So when I was driving through St Matthews this weekend and saw that 3/14 was the weekend for this festival, you bet your bottom dollar that the kid in me sprung to try this out! Parking was ample, and at first I approached the tent in the parking lot. This, however, was the place for bulk food: quart tubs of turtle soup and German-style potato salad (read: no mayonnaise and . . . if it's made right . . . bacon!) Instead, I just wanted a bowl of soup to warm my stomach and soul on a rainy Saturday. That type of sustenance could be found on the second floor. I ran up the stairs to the gymnasium. There was a virtual smorgasbord of comfort food, including the famous turtle soup, German-style potato salad, macaroni and cheese, Stan's Fish Sandwich sandwiches, and an array of desserts that appeared to be homemade. I was single-minded in my quest for the soup and didn't even bother with the optional side items. The verdict: not bad. It's a tomato-base soup with small pieces of meat (I'm assuming it's turtle, and albeit I am an adventurous eater, the thought of consuming the hare's wise, steady-on counterpart made me a little sad), along with pieces of tomato and potato (?). It's all a very smooth, soup-like consistency and has a surprisingly sweet taste, with notes of cinnamon. It's slightly reminiscent of Skyline chili. I doctored mine up with a little hot sauce; I like foods so spicy that my mucous membranes are crying for mercy. So, will I be back for a bowl of Turtle Soup again next year? You betcha!

I've never been to a Roman Catholic service. I had heard good things about it being beautiful, and worth going to. Which segues into my review... * The Roman Catholic Church is obviously one of those churches that you have to grow up in, or spend a lot of time in, to understand what is going on. And that's OK. Church is made for believers and the edification of the saints. So I understand the reasoning. But as an outsider, I had absolutely no idea when to stand and when to sit and when to kneel and when to respond and what to respond with and when to make a hand gesture and whatever else. I had absolutely no idea what was going on. * The church is big and beautiful and gorgeous. * The priest didn't use a microphone when he spoke. This made it incredibly difficult to understand him. They obviously depend on the reverb to reach the back of the church so everyone can hear. Well, they're successful. I could HEAR, but I just couldn't understand. The reverb was too much. Because I'm a Protestant, I will overlook the myriad of theological differences between the Protestant faith and the Roman Catholic faith in this review. I'll just leave it at the above - The church is gorgeous, but it's very hard for an outsider to understand what is happening. I'll therefore rate it right down the middle. 3*

The tables were set up in the gym and this was a great space, there was enough room for everyone. Ordering and receiving food was good, a few snafus as you would expect from a mostly volunteer group running the show, such as only giving part of our group drink tickets and none for the others when we all ordered the same thing. But its OK! as the order paper declared: "St Aloysius, where the fishes are delicious" haha Anyway I had a Fish sandwich on rye, excellently cooked, good, fresh bread. A rolled oyster which was mostly breading but it was tasty. Sides were mac and cheese and fries. I had originally ordered hush puppies and onion rings but they had just run out of both when it was my turn. A shame too because I did not care for the mac, it was very creamy but had almost no cheese flavor and the fries were just fries. But I love this time of year and this place is one of the best.

I've been to church's big and small and I must say, I prefer the smaller church of close knit people! Most big churches seem to be more focused on material things and operate like a business! Cathedral of the Assumption is a downtown Louisville Catholic Church that has a very historic…read moremeaning to the city. Home of the arch bishop and many priests and members of the Catholic Church organization. This beautiful classic style cathedral is massive and has an impressive campus. Walking in they have seat back chairs rang attach and make a semi circle around the stage and massive columns. The roof painted like the night sky of Bethlehem in the tale of Jesus birth is a nice elegant touch. I have visited this cathedral for a mass a handful a times from my nephews awards ceremonies and confirmations and recently to my own daughters confirmation. Overall a very lovely place to take in a mass and hold a special sacramental event such as confirmations or weddings. Being downtown you will have to street park or pay to garage park. I usually Park the adjoining 4th street live parking garage and it provides a close and easy place to park and get in and out.
