As a self-affirmed "church reviewer/seeker," I have visited a few different churches and have come away with something from each of them. St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, in the quaint town of Irvington, is a warmhearted congregation with much to offer the community. A glance at their website gives a prospective visitor an idea of their basic tenents: "Our parish contains "cradle" Episcopalians, as well as many people who come from religious traditions other than Episcopalian, including Roman Catholicism and non-Christian belief systems such as Judaism and Buddhism. Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we invite you to join us. You'll be welcome here!" If that doesn't say 'that they may all be one' loud and clear, then I don't know what does, my friend. The rector, Rev. Nora Smith, is personable and down-to-earth, much like other Episcopal priests I have encountered. Her sermons are thoughtful and those that I have heard touch upon topics relevant to modern life and individual struggles. There is much to take way from the sermons themselves, and they make for a thought-provoking experience. This congregation also appears to take its concern for the wider world quite seriously. Their Sunday prayers include remembrances for Shane and Josh, the two American hikers still imprisoned in Iran; the environment and our stewardship of it; missions to the less fortunate in the Third World; as well as the standard prayers for bishops, parish folk, and the sick. It's nice to attend services at a church that has such a regard for the world and its people. The congregants are extremely friendly and go out of their way to introduce themselves and make you feel at home. Coffee is served after Mass in the well-appointed parish hall, which is nice and homey. Music here is a treat for the ears - although the choir is currently on hiatus for the summer - and there is also a small chapel off to the side of the main sanctuary where one can sit in private contemplation. I could go on, but if you find yourself in Irvington I recommend that you experience this parish for yourself. You won't be disappointed; rather, you will be welcomed warmly. read more

I really like the ministry here. Powerful topics and interesting services every time I attend, many sermons are very relevant to current affairs in the society today. It's a very welcoming church to people of all backgrounds and engaging congregants. I love the fact that St. B is very involved in charity causes and supports outreach helping communities across Westchester County. I enjoy various activities/programs the church offers for adults, youths, children, & families throughout the year. You would feel right at home on your first visit to worship at St. Barnabas in Irvington. Highly recommended! read more

St. Barnabas, a charming stone church with gorgeous historic stained-glass windows, is a Rivertown gem. The space is an exceptionally beautiful place to worship, but it's the people who make St. B's a warm, welcoming, fun community. The church is active with ministries ranging from the annual clothing sale, which brings visitors from far and wide, to Midnight Run, to a thriving youth group. The sermons are deeply rooted in scripture and history, always uplifting, timely, and thought-provoking. I'm happy to call St. B's my spiritual home. I couldn't recommend it highly enough! read more
