Best place to donate men's clothing and know they're going where needed most. The donation process is a little complicated in that the street is actually closed to traffic. Someone at the head of the block will move the barrier and let you pass. Then you drive up to the building and if necessary someone will roll out a giant cart (like the kind you see laundry in a a big hotel) to help unload your car. I attended this program for over a month. I maitained sobriety, attended and participated in every class and diligently completed my chore/work assignments. Unfortunately there were some other clients with personal and mental issues that told lies about me to mislead my counselor, Mr Ken Campbell. I have a sleeping disorder that inconvenienced others and because of this they tried to make me out as disruptive There was no evidence of me doing anything wrong whatsoever. I was physically and violently approached twice because of my disorder by others and the counselor Ken said that I was the one causing issues which is far from the truth, totally unprofessional and quite unacceptable. I volunteered for the lunch shift and we served approximately 2,000 meals in about 4 hours! The staff that coordinate the volunteers are really kind and have an excellent method to their operations. If you haven't spent any time in the Civic Center area before and feel uncomfortable with the number of homeless people on the streets, don't worry, they won't bother you. I came into St. Anthony's several times as a volunteer on the meal service shift, serving the homeless or those in need during the lunch hour. It can be a bit intimidating at first, as you're situated in the heart of the Tenderloin and serving a few hundred people in a little under 2 hours. The full-time staff are pretty friendly overall, and they are not shy in correcting or helping volunteers who are unsure as to what they should be doing. I encountered a variety of really good, wholesome volunteers as well. Some were residents of SF, others were from others states who had traveled to volunteer in San Francisco and other major cities. In addition to interacting with volunteers, the experience also enables you to get to know some of the folks receiving meals. We are all human beings trying to do the best we can with the time we have, and working with the St. Anthony's Foundation reminds you of that. read more

The dining room is incredibly well run, staffed with the nicest employees and volunteers, and best of all are the guests we have the pleasure of serving. I bring a new group of volunteers to the dining room once a month and we always have a great time, and folks will often spin-off and bring their own groups (the fun times are contagious). I had to be in San Francisco today and wanted to drop off 3 bags of clothing to donate. When I got there I was asked if I had an appointment. I wasn't aware that I needed to make an appointment to make a donation. I was told by the so-called gentleman at the donation door that he would take the clothing even though I had not made an appointment, but that if I had more to donate they would not accept it without an appointment. There might be better ways to discourage people from doing a good deed, but am very hard-pressed to think of what they might be. read more

I was introduced to St. Anthony when I was attending USF. This was the time when their dinning hall was across the street and much, much smaller than the new one today. We were bused here from the campus to help out ease the traffic away from the regular volunteers. My job: I was their "hot chocolate boy." Hard to imagine how time flies and how St. Anthony have grown. It feels like it was only yesterday when I remember seeing hundreds of people line up by 4PM for their dinner serving. I've donated my time here for my years, I've brought in my employees for a charitable day, I've come by myself and also with just a friend. Really no pre-planning is needed; I've shown up on an early Sunday breakfast shift and been put to work. If you're bringing in a group--then yes! you need to arrange that with the staff. They have plenty of work and the need is there. I've stayed for worship on a Sunday and that's a worthy emotional experience. The whole program is humbling. The need that St. Anthony's fills in it's ministry highlights just how many people need this foundation. It's a great feeling to be able to give back to those in need. The first time I came here was because I was in the middle of an unwanted divorce and I was trying to re-focus my thoughts and self-pity on something else--WOW the gift I received and left with was so much more than the time and effort I put in. It's a great feeling to be able to give back a little love and support to those who so need a helping hand. Don't we all just need a smile and a warm "someone cares" touch? The best and super efficient place to volunteer. They serve to the most vulnerable and needy segment of San Francisco, the poor people of TL. There are various activities and options available to volunteer. They even have a 1 hr. Shift to serve lunch during the day, so that works out best if you work in SF downtown area. On an average, they server around 2000 meals during the lunch time. Signup is super easy and they leverage SalesForce volunteer portal that is very efficient and problem free to signup, checkin etc. other than serving the food, they provided groceries, clothing and shoes etc. to people in need . They have two buildings. In the other building they run a Technology Lab and a Medical Clinic. That has more volunteering opportunities. I usually drop off my items at GoodWill since my mom does that, but I decided to make my own decision. I decided to donate to my local neighbors that can find value and good use from my items. I hope the new owners are happy. Curbside drop off was so easy (it goes from 9am-2pm, after 2 from 2-4pm you can walk inside and look for assistance). Anthony Bourdain once said "Food is an event" So last night I came home, looked in my refrigerator and saw nothing that appealed to me. I then walk out my front door and head to Mollie Stone's, I pick up a salmon filet $18.50, make my way to the salad bar $6.00, and discover a jar of imported French tartare sauce $10.00. A few minutes later I am grilling my salmon and then begin the process of looking for a nice bottle of wine. And there it is! A nice bottle of Goldeneye pinot noir $60. A casual dinner at home, $94.50 spent on one person (aka me). I do not even give it a second thought. By the end of the night I toss out half a bottle of wine and throw out the rest of the $10.00 jar of imported French tartare. How about a wake up call. This is it. A place where I am no different than those in need. A place where the disabled and families eat first and others who are hungry have to wait and see if there is enough. A place where protein dishes are rarely served because of their expense is a premium. For most of us, food is an event. But for those who come here, food is for survival a vehicle to help make it though another day. read more

I started donating to St. Anthony's years ago - after the last time I tried to donate to the Goodwill and they rejected half of what I brought. I don't give away clothes that are torn or have problems. Mine are still perfectly 'new' looking items that I either haven't worn in a while or simply don't fit anymore. If I'm donating - then don't be picky and act like you're too good to take my stuff. I don't even ask for a receipt. A donation is a donation for me. Just have it. Goodwill's loss. I've been bringing all my stuff to St. Anthony's ever since - and I feel they really appreciate it. I feel it's a good program and they keep their focus on the people they're trying to help. That's how it should be. Goodwill charges for their clothes in their stores. St. Anthony gives it to the people who need it. I understand that every agency needs $$ to keep running, so I don't blame Goodwill for charging. But what about those who can't afford the $20 for a jacket in the winter. I have one to give, St. Anthony's will help me give it to someone who needs it. read more

This driveway belongs to The St. Anthony Foundation and avoids dealing with any parking issues. ******* I hadn't realized how difficult it would be to find an organization that would give my donation to those who need it opposed to selling it to them. I was Googling my head off until once again Yelp saved the day. I was glad to have found The St. Anthony Foundation. I started out parting with a couple of jackets that where a few years old but rarely used but once I got over that hurdle I realized that I had dress shirts, ties, sweaters and a pile of dead dot . com company t-shirts and fleeces that I have never worn. I washed and folded everything and headed over to the drop-off. The actual drop-off took less than a minute but I stuck around for a few more to talk to the volunteers. -If you are not getting a receipt be sure to hand your donations to a volunteer to make sure that it is properly distributed. Just dropped off a car full of clothes, shoes and a piece of luggage here. It was really easy and convenient to do so at the drop off, located at the corner of Mission and 8th Street. Just pulled into their lot and rang the bell and a volunteer came out with a rolling bin to cart away the items. Filled out a receipt and then we were gone. It all happened in less than 15 minutes. They also will pickup from your house if you've got too much stuff or items that are too big. I like that these items are more likely to help out the community directly than for it to be sold for an amount which is then divided out to pay for things before being allocated to a charity. Or a place that gets too, too picky about what's donated. None of what was dropped off was crap or junky. So yeah, it felt kind of good. read more

I am so glad my friend pushed me to volunteer at St. Anthony's today. I helped serve food, bus tables, fill up juice, etc. and had a blast doing it. The staff is particularly friendly and welcoming and the patrons are great. These are people no one (including me) pays attention to on the street, but helping them out really opened my eyes. They are so grateful and clearly starving for social contact. I can't tell you how invigorating it was helping someone other than myself for once. The whole operation is a well-oiled machine and extremely efficient, which makes it easier on everyone. I will definitely be back regularly! read more

Today was our first trial shift serving lunch at St. Anthony Dining Room (my 12-year-old son and me). We both left feeling blessed and happy to have had the opportunity to help those who came in for a meal. It was a little uncertain what to expect from the patrons as we know it might be a little dicey walking through the Tenderloin. But after today, we see that the patrons are just like us, only down on their luck and needing a little help with a meal and just getting by day to day. Hey, it could happen to anyone. It could definitely happen to my family judging from some recent happenings with our financial situation (no lie). After our shift, as I was talking to one of the staff members, I felt someone tap me on the shoulder. I thought it was the coordinator and turned around. It was a middle-aged woman, and she just wanted to say thank you. That was a really nice feeling that we were able to help someone who needed a hot meal. We were told that since it was early in the month, it would not be that busy. By that, they meant they would only serve 2200 people instead of 2500-2600! Can you believe those numbers? I could not. The people did not stop coming. It seemed constant and endless - the numbers of people that kept on entering the building. And even if someone came after the last call (1:35 p.m.), they were not turned away. The staff graciously let them in to receive a meal. The staff and the volunteers there were wonderful. Most everyone was very friendly and tried to get to know one another. There was such a vast age range - from 7th graders to college-aged kids to middle-aged to seniors! We met a long-time volunteer who had been volunteering for 17 years! She pointed out different folks in the dining room who had been helping 20 years and who lived as far as Modesto and Walnut Creek. Talk about commitment! We met others who were going through the rehab program (could be from drug or alcohol addiction), etc. and part of the program was working at St. Anthony for a certain number of months as a stepping stone towards getting back on their feet. All in all, we had a very positive experience. I highly recommend St. Anthony for a volunteer experience or if you are going through hard times and need to be fed. We will be back to volunteer once a month, and I am already looking forward to it! read more

I was looking for a place to donate clothes and had walked by St. Anthony's before and was debating between St. Anthony's and Goodwill. I went with St. Anthony's as they weren't going to sell the clothes I donate. Goodwill does great work but I wanted my donated clothes to go to people in the Tenderloin especially as the winter sets in. Donated a good amount of clothes and jackets. St Anthony's made it easy to donate as I could drive up and volunteers come out to take your clothes. Great job, St. Anthony's. Taking you for helping the needy. I was going to be in the area donating blankets to another organization and wanted to also donate food to another non profit organization. Did some research, and found out that St. Anthony was doing a curbside donation drive. They had a specific list of items they wanted to put in gift bags they were handing out to people attending their Xmas dinner...how cool! They made the process sooo easy! They had the section in front of their building blocked off so you could park and volunteers ready to unload your car. I have been bringing groups in to volunteer at St. Anthony's for the past ten years. They have always been very responsive and attentive to detail. The staff makes sure our groups are comfortable and feel safe during their day of volunteering. They don't just throw you into a volunteer situation right away. They have always organized an overview of the Tenderloin Neighborhood, a short walking tour, and then volunteering in the clothing distribution and the dining room. I am very impressed by St. Anthony's focus on 'dignity and respect,' which seems to be an attitude throughout the staff and volunteers, and thus clients feel good and this becomes a safe haven for those who need not only a good meal, but to be acknowledged by others in a respectful way. I recommend serving at St. Anthony's to learn a lot, gain perspective and to help others. read more

Today is a very humbling experience. Its Curbside Donation time. Happy to contribute even in a small way.... Its Thanksgiving time, these people need and deserve our help and support. I dropped off some turkeys, and 25 lbs of cole slaw and 25 lbs of potatoes. It was all loaded in my car from where I purchased, and St Anthony's is right there, curbside, anxious and happy to accept, plus exchange hugs. I could just cry to see the happiness in their eyes, who see you drive up, with donations. Its something I wish I could do every day. Nobody should go hungry. Thanksgiving or any day. read more

They work with local companies and good samaritans for their volunteer program and they do a great job organizing and sorting gently used items for those who really need it. I donated several hours sorting and merchandising items for families including underprivileged children and it felt incredibly good to assist. I had fun volunteering today at St. Anthony's. We helped give out groceries to low income folks. They had a very easy to learn and efficient distribution system and everyone today had positive energy. When I showed up today, everything was bagged and ready to go. Their facility looked really clean and organized and it looks like they are a well run organization. I would definitely come back to participate in more volunteer opportunities. I think this experience was worth getting up at six am on a weekend. I'm looking forward to volunteering at their soup kitchen in the near future. I went on a Sunday to donate clothes via the curbside drop-off. It is on 121 Golden Gate Avenue, so on the right side. You might have to double park and run out, but there were a couple of workers right there ready to take my items. They asked if I needed a receipt, which they can give right then and there, but I didn't need one, so I jumped out of the car and right back in. Very convenient, and I would much rather donate my clothes to this great cause than to the so-called "non-profit" Goodwill (especially after that scandal in San Jose in the late 90s where they stole millions that could have been donated). read more
