, although their deadline for doing so is fast approaching, It's so unfortunate that the church is behaving so poorly. They used to be a good neighbor.

For the Tuesday night we went, we got there about an hour early and the lot was already fairly full. Street parking was easy enough though, and at the end of the night was easier to leave. The hall is in a decent sized basement space. We snagged a spot with clear sight of the wall board and TVs. Games here are all sold a la carte. A three-face admission of regular games is $3 plus $1 to opt into the bonus ball. Then specials are all $2 per three-face, and $1 for early birds. I prefer a la carte board buying as an option because my husband plays fewer boards than me, so this works well for us and saves us some money. Payouts are pretty good here, with progressive special payouts up to over $2K on the night we were in. Regarding food, the concession had made-to-order fresh deli sandwiches, homemade soup, a variety of baked goods and donuts, and pepperoni pizza slices, plus the usual snacks, candy, coffee and sodas. Prices were all very reasonable, with a soup, sandwich and soda combo just $8, and $2 each for good-sized pizza slices. Overall we enjoyed our visit to a recent Tuesday night game at St. Andrew Sloan. The next time I'm free on a Tuesday, I look forward to making it back again, as well as trying the Saturday night game sometime soon.

Lafayette is a really great church in a great location at the corner of Lafayette Ave and Elmwood…read moreAve. I started coming here originally back in 2008 or so when I was living in the Elmwood Village and church hopping quite a bit. This place caught my interest. They hosted Ralph Nader when he was running, hosted a great fashion show with the Elmwood Village Association, they also hosted a soup kitchen. The church was so large, that they turned part of the building into apartments, in an effort to sustain the building. The apartments are unique and beautiful. The building is available for events and does a great job with them! Most importantly it is a loving and welcoming church. Always welcoming new people. They have a really great children's program during church, great chorus, and usually host coffee time following service. Services are at 10am. Check it out!

At 875 Elmwood, near Lafayette, is another large historic church complex. Built from Medina…read moresandstone its in the Roamesque Revival style, designed by the firm Lansing, Beierl and North, Shelgren in 1894. Its a large church, designed to hold 1000, built as the other churches were outgrown. It, like so many Buffalo churches, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its in Elmwood Village and has an active and eclectic (according to a friend who belongs) congregation. Ive never been here for a service, but Ive been here for a few meetings as they allow the use of their space.

I love the way it looks in the sunlight. It's not old or gothic at all, it's a very pristine, flowery, odern looking church, which really shines in the sunlight, as I said. It's brand new-looking but it's still got a lot of class and style and grace, and is a lovely sight at sunset and sunrise. I've only been inside it once, during a walking tour of Williamsville this past Fall, and it looks brand new and smells fresh and clean (like most of Williamsville does). I like going inside churches, but I admit I do prefer the old ones, such as in the UK and across Europe.
