In my quest to explore the various cuisine scenes and things to do throughout Jersey City and specifically the Heights, I made my way to St. Nicholas Church to celebrate Easter https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=g4IoGb1nGivKfIv7dBh12A and the end to Lent (I always waited until Easter). At this point in my life, I was definitely a casual practicing Roman Catholic and made every possible attempt to recognize major religious observances whether it was at my own parish, on a cruise ship, or anywhere domestic and abroad. While I visited my friend or did work in this part of the country, I've walked by this church many times but never went inside. On this fateful day, the stars finally aligned, and Lord did I and our country needed some spiritual holiness in our respective lives. Would St. Nicholas Church be a suitable place of worship to resurrect my soul and realign my chakras!? EXPERIENCE As was usually the case whenever I visited a different parish other than my own, I had to get accustomed to some of their nuances (nothing major, I can attend all services at my parish on almost autopilot). The service lasted about one hour and was relatively standard. Being the relative newcomer/outsider, I noticed most if not everyone knew each other who was at the service which was very cool. I rarely experienced that at my own parish! I felt safe, welcomed, and left a slightly better person than when I entered - praise the Lord! PURCHASE Offertory ($10.00): As I always joked to myself, I added more to my good karma credit; bless you, Lord! SERVICE Aside from the actual Easter service itself and the ushers who collected money during the Offertory, there really wasn't much else (I appreciated that my parish also accepted electronic payments). There weren't any welcomers outside of the church, etc. Things appeared to run smoothly - amen! PARKING (FREE; N/A this instance) This was an easy flat 10-minute walk from my friend's place. Otherwise, they had a medium-sized private lot, and there appeared to be plenty of spots along the main drag of Central Ave. and all surrounding roads - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A medium-sized church https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=48&select=DuCcSzTgWm0B40Et5ifvGg with one main section filled with wooden pews and bibles, the altar was the focal point, and your usual assortment of Catholic decorations and effigies such as statues (e.g. The Virgin Mary, Jesus), the Stations Of The Cross, and definitely a more traditional feel comparable to my own parish. I really loved the ornate designs of the exterior similar to what you found in Europe. Minimal muted natural lighting came through the many stained-glass windows and doors while bright decorative hanging electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. From an aesthetics standpoint, I appreciated the traditional aspects of decor, prayer, etc. Again this was more of a personal thing and nothing else. As I continued to visit a very dear friend in the area and potentially found more work nearby, I found my church of record in the neighborhood (this was the most convenient parish). I found very good value based on the service and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $10.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, I paid cash for my Offertory because they didn't accept credit cards let alone mine of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Father Bruce is new to the parish and has been making a lot of improvements to the building. Father Alex and Jose are also great. Sunday mass is at 8:00 AM / 10:00 AM / 12:00 PM. There is also a good RCIA program at this church. The inside of the church is not very ornate, but it does have some beautiful stained glass windows. The outside of the building is simple and beautiful; the building definitely lends a certain air of distinction to the neighborhood.

It's in pristine condition and holds annual Italian feasts that have people fly in from all over every year who have previously lived in the area. It's an amazing landmark and very beautiful church. As we…read morestudy and proclaim the scriptures, we also look for ways to practice our faith and to seek the justice God proclaims today. We are multicultural and LGBTQ affirming. We love good music and on any given Sunday you may hear classical music, global hymns, gospel or jazz. Children play an active role in the church and we seek to welcome them through children's bulletins and bibles, a children's sermon, and sometimes having the kids lead music or read scripture lessons. Worship is at 10:30. We serve Communion once a month and offer anointing for healing and wholeness by the Deacons once each season. Baptism is available to all ages, with the expectation that you remain part of the community to grow in faith. Sunday School for children and adults is at 9:30 am. We have 3 age- appropriate classes for pre-k through middle schoolers, and an adult bible study as well. We have occasional youth group activities such as the confirmation lock-in and preparing a meal to serve at the Family Promise shelter. The church offers 8 weekly English Conversation Classes for the community, taught by volunteers. We support the Oelhaff House shelter for survivors of domestic violence, Center for Food Action, and CoFiA and First Friends, which are both groups that work for immigration justice. Jazz Jam meets the 2nd Friday each month, at 8 pm, where musicians of all ages and skills come to share their music and build community. You are welcome to check us out!

This former art gallery space is being utilized to showcase area artists on a rotating monthly basis, as well as a function hall for private events. They regularly host a community arts program called "Arts Beats" which encourages people to come out and paint and listen to live music. Their services are held every Sunday at 10am. I have not partook in their religious services, but have attended a number of their art shows over the last few months. The staff is very friendly, and happy to collaborate on arts programming. I love that they are bringing more art to the Powerhouse Arts District!

300th review. A…read moreBeautiful Old Church St. Anne's Church first opened up in 1904. The exterior is light grey brick and you can notice it's steeple from miles away. On the inside the pitched ceiling with the stained glass windows and a beautiful altar make an awe inspiring view. They also have an old fashioned pipe organ which is still in use today. The congregation has definitely changed over the years since I have been living in the area as has the neighborhood. Since 1997 the parish has held a festival every July. It is the third weekend in July and occurs during the Novena to St. Anne. All ethnicities of the parishioners are reflected in the festival from Italian ( you have to try Sister Alberta's zeppoles), Filipino dishes, Spanish and of course the good old American hotdog which you can chase down with ice cold beer. They also run a 50/50 and have some games of chance in Centennial Hall. Even though the school has closed this grand old church serves as a beacon to the neighborhood that I call home.

I have attended other ceremonies in different churches around Jersey City but none offer the sacraments the way St. Anne's does. No cellphones were allowed that night which made everyone really pay attention to what was being done/said. The lights were off and we only had our candles lit. It was stunning. I did all 3 in one ceremony by attending the Sunday classes before mass. The church has this lovely historical elegance to it. Even though the Parish staff has changed, they are all still kind. I don't attend church as much as I should but when I do go I prefer the Sunday mass at 10:30. They also offer a Spanish Mass, which is held on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m.

First off the Parish staff are amazing with what they do. Sister Ellen is very good with the children and gets them involved as much as possible, Ms. Dixon does an awesome job with handling the music ministry, even down to the lectors, ushers, etc, everybody else who contribute to a meaningful mass or any kind of celebration for that matter does a great job here. I've had the pleasure of listening to the words of Fr. Peter (May he rest in peace), Fr. Bob (He always had such good sense of humor!), Deacon Joe, Deacon Stephen and Fr. Tom who is simply amazing with sharing his faith and teachings. What I also appreciate about this parish is how giving they are to the people around them be it from the Parish itself or outside. The Parishioners are also involved and are very kind. If donations or any kind of help are needed, people from this parish jump in to help without second thoughts. You see smiling and familiar faces when you attend mass and it gives you a sense of belongingness not only in "body" but also in faith. Love that this Church embodies what it is supposed to, Love, Compassion, Honesty, Acceptance and so much more.
